  • For precise interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data distorted by irregular surface terrain, topography effects are investigated by computing apparent resistivities, phases, tippers and induction vectors for a three-dimensional (3D) hill-and-valley model. To compute MT responses for the 3D surface topography model, we use a 3D MT modeling algorithm based on an edge finite-element method which is free from vector parasites. Distortions on the apparent resistivity and phase are mainly caused by distorted currents that flow along surface topography. The distribution of tipper amplitudes over both hill and valley are the same, while the tipper points toward the center of hill and the base of the valley. The real part of induction vector also points in the same direction as that of tipper, while the imaginary part in the opposite direction.

  • Characteristics of interconnect lines considering underlayer geometries of a silicon substrate and crossing metal lines are experimentally analyzed through elaborately devised patterns. In this work, test patterns for transmission lines having several kinds of underlayer geometries were devised, and the signal characteristics and responses are measured by S-parameter and time domain reflection meter (TDR). The patterns were designed and fabricated with a deep-submicron CMOS DRAM technology having 1 Tungsten and 2 Aluminum metals. From the analysis of measured results on the patterns, it is founded that the effects of underlayter line structures on line parameters (especially line capacitance and resistance) and signal distortions occurred from them cannot be negligible. The results provide useful and insightful understanding in the skew balance of package leads and global signal lines such as high-speed clock and data lines.

  • In this paper, we introduce a novel model to analyze the linearity of a TW-EAM (traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator). The device length, microwave loss (ML), and internal reflection (IR) due to impedance mismatch have effect on the linearity of a TW-EAM. The longer devices have characteristics of lower biases with minimum IMDS (intermodulation distortions). ML decreases the output power as well as the IMD value. Internal reflection has different nonlinear characteristics according to the wavelength of the input frequency and the device length. There is little change in SFDR (spurious-free dynamic range) due to ML or IR. As a result, for a 50 GHz band RF-optical communication system, a 0.8 mm-long TW-EAM with the lowest ML would have better properties by using n, which is caused by impedance, mismatch at the output port.

  • A speech enhancement algorithm which attenuates nonstationary colored noise is presented In this paper. The algorithm consists of a stationary Kalman filter and the simple speech/nonspeech detector. While the conventional enhancement systems are focused on a stationary and/or white background noise, this study Is focused on the mort realistic nonstationary and nonwhite noise. An AR model-based vector Kalman filter is used as a noise suppression system and a short-time energy threshold logic is used as a speech/nonspeech classifier. For Kalman filtering. noise coefficients are estimated in the nonspeech frame, and speech coefficients are estimated by applying the EM iteration algorithm. Simulation results using the car noise are presented based on the signal-to-noise ratio and informal listening tests. According to the experimental results, background noises in the nonspeech frames are eliminated almost completely, while some distortions are noticed in the speech frames. The distortion becomes severer as the SNR is reduced to 0dB and -5dB. Intelligibility, however, is not degraded significantly.

  • This study was done to analyze the sound distortion, before and after insertion of the palatal palates. For this study, 4 healthy subjects (3 males and 1 female, each 24-year-old), who were born in Seoul were recruited from K university, and 3 type palatal plates were fabricated, each palatal thickness being 1.0mm, 2.5mm, dentoalveolar portion 2.5mm and elsewhere 1.0mm, named B,C,D-type repectively, and informants's sounds of /사(sa), 서(se), 소(so), 수(su), 스($s\.{+}$), 시(si)/ were recorded, without plate, and with palatal plates of different types, in succession. A series of analysis were adminstered through a 16 Bit IBM PC/AT using linear combination methods. These experiments were analyzed by the Cepstrum (Weighted and Euclidian), Log Area Ratio, Linear prediction correlation methods The findings led to the following conclusions : 1. It was confirmed that the same consonant, /ㅅ(s)/, variously distorted by the following vowel. 2. By and large, 시($s\.{+}$) was the most distorted in all conditions, and (sa), 소(so) were the least distorted in each condition. 3. There were no persistant correlation of the palatal plate types, and sound distortions of each informant were diverse with no regularities. 4. There were persistent correaltion to the Cepstrum (Weighted, Euclidian), Log Area Ratio. However, Linear prediction correlation has a different alteration pattern.

