Performance Assessment of Turbulence Models for the Prediction of Tip Leakage Flow in an Axial-Flow Turbomachinery (축류형 유체기계에서 익단 누설 유동 해석을 위한 난류 모델 성능 평가)

  • It is experimentally well-known that high anisotropies of the turbulent flow field are dominant inside the tip leakage vortex, which is attributable to a substantial proportion of the total loss and constitutes one of the dominant mechanisms of the noise generation. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence models based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from the steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM) are compared with experimental data for two test cases: a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan. Through this comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the RSM, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without introducing any modeling, should be used to predict quantitatively the complex tip leakage flow, especially in the rotating environment.

A Study on the Electrical Properties of $Ta_2O_{5}$ Thin Films by Atomic Layer Deposition Method in MOS Structure (MOS구조에서의 원자층 증착 방법에 의한 $Ta_2O_{5}$ 박막의 전기적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • ln this work, we studied electrical characteristics and leakage current mechanism of $Ta_2O_{5}$ MOS(Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) devices. $Ta_2O_{5}$ thin film (63 nm) was deposited by ALD(Atomic Layer Deposition) method at temperature of 235 $^{\circ}C$. The structures of the $Ta_2O_{5}$ thin films were examined by XRD(X-Ray Diffraction). From XRD, it is found that the structure of $Ta_2O_{5}$ is single phase and orthorhombic. From capacitance-voltage (C-V) anaysis, the dielectric constant was 19.4. The temperature dependence of current density-electric field (J-E) characteristics of $Ta_2O_{5}$ thin film was studied at temperature range of 300 - 423 K. In ohmic region (<0.5 MV/cm), the resistivity was 2.456${\times}10^{14}$ ($\omega{\cdot}cm$ at 348 K. The Schottky emission is dominant at lower temperature range from 300 to 323 K and Poole-Frenkel emission is dominant at higher temperature range from 348 to 423 K.

Genomic Relationship of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium DT104 Isolates from Korea and the United States

  • Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 (Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 or DT104) has been emerging as a common pathogen for human in Korea since 1997. In order to compare the genomic relationship and to search for the dominant strains in Korea, we conducted pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and IS200 fingerprinting of 25 epidemiological unrelated isolates from human and animals from Korea and cattle from America. Two Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 isolates from human in Korea and all 8 isolates from American cattle had indistinguishable patterns from the PFGE and IS200 fingerprinting but multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium isolates, including DT104, from Korean animals had diverse genetic patterns. The data suggest that a dominant DT104 strain might have circulated between Korean and American cattle and that it had a high level of clonality.

The Characterization of Fish Communities in Agricultural Reservoirs (농업용 저수지의 어류군집 특성)

  • Most South Korean lakes are middle/small size artificial reservoirs, which are almost agricultural reservoirs (17,956). A total of 67 species (21 families) were recorded and collected from 65 agricultural reservoirs though field samplings and literature surveys. Dominant species was Pseudorasbora parva (relative abundance 24.5%), and Carassius auratur (41 sites) was the highest frequency. Feeding group of fish communities in the reservoirs was as follows: carnivorous (16.2%), omnivorous (79.5%) and herbivorous fish (4.3%). The number of individuals (P=0.024), species number (P=0.047) and carnivores number (P=0.024) were significantly correlated with reservoir ages. Reservoirs were classified into 3 groups according to feeding patterns of carnivore, omnivore and herbivore groups. The omnivores were dominant group in agricultural reservoirs. Detailed studies on fish community will be a base for the understanding of food web structure and biomanipulation in reservoir systems.

Herpetofauna and habitat characteristics of 16 lagoons along the eastern coastline of South Korea

  • We conducted field surveys of amphibians and reptiles over a two-year period in 16 lagoons along the eastern coastline of South Korea, and determined the habitat characteristics correlated with the number of amphibian and reptilian species and individuals. We documented 11 amphibian species and 8 reptilian species. The dominant amphibian species was the black-spotted pond frog (Rana nigromaculata), and the dominant reptilian species was the red-eared turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans), an invasive species. Among the 14 habitat characteristics, connectivity to mountainous area significantly affected the number of amphibian and reptilian individuals. Other factors, including emerged plant cover, salinity, pH, the number of birds for amphibians and connectivity to agricultural land, lagoon perimeter length for reptiles also influenced the number of species or individuals of them. Our results demonstrate that these lagoons are home to more amphibians and reptiles than has been previously known. To effectively conserve herpetofauna in the lagoon ecosystem, lagoons as well as surrounding wetlands, grasslands, and mountainous areas should be protected.

