A study on the ramp tracking controller for the Distributed Control System with Network-induced Time Delays (네트웍의 시간 지연이 존재하는 분산제어시스템의 램프추종 제어기 설계에 관한 연구)

  • In the distributed control systems where the control components, controllers and sensors are distributed on a communications network, there exist network time delays on communication lines between the system components. This paper deals with the ramp tracking controller design issue for such systems. Time delay terms are converted into the rational terms using Pade approximation method and the system is augmented with two integrators for ramp tracking. For this system, ${\mu}$-controller design method, which enables to meet not only performance requirements but robust stabilities simultaneously, is employed.

  • As many sensors and actuators are used in various automated systems, the application of network to real-time distributed control system is gaining acceptance in many industries. In order to take advantages of networking, however, the network should be carefully designed to satisfy real-time distributed control. This paper presents an implementation method of closed-loop control using Profibus-FMS. In order to implement a closed-loop control system, we used industrial computers with Profibus-FMS network cards and a DC servo motor. Through various experiments, the step response of the control system with network was compared with the reference response without network.

Distributed optical fiber sensors for integrated monitoring of railway infrastructures

  • We describe the application of a distributed optical fiber sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering, as an integrated system for safety monitoring of railway infrastructures. The strain distribution was measured statically and dynamically along 60 meters of rail track, as well as along a 3-m stone arch bridge. We show that, gluing an optical fiber along the rail track, traffic monitoring can be performed in order to identify the train passage over the instrumented sector and determine its running conditions. Furthermore, dynamic and static strain measurements on a rail bridge are reported, aimed to detect potential structural defects. The results indicate that distributed sensing technology represents a valuable tool in railway traffic and safety monitoring.

  • The V-grooved single-mode fiber in which a surface part of the core was removed was investigated as a quasi-distributed water detection sensor. In the normal state, the V-grooved region is filled and covered with a specific RI (Refractive Index)-matched medium, and the sensor experiences minimal optical loss. As water invades the V-grooved region, the material is dissolved and removed, and a considerable optical loss occurs owing to the large RI difference between the fiber core and water. The experimental results showed the feasibility of the device as a sensor element of the quasi-distributed water detection sensor system based on general optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR).

  • According to the United States FMVSS 208, every passenger car on the market after September of 2006 must install a safety system, which can deploy the airbag with different intensity or suppression based on the passenger type, to reduce infant and child injuries from airbag deployments. The Weight Classification System, which has been developed by Hyundai Autonet, is a system that classifies the person occupying the passenger seat. To overcome sensing problems due to the weight sensors small voltage, the Distributed Systems Interface is adopted.

  • In this paper, optimum design of distributed detection is considered for a parallel sensor network system consisting of a fusion center and multiple passive sonar nodes. Nonrandom fusion rules are employed as the fusion rules of the sensor network. For the nonrandom fusion rules, it is shown that a threshold rule of each sensor node has uniformly most powerful properties. Optimum threshold for each sensor is investigated that maximizes the probability of detection under a constraint on energy consumption due to false alarms. It is also investigated through numerical experiments how signal strength, false alarm probability, and the distance between three sensor nodes affect the system detection performances.

  • This paper presents a feedback controller for compensation time delay in the distributed control systems. In using network, controllers and sensors are distributed on a communications network, there exist time delays on communication lines between the system components. So, we deal with the controller using Smith predictor controller design issue for such systems. Particularly compensated for the time delay of the plant or controller involved integrator using Modified Smith predictor. Simulation and the results show the good performance for the modified Smith predictor control systems.

  • Due to the introduction of the electronic control systems, agricultural machine is getting complicated with its special function. The complex electronics system increases difficulty of maintenances in the wiring harness system. The heavy wiring harness has some poor reliability and workability in the production line of manufacture also. So, in this study, some small local control modules are developed to complement the difficulties with the benefits of distributed control system. All of the local control modules are connected by using CAN communication. This system developed this study has the advantages of modification or alteration of wiring and local modules. All the sensors and actuators can be easily monitored and controlled by the main controller with the appropriate communication protocol made by in this study.

Implementation of Distributed Health-aware Bicycle System for Making Real-time Air-pollution Map (실시간 대기오염 지도 작성을 위한 분산형 건강인지 자전거 시스템 구현)

  • This paper presents an environmental navigation system which provides a guidance to the users of smart bicycle for a pollution-free route during their travel. The smart bicycle operates as a sensor node being composed of a distributed wireless sensor network over the whole urban area. Several environmental sensors measuring the amount of dust, CO, $CO_2$, $NO_2$ in the air are built into the smart bicycle to estimate the level of air pollution in the located area. Each smart bicycle sends/receives the measured sensor data and the city pollution map to/from the centralized server, which leads the bike-riders to a healthy route by providing the environmental navigation information. The proposed idea and its implementation give a useful insight on various application services with the distributed smart bicycles.

A new piezoelectric shell element and its application in static shape control

  • In this paper, a new three-dimensional piezoelectric thin shell element containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is proposed. The distributed piezoelectric sensor layer monitors the structural shape deformation due to the direct effect and the distributed actuator layer suppresses the deflection via the converse piezoelectric effect. A finite element formulation is presented for static response of laminated shell with piezoelectric sensors/actuators. An eight-node and forty-DOF shell element is built. The performance of the shell elements is improved by reduced integration technique. The static shape control of structure is derived. The shell element is verified by calculating piezoelectric polymeric PVDF bimorph beam. The results agreed with those obtained by theoretical analysis, Tzou and Tseng (1990) and Hwang and Park (1993) fairly well. At last, the static shape control of a paraboloidal antenna is presented.
