  • This study investigated microbial communities and their diversity in a full-scale mesophilic anaerobic digester treating sewage sludge. Influent sewage sludge and anaerobic digester samples collected from a wastewater treatment plant in Busan were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing. It was found that the microbial community structure and diversity in the anaerobic digester could be affected by inoculation effect with influent sewage sludge. Nevertheless, distinct microbial communities were identified as the dominant microbial communities in the anaerobic digester. Twelve genera were identified as abundant bacterial communities, which included several groups of syntrophic bacteria communities, such as Candidatus Cloacimonas, Cloacimonadaceae W5, Smithella, which are (potential) syntrophic-propionate-oxidizing bacteria and Mesotoga and Thermovigra, which are (potential) syntrophic-acetate-oxidizing bacteria. Lentimicrobium, the most abundant genus in the anaerobic digester, may contribute to the decomposition of carbohydrates and the production of volatile fatty acids during the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Of the methanogens identified, Methanollinea, Candidatus Methanofastidiosum, Methanospirillum, and Methanoculleus were the dominant hydrogenotrophic methanogens, and Methanosaeta was the dominant aceticlastic methanogens. The findings may be used as a reference for developing microbial indicators to evaluate the process stability and process efficiency of the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge.

  • Springback after drawing and trimming is regarded as one of the most influential factors during forming structural frames since the part dimensions have dominant effect on assembly quality at later stages. In this study, analytical results were obtained from a commercial FEM package for an outer rear frame of an automobile. In terms of springback and twist the effect of forming process is compared and discussed between open and closed-ends forming

  • The Steel Industry has made a significant contribution to the increase of energy use in Korea. This paper presents a method for development energy efficiency indicator in the steel industry based on the decomposing approach. This paper develops a logically consistent method for decomposing a change in energy consumption into the effects of three factors structural change, energy intensity and output level. Numerical illustration of the method is given using 1992~2001 data for energy consumption in a virtual works. The most dominant factor is revealed to be the output effect. The energy intensity for the steel industry has increased and the effect of such a growth was relatively strongly reflected in the decomposition analysis. The structural effect turned out to be also important during the periods.

  • This paper presents the results of numerical modeling studies on the effect of displacements of tunneling in granular soils. Presence of building loads is considered, to find displacement generated at the surface on tunnel. Effect of varying eccentricities of building is simulated, to find influence of building on vertical and horizontal displacement. Studies were carried out in two cases of with and without a geosynthetic layer installed at the bottom of the footing. Results of analysis revealed, the presence of geosynthetic layer under footing, with building placed on centre line, reduced the surface displacements compared to displacement generated without geosynthetic layer. Presence of geosynthetic layer under footing had a dominant effect in reducing displacements in high storey structures. However, when the building was shifted to greater eccentricities from centre line, presence of geosynthetic layer, led to insignificant reduction of displacements on the centre line at the surface.

  • In this study, we report an investigation for the charging and collection of aerosol nanoparticles in an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) according to particle charging and diffusion effects. The competition between charging probability and diffusion effect determines the collection efficiency of nanoparticles in the ESP. In conclusion, collection efficiency continuously decreased with the reduction in the particle size. This indicates that poor partial charging effect of nanoparticles is more dominant than their diffusion effect in the ESP for the nanoparticles in the particle size range of 4-20 nm. Theoretical calculations using a unipolar diffusion charing theory were in good agreement with the experimental data for the nanoparticles less than 20 nm in diameter.

  • For Lift-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), it is difficult to evaluate the performance through the scale-model wind tunnel tests, because of the scale effect relating to Reynolds number. However, it is beneficial to figure out the critical value of Reynolds number or minimum size of the Lift-type VAWT, when designing this type of micro wind turbine. Therefore, in this study, the performance of several scale-models of Lift-type VAWT (Reynolds number : $1.5{\times}10^4$ to $4.6{\times}10^4$) was investigated. As a result, the Reynolds number effect depends on the blade chord rather than the inlet velocity. In addition, there was a transition point of the Reynolds number to change the dominant driving force from Drag to Lift.

  • The wind-induced mean, background and resonant responses of Beijing National Stadium are investigated in this paper. Based on the concepts of potential and kinetic energies, the mode participation factors for the background and the resonant components are presented and the dominant modes are identified. The coupling effect between different modes of the resonant response and the coupling effect between the background and resonant responses are analyzed. The coupling effects between the background and resonant components and between different modes are found all negligible. The mean response is approximately analogous to the peak responses induced by the fluctuating wind. The background responses are significant in the fluctuating responses and it is much larger than the resonant responses at the measurement locations.

  • A propellant mainly consisting of nitric ester including nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine is characteristic of being decomposed naturally. And this phenomenon is known as being affected mostly by its storing temperature and humidity. In this research, the effect of storing temperature and humidity on self life has been studied by measuring the contained quantity of residual stabilizer of propellant KM30Al, which are parts of 155MM propelling charge K676 and K677; the method for the measurement is acceleration aging test, and decomposition reaction equation, Eyring Equation and Berthlot Equation were used for the calculation. As result of this study, it was found that the storing temperature influenced seven times as large as the storing humidity upon the self life of the propellant KM30Al, Furthermore, especially in the high temperature region, the storing temperature had a dominant effect on the self life.

  • In this study, operational vibration experiment and analysis have been conducted for the 4-blade small vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) including the effect of tower elastic behavior. Computational structural dynamics analysis method is applied to obtain Campbell diagram for the VAWT with elastic tower. An open type wind-tunnel is used to change and keep the wind velocity during the ground test. Equivalent reduced elastic tower is supported to the VAWT so that the elastic stiffness effect of the tower can be reflected to the present vibration experiment. Various excitation sources with aerodynamic forces are considered and the dominant operating vibration phenomena are physically investigated in detail.

  • Response of the rail surface is an important factor for the train safety and comfortable travel, and evaluation of vibration at the area along a rail is an important factor for the vibration. The dominant method to reduce the vibration that reach the ground is installing vibration absorber between rall and the under structure. In this paper, we evaluated the vibration reducing effect of using vibration control sleeper pads to slave and earth at certain distance from the sleepers.