Combustion Noise Characteristics in Gas and Liquid Flames (가스 및 분무화염의 연소소음 특성에 관한 실험연구)

  • Combustion noise involved with chemical heat release and turbulent process in turbopropulsion systems, gasturbine, industrial furnaces and internal engines is indeed noisy. The experimental study reported in this paper is made to identify a dominant combustion noise in jet flames. Gaseous propane and kerosene fuel have been used with air as the oxidizer in a different jet combustion systems. Combustion and aerodynamic noise are studied through far field sound pressure measurements in an anechoic chamber. And also mean temperature and velocities and turbulent intensities of both isothermal and reacting flow fields were measured. It is shown that axial mean velocity of reacting flow fields is higher about 1 to 3m/sec than that of cold flow in a gaseous combustor. As the gaseous fuel flow rate increases, the acoustic power increases. But the sound pressure level for the spray flame decreases with increasing equivalence ratio. The influence of temperature in the combustion fields due to chemical heat release has been observed to be a dominant noise source in the spray flame. The spectra of combustion noise in gaseous propane and kerosene jet flame show a predominantly low frequency and a broadband nature as compared with the noise characteristics in an isothermal air jet.

Efficient Image Search using Advanced SURF and DCD on Mobile Platform (모바일 플랫폼에서 개선된 SURF와 DCD를 이용한 효율적인 영상 검색)

  • Since the amount of digital image continues to grow in usage, users feel increased difficulty in finding specific images from the image collection. This paper proposes a novel image searching scheme that extracts the image feature using combination of Advanced SURF (Speed-Up Robust Feature) and DCD (Dominant Color Descriptor). The key point of this research is to provide a new feature extraction algorithm to improve the existing SURF method with removal of unnecessary feature in image retrieval, which can be adaptable to mobile system and efficiently run on the mobile environments. To evaluate the proposed scheme, we assessed the performance of simulation in term of average precision and F-score on two databases, commonly used in the field of image retrieval. The experimental results revealed that the proposed algorithm exhibited a significant improvement of over 14.4% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to OpenSURF. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed approach achieves high accuracy and stability by using ASURF and DCD in searching for natural image on mobile platform.

Synthesis of nano-crystalline Si films on polymer and glass by ICP-assisted RF magnetron sputtering

  • Nano-crystalline Si thin films were deposited on polymer and glass by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) - assisted RF magnetron sputtering at low temperature in an argon and hydrogen atmosphere. Internal ICP coil was installed to increase hydrogen atoms dissociated by the induced magnetic field near the inlet of the working gases. The microstructure of deposited films was investigated with XRD, Raman spectroscopy and TEM. The crystalline volume fraction of the deposited films on polymer was about 70% at magnetron RF power of 600W and ICP RF power of 500W. Crystalline volume fraction was decreased slightly with increasing magnetron RF power due to thermal damage by ion bombardment. The diffraction peak consists of two peaks at $28.18^{\circ}$ and $47.10^{\circ}\;2{\theta}$ at magnetron RF power of 600W and ICP RF power of 500W, which correspond to the (111), (220) planes of crystalline Si, respectively. As magnetron power increase, (220) peak disappeared and a dominant diffraction plane was (111). In case of deposited films on glass, the diffraction peak consists of three peaks, which correspond to the (111), (220) and (311). As the substrate temperature increase, dominant diffraction plane was (220) and the thickness of incubation (amorphous) layer was decreased.

The Abundance and Damaging Period of the 'Dark grey cutworm' (Agrotis tokionis B.) (숯검은밤나방유충의 발생과 가해기에 관한 연구)

  • This work was carried out to study field biology of Agrotis tekienis B. in Korea for two years (1979 and 1980), The species was found to be the dominant species among cutworms giving damage to young Plants in Spring with making up approximately $80\%$ or more of cutworms collected at Suweon and Jeonju from March to early June. During April and May which is the most critical period as far as plant damage by cutworms is concerned, those of A. tokionis larvae collected were at 5th and 6th instar. A. tokionis larvae enter a summer diapause from late May to early July and Agrotis ipsilon became the dominant species. It is also suggested that A. tokionis larvae be called as the 'dark grey cutworm', based upon its larval body color.

Community Structure of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Upo Wetland, Korea

  • Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are one of the most widespread symbionts globally. Owing to their enhanced nutrient absorption capacity, AMF significantly contribute to the survival of individual plants and the ecosystem functioning. Community structures of AMF are affected by many environmental factors Inland wetlands have a different environment from common forest soils, therefore, plants inhabiting wetlands may have characteristic AMF communities. The purpose of this study was to compare the AMF communities in wetlands, among the species of host plants. We sampled the roots of 3 host plant species, Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, and Trisetum bifidum with rhizospheres from 3 isolated areas in Upo wetland, Korea. We extracted DNA from AMF spores in rhizospheres and the roots of 3 plant species. We amplified 18S rDNA of AMF using AMF specific primer. As a result, we confirmed 9 species from 5 genera in AMF spores, and 5 species from 3 genera in plant roots. Funneliformis caledonium was the most dominant species in field soils, on the other hand, Diversispora aurantia was the most dominant species in plant roots. We confirmed that species diversity and abundance of AMF communities were different among host plant species. These results showed that the AMF community had specific to host plants in the inland wetland.