  • This paper proposes the methods for improving the recognition rate of theARS, especially equipped with the speech recognition capability. Telephone speech, which is the input to the ARS, is usually affected by the announcements from the system, channel noise, and channel distortion, thus directly applying the recognition algorithm developed for clean speech to the noisy telephone speech will bring the significant performance degradation. To cope with this problem, this paper proposes three methods: 1)the accurate detection of the inputting instant of the speech in order to immediately turn off the announcements from the system at that instant, 2)the effective end-point detection of the noisy telephone speech on the basis of Teager energy, and 3)the SDCN-based compensation of the channel distortion. Experiments on speaker-independent, noisy telephone speech reveal that the combination of the above three proposed methods provides great improvements on the recognition rate over the conventional method, showing about 77% in contrast to only 23%.

  • The enormous disaster (Friday nightmare) occurred at 14:46 (JST) (05:46 UTC) on 11 March 2011, officially named "the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami". To monitor the variations of the marine environment after the earthquake, we used chlorophyll and Rrs(555) of GOCI and MODIS ocean color satellite data during March ~ May 2011. Before the earthquake, chlorophyll and Rrs(555) were relatively low around the Sendai areas. After the earthquake;their concentration and intensity were suddenly increased along the coast and the water column was disturbed by the tsunami wave. The severe distortions influenced by the tsunami occurred at less than 30 m water depth and the variations in offshore were difficult to discern the effect of the tsunami. The disturbance by the tsunami was still remained in the terrestrial environment after one month. However the ocean environment returned to the former condition in almost two month later.

  • A method that is adaptively selecting among previous fast motion estimation algorithms and a newly proposed fast motion estimation algorithm(UCDS) is presented in this paper. The algorithm named AUDC and a newly proposed fast motion estimation algorithms are based on the Diamond Search(DS) algorithm and Three Step Search(TSS). Although many previous fast motion estimation algorithms have lots of advantages, those have lots of disadvantages. So we thought better adaptive selection of fast motion estimation algorithms than only using one fast motion estimation algorithm. Therefore, we propose AUDC that is using length of the MV, Search Point, SAD of the neighboring block and adaptively selecting among Cross Three Step Search(CTSS), Diamond Search(DS) and Ungraded Cross Diamond Search(UCDS). Experimental results show that the AUDC is much more robust, provides a faster searching speed, and smaller distortions than other popular fast block-matching at algorithms.

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems utilizing direct conversion receiver suffer from frequency selective (FS) and frequency independent (FI) phase and gain imbalances caused by imperfect local oscillator and low pass filter. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the transmit/receive IQ imbalances on the system and propose the estimation and compensation schemes for those imbalances. The preamble signals coded by Alamouti scheme in the frequency domain could be used in the estimation of relatively large IQ imbalances with FS and FI characteristics and the estimation results are used for the compensation of distortions caused by the FI and FS IQ imbalances. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) receiver or suboptimal ordered successive interference cancallation (OSIC) receiver utilizing the estimation results show symbol error rate (SER) performance improvement compared to zero-forcing (ZF) technique due to diversity gain inherent in the frequency domain IQ imbalances combined with the frequency selective channels.

  • This paper proposes multi-camera system that relies on 3D views for panoramic video and distribution method about panoramic video generation algorithm by using cloud computing. The proposed monitoring system monitors the projected 3D model view, instead of individual 2D views, to detect image distortions. This can minimize compensation errors caused by parallax, thereby improving the quality of the resulting panoramic video. Panoramic video generation algorithm can be divided into registration part and compositing part. Therefore we propose off-loading method of these parts with cloud computing for panoramic video service.
