  • The use of high-gain-voltage step-up converters for distributed power generation systems is being popularized because of the need for new energy generation and power conversion technologies. In this study, a new constructed high-gain-boost DC-DC converter was proposed to coordinate low voltage output DC sources, such as PV or fuel cell systems, with high DC bus (380 V) lines. Compared with traditional boost DC-DC converters, the proposed converter can create higher gain and has wider input voltage range and lower voltage stress for power semiconductors and passive elements. Moreover, the proposed topology produces multilevel DC voltage output, which is the main advantage of the proposed topology. Steady-state analysis in continuous conduction mode of the proposed converter is discussed in detail. The practicability of the proposed DC-DC converter is presented by experimental results with a 300 W prototype converter.

  • A single-stage AC-AC converter has been designed for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) that eliminates multistage operation and DC-link filter elements, thus resolving size, weight, and reliability issues. A simple switching strategy is used to control the switches that changes the variable-frequency AC output of an electrical generator to a constant-frequency supply to feed into a distributed electrical load/grid. In addition, a modified random sinusoidal pulse width modulation (RSPWM) technique has been developed for the designed converter to make the overall system more efficient by increasing generating power capacity and reducing the effects of inter-harmonics and sub-harmonics generated in the WECS. The technique uses carrier and reference waves of variable switching frequency to calculate the firing angles of the switches of the converter so that the three-phase output voltage of the converter is very close to a sine wave with reduced THD. A comparison of the performance of the proposed RSPWM technique with the conventional SPWM demonstrated that the power generated by a turbine in the proposed approximately increased by 5% to 10% and THD reduces by 40% both in voltage and current with respect to conventional SPWM.

  • The market for distributed power generation based on renewable energy is increasing, particularly for standalone mini-grid applications in developing countries with limited energy resources. Stand-alone power systems (SAPS) are of special interest combined with renewable energy design in areas not connected to the electric grid. Traditionally, such systems have been powered by diesel engine generator sets (DEGS), but also hybrid systems with photovoltaic and/or wind energy conversion systems (WECS) are becoming quite common nowadays. Hybrid energy systems can now be used to generate energy consumed in remote areas and stand-alone microgrids. This paper describes the design, simulation and feasibility study of a hybrid energy system for a stand-alone power system. A simulated model is developed to investigate the design and performance of stand-alone hydrogen renewable energy systems. The analysis presented here is based on transient system simulation program (TRNSYS) with realistic ventilation load of a large store. Design of a hybrid energy system is site specific and depends on the resources available and the load demand.

  • This study proposes a finite-state model predictive controller to regulate the load current and balance the DC-link capacitor voltages of a four-leg neutral-point-clamped converter. The discrete-time model of the converter, DC-link, inductive filter, and load is used to predict the future behavior of the load currents and the DC-link capacitor voltages for all possible switching states. The switching state that minimizes the cost function is selected and directly applied to the converter. The cost function is defined to minimize the error between the predicted load currents and their references, as well as to balance the DC-link capacitor voltages. Moreover, the current regulation performance is improved by using a two-step prediction horizon. The feasibility of the proposed predictive control scheme for different references and loads is verified through real-time implementation on the basis of dSPACEDS1103.

  • Global warming and air pollution have increased the amount $CO_2$ in the atmosphere. In order to decrease the amount of $CO_2$, lots of researches are conducted toward using Hydrogen energy. Because of its high efficiency energy level and environmental friendly features, many companies have researched on developing hydrogen engine system and distributed generation system. Especially, the focus of this research provides the operation method of linear generator for hydrogen fuel combustion linear engine. During an ignition, linear generator is operated by motor to create the initial condition of engine combustion. Once the engine combustion is stabilized, the generator supplies electric power to grid. In order to stabilize the engine, linear generator is required to control mover frequency, direction, and force; Hence the PCS(Power Conversion System) place three H-bridge type inverter stacks in parallel to control phase current independently. As well, by using Back-to-Back method, it can receive electric power from both end.

  • With the increasing demand for renewable energy, distributed power included in fuel cells have been studied and developed as a future energy source. For this system, a power conversion circuit is necessary to interface the generated power to the utility. In many cases, a high step-up dc/dc converter is needed to boost low input voltage to high voltage output. Conventional methods using cascade dc/dc converters cause extra complexity and higher cost. The conventional topologies to get high output voltage use flyback dc/dc converters. They have the leakage components that cause stress and loss of energy that results in low efficiency. This paper presents a high boost converter with a voltage multiplier and a coupled inductor. The secondary voltage of the coupled inductor is rectified using a voltage multiplier and series-connected with the boost voltage of primary voltage of the coupled inductor. Therefore, high boost voltage is obtained with low duty cycle. Theoretical analysis and experimental results verify the proposed solutions using a 300W prototype.

  • Battery energy storage system(BESS) attract the attention of the power system operators with its fast response to a disturbance in spite of its limited energy capacity. This paper proposes the operating method of BESS for following the Automatic Generation Control(AGC) frequency control which is centrally distributed by a system operator. As BESS needs to just meet the control requirement from the system operator, it should be able to properly manage the state of charge(SOC) of BESS to be available to control signal. For doing these, the proposed method distributes the control requirement to available batteries in proportion to its SOC. In addition, unavailable batteries are controlled to recover the SOC to an appropriate range, and the recovering power is supplied by available batteries meeting the control requirement. Moreover, the proposed method manages the efficiency of power conversion system (PCS) by limiting the number of PCS to be assigned for the low control requirement. Finally, the case studies are carried out to verify the effectiveness of proposed strategy.

  • Recently, due to the excessive use of fossil fuels, many studies about the fossil fuels such as solar and fuel cell energy source are progressing. Fuel cell system has high energy conversion efficiency. Also, fuel cell system is environmentally friendly system because the carbon emission is almost not occur. Therefore, the fuel cell system is considered as the core technology of in the fields of the future energy and environmental. Fuel cell system has an effect on distribution power system because another power source of other than large power plants. So, fuel cell system can be reason of power quality in the power system. In this paper, we constructed the system for an assessment on Islanding. The system is composed with power source, Impedance coordination load and linear load, fuel cell system. we are performed assessment on voltage and power quality in customer and the distributed power system during the Islanding of residential fuel cell system. In addition, no change in the impedance of power system, we made a islanding condition only using the actual load, As a variation of generation and load current under islanding, an analysis results based on assessment system showed that the power qualities of distribution system became more aggravation as effect of voltage sag and voltage swell phenomena.

  • When surges and electromagnetic pulses from lightning or power conversion devices are considered, it is desirable to evaluate grounding system performance as grounding impedance. In the case of large-sized grounding electrodes or long counterpoises, the grounding impedance is increased with increasing the frequency of injected current. The grounding impedance is increased by the inductance of grounding electrodes. This paper presents the measured results of frequency-dependent grounding impedance and impedance phase as a function of the length of counterpoises. In order to analyze the frequency-dependent grounding impedance of the counterpoises, the frequency-dependent current dissipation rates were measured and simulated by the distributed parameter circuit model reflecting the frequency-dependent relative resistivity and permittivity of soil. As a result, the ground current dissipation rate is proportional to the soil resistivity near the counterpoises in a low frequency. On the other hand, the ground current dissipation near the injection point is increased as the frequency of injected current increases. Since the high frequency ground current cannot reach the far end of long counterpoise, the grounding impedance of long counterpoise approaches that of the short one in the high frequency. The results obtained from this work could be applied in design of grounding systems.
