  • Three-dimensional finite element model for analysis of reinforced concrete members was developed in order to investigate the prediction of bending and shear failure of reinforced concrete beams. A failure surface of concrete in strain space was newly proposed in order to predict accurately the ductile response of concrete under multi-axial confining stresses. Cracking of concrete in triaxial state was incorporated with considering the tensile strain-softening behavior of cracked concrete as well as the cracked shear behavior on cracked surface of concrete caused by aggregate interlocking and, dowel action. By correlation study on failure types of bending and shear of beams, current finite element model was well simulated not only the type of ductile bending failure of under-reinforced beams but also the type of brittle shear failure of no-stirruped reinforced concrete beam.

  • In this study, push-out and static loading tests were conducted to evaluate the behavioral characteristics of composite beams with a perfobond rib shear connector. The shear capacity of the perfobond rib was found to be proportional to its concrete strength, which is in turn affected by the increase in the concrete end-bearing strength and concrete dowel action to resist the shear force. The relative slips of the push-out specimen, however, which was used to assess the ductility of the shear connector, increased to some extent, but it no longer increased when it reached the critical concrete strength because of the flexibility of the transverse rebar in the rib hole. The static-loading-test results revealed a crack on the concrete slab in the composite beam with a perfobond rib on the side of the rib hole and transverse rebar for the applied moment and shear force to the rib hole, depending on the static loading. The shear resistance characteristics of the perfobond rib shear connector were found to resist the shear force from the relative slip on the interface of the composite beam. Thus, the sectional effect of the shear connector to the composite beam with a perfobond rib should be considered when designing the composite beam because the behavior of the composite beam can change owing to the shear connector.

  • In the shear failure mechanism of a beam, beam and arch actions always exist simultaneously. According to the shear span to depth ratio, the proportion between these two actions is varied and the contribution of these actions to shear capacity is changed. Moreover, the current codes provide recommendations based on experimental results of normal strength concrete, so the application range of concrete strength must be extended. Based on this mechanism and new requirement, a simplified analytical equation for shear capacity prediction of reinforced high strength concrete beams without stirrups is proposed. To reflect the change in the contribution between these actions, stress variation in the longitudinal reinforcement along the span is considered by use of the Jenq and Shah Model. Dowel action with horizontal splitting failure and shear friction between cracks are also taken into account. ize effect is included to derive a more precise equation. Regression analysis is performed to determine each variable and simplify the equation. And, the formula derived from theoretical approaches is evaluated by comparison with numerous experimental data, which are in broad range of concrete strength(especially in high strength concrete), shear span to depth ratio, geometrical size and longitudinal steel ratio. It is shown that the proposed equation is more accurate and simpler than other empirical equations, so a wide range of a/d can be considered in one equation.
