To reduce the strength of tip vortex of the fixed wing, a horizontal wing-let splitted into two parts was utilized, and the interaction between vortices generated by these wing-lets was investigated by the hot-wire anemometry. The process of vortex forming and merging was clarified by measurements of velocity vectors and their contours at five downstream cross-sections; 0.05C(chord length), 0.2C, 0.5C, 1.0C and 2.0C. Both vortex-lets formed by each wing-lets rotate counterclockwise and merge into a larger single vortex within a short downstream distance, 0.5C in this case. The strength of the merged tip vortex turned out to become smaller than that of the plain wing tip near the vortex core.

The unique feature of pervaporation is the mass transfer from a liquid phase to a vapor phase through a non-porous polymeric membrane. When a liquid mixture is brought into contact with a membrane at one side, it is sorbed into the membrane. Due to a driving force applied across the membrane, the sotbed liquid molecules permeate through the membrane and evaporate at the downstream side of the membrane. In pervaporation the permeated species are usually removed from the downstream side under a relatively low vapor pressure, for example by evacuation with a vacuum pump. As far as this condition is fulfilled, the evaporation step can be considered to be much faster than sorption or diffusion. Hence evaporation does not contribute to permselectivity. Therefore the separation by pervaporation results from the differences in the preferential sorption of the individual components of a mixture into the membrane together with the diffusion rates through the membrane. This postulation implies that both sorption and diffusion phenomena have to be accounted for to understand the physico-chemical nature of the pervaporation separation process.

In this study, the electron behavior was investigated numerically in order to obtain guidelines for design and operation of a new plasma source by a magnetic neutral loop discharge (NLD). The optimum plasma production was investigated by using a 3-dimensional simulation model which enables the electron behavior calculation from source region to downstream region. The results showed that the high-density plasma produced around the magnetic neutral loop (NL) is transferred from the NL region to the downstream region along magnetic force lines. Also the avaraged electron energy is increased with the normalized RF electric field (F), which can be used to characterize the plasma production efficiency of NLD system. Considering the relation between F and plasma production, in-depth plasma control can be achieved at a given specific process condition.
Microalgae are attracting attention as a resource for the production of biofuels, food nutrients, biochemicals, and bioplastics. Among a wide range of sources of the biomass, microalgae have been highlighted due to relatively easy cultivation, ability to eliminate carbon dioxide, and low culturing cost. Despite the great potential of microalgal biomass as a biological material, the complexity and relatively expensive downstream processes have inhibited the commercial use of microalgae. In this study, we reviewed recent techniques for microalgal drying for the production of microalgal based products. As drying processes comprise the largest portion of microalgae processing cost, an efficient drying technique is key to the utilization of microalgal biomass.

Preconstruction process in a lean project delivery system was studied in one large healthcare project working for a general contractor. Researchers joined a new lean delivery project for approximately six weeks and participated in preconstruction process including design coordination, management coordination, and target costing while concurrently interviewing other project participants and employees, recording activity in meetings, and otherwise observing the process. The preconstruction process in lean project delivery system, called integrated project design, showed many benefits such as brining expertise of downstream players (i.e., mechanical and electrical contractors) into the design phase. However, lack of leadership and lack of design-integrator blocked the successful application of a new concept of design process.

A two-dimensional (2D), laterally-averaged hydrodynamic and water quality model, CE-QUAL-W2 was applied to evaluate the performance on simulating the effect of flushing from Daecheong Reservoir on the downstream water quality variations during the flushing events held on November, 2003 and March, 2008. The hydraulic and water quality simulation results were compared with field measurement data, as well as a one-dimensional (1D), unsteady model (KORIV1) that revealed limited capability in the previous study due to missing the resuspension process of river bottom sediments. The results showed that although the 2D model made satisfactory performance in reproducing the temporal variations of dissolved matters including phosphate, ammonia and nitrate, it revealed poor performance in simulating the increase of biological oxygen demand and suspended sediment (SS) concentrations during the passage of the flushing flow. The reason of the error was that the resuspension process of the 2D model is only the function of shear stress induced by wind. In reality, however, as shown by significant correlation between bottom shear stress ($\tau$) and observed SS concentration, the resuspension process can be significantly influenced by current velocity in the riverine system, especially during flushing event. The results indicate that the resuspension of river bottom materials should be incorporated into the water quality modeling processes if $\tau$ is greater than a critical shear stress (${\tau}_c$) for better simulation of flushing effect.

This study was conducted to investigate the nutrient distribution and controlling factors in small stream estuaries. The seasonal variations of nutrient concentration (nitrate, ammonium and phosphate) were observed from 2010 to 2012 in the three streams located in Dang-hang (closed estuary: Go-seong, open estuary: Gu-man and Ma-am). The nutrient concentrations in Go-seong were significantly higher than other estuaries, because Go-seong is relatively large and has large nutrient load from the watershed. The dyke located at the estuary, also, caused the high nutrient concentration by reducing the dilution and increasing residence time. In all three streams, nitrate concentration was high at upstream and decreased toward the downstream, because high load of nutrient input were located at upstream. Dilution and biogeochemical removal toward the downstream also caused the trends. Especially, denitrification, a typical nitrogen removing process showed clear tendency of gradual decreasing from upstream to downstream. However, Ammonium and phosphate concentrations were high at upstream and decreased toward the downstream only when the nutrient loads from the rivers were high. Nutrient concentrations were low in summer and high in winter. Freshwater discharge in summer caused a decrease of the residence time and increase of the transport of nutrients to downstream and reduced the nutrient concentrations in the estuary. Nutrient removal by the biological production during high temperature periods also affected the low nutrient concentrations. Small stream estuaries showed distinct nutrient dynamics. It is necessary to understand these characteristics in order to properly manage the small stream estuary.

In this work, we present the results of our empirical study on 802.11 wireless LAN network traffic. We collect the packet trace from existing campus wireless LAN infra-structure. We analyzed four different data sets: aggregate traffic, upstream traffic, downstream traffic, tcp only packet trace from aggregate traffic. We analyze the time series aspect of underlying traffic (byte count process and packet count process), marginal distribution of time series, and packet size distribution. We found that in all four data sets there exist long-range dependent property in byte count and packet count process. Inter-arrival distribution is well fitted with Pareto distribution. Upstream traffic, i.e. from the user to Internet, exhibits significant difference in its packet size distribution from the rests. Average packet size of upstream traffic is 151.7 byte while average packet size of the rest of the data sets are all greater than 260 bytes. Packets with full data payloads constitutes 3% and 10% in upstream traffic and the downstream traffic, respectively. Despite the significant difference in packet size distribution, all four data sets have similar Hurst values. The Hurst alone does not properly explain the stochastic characteristics of the underlying traffic. We model the underlying traffic using fractional-ARIMA (FARIMA) and fractional Gaussian Noise (FGN). While the fractional Gaussian Noise based method is computationally more efficient, FARIMA exhibits superior performance in accurately modeling the underlying traffic.

Flowmeters that measure the amount of fluid passing through conduits must kept accurate by comparison and the periodic calibration. The reference meters used are clamp-on meters that mount sensors on the outer wall of the pipe. They are called 1-path, 2-path or 4-path flowmeters depending on the number of sensors. We selected a flowmeter mainly used for K-water as test a flowmeter. We carried out experiments to find the intrinsic error of the flowmeter and errors in the downstream of a double bent pipe. The results show that there are the sensor locations that meet the tolerance. We suggested the angle of the sensor, the straight run from the downstream of the bent pipe and the number of sensors. So it is possible to improve the water treatment process and increase the accounted water rate by upgraded flow measurement technology.
