Passive cavitation imaging method is used to observe the ultrasonic waves generated when a group of bubbles collapses. A problem with passive cavitation imaging is a low resolution and large side lobe levels. Since ultrasound signals generated by passive cavitation take the form of a pulse, the amplitude distribution of signals received across the receive channels varies depending on the direction of incidence. Both the centroid and flatness were calculated to determine weights at imaging points in order to discriminate between the main and side lobe signals from the signal amplitude distribution of the received channel data and to reduce the side lobe levels. The centroid quantifies how the channel data are distributed across the receive channel, and the flatness measures the variance of the channel data. We applied the centroid weight and the flatness to the passive cavitation image constructed using the delay-and-sum focusing and minimum variance beamforming methods to improve the image quality. Using computer simulation and experiment, we show that the application of weighting in delay-and-sum and minimum variance beamforming reduces side lobe levels.

In typical cellular systems using frequency reuse scheme, the terminal suffers a performance degradation due to the intercell interference signals from adjacent cells as the terminal moves toward the cell boundary. In this paper, a signal transmission and reception scheme which achieve spatial multiplexing and beamforming gain from a distributed MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) channel using multiple-antenna terminal is proposed for the spectral efficiency enhancement in a multi-cell downlink environment, when geographically separated base stations cooperatively transmit signals. In particular, we analyze the effective signal-to-interference ratio and spectral efficiency of the proposed scheme for different frequency reuse patterns and for varying numbers of receive antennas, and compare with the performance of the MRC (maximal ratio combining) reception scheme in typical cellular systems. We evaluate the amount of transmission efficiency of the scheme by comparing the performance near the cell boundary where the strong intercell interference is experienced.
In this paper, we propose shading functions to the appropriate focused beamforming for near-field target estimation. This near field shading functions are based on Chebychev and Manning windows. In order to obtain the optimum sensor weighting values with the help of the proposed shading technique, we assume that the sensor positions associated to the non-uniformly distributed array are precisely known. We calculate a series of sensor weighting values from the FFT operation of given shading functions in time domain. By applying the shading weights on the sensor array, we can see that the level of sidelobe becomes diminished and the performance of estimating range and azimuth gets improved. In addition, we propose a non-uniform structure in terms of frequency bands, which may minimize the attenuation of incoming signals.

Low frequency towed line array with high array gain and beam resolution is a long range surveillance sensor for anti-submarine warfare. The beam characteristics is however deteriorated due to the distorted line array sensor caused by low towing speed, wind, current, and towing ship maneuvering. An adaptive beamforming method is utilized in this paper to enhance the distorted line array beam performance by estimating and compensating the nonlinear array shape. A polynomial curve fitting in the least square sense is used to estimate the array shape iteratively with the distributed heading sensors data along the array. Real time array shape estimation and nonlinear array beam calculation is applied to a very long towed line array sensor system and the beam performance is evaluated and compared to the linear beamformer for the simulation and sea trial data.
Tailored for wireless local area networks, the present paper proposes a cross-layer resource allocation scheme for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems. Our cross-layer resource allocation scheme consists of three stages. Firstly, the condition of sharing the subchannel by more than one user is studied. Secondly, the subchannel allocation policy which depends on the data packets' lengths and the admissible combination of users per subchannel is proposed. Finally, the bits and corresponding power are allocated to users based on a greedy algorithm and the data packets' lengths. The analysis and simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme not only achieves significant improvement in system throughput and average packet delay compared with conventional schemes but also has low computational complexity.

In this paper, we propose a distributed user scheduling with transmit power control based on the amount of generating interference to other base stations (BSs) in multi-cell multi-input multi-output (MIMO) networks. Assuming that the time-division duplexing (TDD) system is used, the interference channel from users to other cell BSs is obtained at each user. In the proposed scheduling, each user first generates a transmit beamforming vector by using singular value decompositon (SVD) over MIMO channels and reduces the transmit power if its generating interference to other BSs is larger than a predetermined threshold. Each BS selects the user with the largest effective channel gains among users, which reflects the adjusted power of users. Simulation results show that the proposed technique significantly outperforms the existing user scheduling algorithms.

Parallel processing algorithms, coupled with advanced networking and distributed computing architectures, improve the overall computational performance, dependability, and versatility of a digital signal processing system In this paper, novel parallel algorithms are introduced and investigated for advanced sonar algorithm, conventional matched-field processing (CMFP). Based on a specific domain, each parallel algorithm decomposes the sequential workload in order to obtain scalable parallel speedup. Depending on the processing requirement of the algorithm, the computational performance of the parallel algorithm reveals different characteristics. The high-complexity algorithm, CMFP shows scalable parallel performance on the array of DSP processors. The impact on parallel performance due to workload balancing, communication scheme, algorithm complexity, processor speed, network performance, and testbed configuration is explored.
Magnetotelluric data recorded in the middle part of the Korean Peninsula are contaminated by severe noises at dead-band frequencies. In this study, we estimated the location of noise source using a source localization method. Since conventional beamforming techniques were not adequate for the localization of electromagnetic sources, we used the matched field processing and a genetic algorithm. The solutions for the strong noise signals tend to be localized in a narrow area, whereas those for natural MT signals shows randomly distributed patterns. The strong noise sources are mainly located in the western part of Kyonggi-do.

It is well known that reflected waves and resonance affect phase distortion. In addition, phase delay can be distorted by antenna impedance. In this study, we analyze the phase delay variation caused by the antenna impedance, considering mutual coupling effects. In addition, we confirm the beam steering characteristics. When was -10 dB and -7 dB, the maximum phase delay error was $18.5^{\circ}$ and $26.5^{\circ}$, respectively. The Monte Carlo simulation with an eight-element linear array antenna demonstrated that the RMS error of the beam steering angle ranged from $0.19^{\circ}$ to $0.4^{\circ}$, and the standard deviation ranged from $0.14^{\circ}$ to $0.33^{\circ}$ when the beam steering angle was in the range of $0^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$, with the uniformly distributed phase error of $18.5^{\circ}$ and $26.5^{\circ}$. The side lobe level increased from 0.74 dB to 1.21 dB by the phase error from the theoretical value of -12.8 dB, with a standard deviation of 0.31 dB to 0.51 dB. This is verified by designing an eight-element spiral array antenna.
