  • The classical 8-node isoparametric serendipity element uses parametric shape functions for both test and trial functions. Although this element performs well in general, it yields poor results under severe mesh distortions. The distortion sensitivity is caused by the lack of continuity and/or completeness of shape functions used for test and trial functions. A recent element using parametric and metric shape functions for constructing the test and trial functions exhibits distortion immunity. This paper discusses the choice of parametric or metric shape functions as the basis for test and/or trial functions, satisfaction of continuity and completeness requirements, and their connection to distortion sensitivity. Also, the performances of four types of elements, viz., parametric, metric, parametric-metric, and metric-parametric, are compared for distorted meshes, and their merits and demerits are discussed.

  • In autobody assembly, thin-wall, tubular connections have been used for the frame structure. Recent interest in light materials, such as aluminum or magnesium alloys, has been rapidly growing for weight reduction and fuel efficiency. Due to higher thermal expansion coefficient, low stiffness/strength, and low softening temperature of aluminum and magnesium alloys, control of welding-induced distortion in these connections becomes a critical issue. In this study, the material sensitivity to welding distortion was investigated using a T-tubular connection of three types materials; low carbon steel (A500 Gr. A), aluminum alloy (5456-H116) and magnesium alloy (AZ91C-T6). An uncoupled thermal and mechanical finite element analysis scheme using the ABAQUS software program was developed to model and simulate the welding process, welding procedure and material behaviors. The predicted angular distortions were correlated to the cumulative plastic strains. A unique relationship between distortion and plastic strains exists for all three materials studied. The amount of distortion is proportional to the magnitude and distribution of the cumulative plastic strains in the weldment. The magnesium alloy has the highest distortion sensitivity, followed by the other two materials with the steel connection having the least distortion. Results from studies of thin-aluminum plates show that welding distortion can be minimized by reducing the cumulative plastic strains by preventing heat diffusion into the base metal using a strong heat sink placed directly beneath the weld. A rapid cooling method is recommended to reduce welding distortion of magnesium tubular connections.

  • Several metrics have been reported in the literature to assess stereo image quality, mostly based on visual attention or human visual sensitivity based distortion prediction with the help of disparity information, which do not consider the combined aspects of human visual processing. In this paper, visual attention and depth assisted stereo image quality assessment model (VAD-SIQAM) is devised that consists of three main components, i.e., stereo attention predictor (SAP), depth variation (DV), and stereo distortion predictor (SDP). Visual attention is modeled based on entropy and inverse contrast to detect regions or objects of interest/attention. Depth variation is fused into the attention probability to account for the amount of changed depth in distorted stereo images. Finally, the stereo distortion predictor is designed by integrating distortion probability, which is based on low-level human visual system (HVS), responses into actual attention probabilities. The results show that regions of attention are detected among the visually significant distortions in the stereo image pair. Drawbacks of human visual sensitivity based picture quality metrics are alleviated by integrating visual attention and depth information. We also show that positive correlation with ground-truth attention and depth maps are increased by up to 0.949 and 0.936 in terms of the Pearson and the Spearman correlation coefficients, respectively.

  • In this paper, assumed mode method on Euler beam theory is employed and signal distortion is considered to obtain the performances of a MEMS accelerometer which are a sensitivity and measurable frequency range(MFR). Not only the sensitivities and MFR but also the variations of dynamic responses and natural frequencies of the MEMS accelerometer are investigated for several sets of beam properties such as length, width, thickness and Young's modulus. It is stated that the variations of beam properties significantly influence the performances of the MEMS accelerometer and the relationship between sensitivities and MFR is inversely proportional to each other.

  • According to the characteristics of adaptive JPEG steganography which determines the changed DCT coefficients based on embedding distortion, a new steganalysis method by selecting the DCT coefficients with small distortion values is proposed. Firstly, the principle of adaptive JPEG steganography through minimizing distortion is introduced. Secondly, the practicability of selecting the changed DCT coefficients according to distortion values is studied. Thirdly, the proposed steganalysis method is given and the embedding sensitivity of the steganalysis feature extracted from the selected DCT coefficients is analyzed. Lastly, the implement processes of the proposed method are presented and analyzed in details. In the experiments, PQt, PQe and J-UNIWARD steganography are used as examples to verify the effect of the proposed steganalysis method for adaptive JPEG steganography. A serial experimental results show the detection accuracy can be improved obviously, especially when the payload is relatively low.

  • In general fractal imge compression, each range block is approximated by a contractive transform of the matching domain block under the mean squared error criterion. In this paper, a distortion measure reflecting the properties of human visual system is defined and applied to a fractal image compression. the perceptual distortion measure is obtained by multiplying the mean square error and the noise sensitivity modeled by using the background brightness and spatial masking. In order to compare the performance of the mean squared error and perceptual distortion measure, a simulation is carried out by using the 512*512 Lena and papper gray image. Compared to the results, 6%-10% compression ratio improvements under improvements under the same image quality are achieved in the perceptual distortion measure.

  • Ultrasound devices diagnose many disease, which is widely used, can not be standardized quantitative evaluated in order to evaluate sonography image of quality. Therefore, in this papers, aims to get correct image in order to accurate diagnosis by figuring out the appropriate parameter based on each target by measuring distortion which results in the analyzation of the sensitivity of SNR and the histogram of signal by manipulating parameter of 8 mm target in ATS-539 multipurpose phantom. Equipment using Acuson sequoia 512, convex probe and utilizes multi-objective phantom. experiment method is that first you put the phantom on the flat and acquire 85 sheets of image, changing frequency(2,3,4 MHz, harmonic 3, 4, 4.5 MHz), Focus(2, 4, 6 unit), and Dynamic Range(58, 68, 78, 88, 98) for a 8 mm structure. through the Image J program. The sensitivity angle of 8mm target through Image J program is gauged by each separate target SNR and the distorted angle subtract and measure Histogram of background from Histogram of signal and take top 40% from the given result value above. According to parameter variation we found out proper parameter by acquiring SNR of sensitivity and distortion data for aspect of transition. The more this findings have Focus, the lower distortion value and at 4 MHz frequency this result have high SNR and low distortion value. Dynamic Range got an appropriate image on 88 and 98. It is considered on the basis of the experimental data, the probability of disease diagnosis will get higher.

  • In this paper five-order Butterworth Low pass active RC filter is designed by using FDNR (Frequency Dependent Ncgative Resistor) Method from LC ladder filter having the lowest sensitivity. In process of Transformation to SCF (Switched Capacitor Filter) from active RC filter, Bilinear Z Transfomation method is utilized. By the design of SCF using the bilinear Z transform method the problem of aliasing can be avoided, but the frequency distortion is generated. The transformation from analog filter to digital filter is not equal in the region of the cut off frequency caused by this effect. Avoiding the problem of this effect, we use prewarping method. The result shows that the prewarped SCF makes more remarkable improvement in the frequency distortion than SCF which is transformed by using bilinear Z transform.

  • An alternative interpretation of the completeness requirements for the higher order elements is presented. Apart from the familiar condition, $\sum_iN_i=1$, some additional conditions to be satisfied by the shape functions of higher order elements are identified. Elements with their geometry in the natural form, i.e., without any geometrical distortion, satisfy most of these additional conditions inherently. However, the geometrically distorted elements satisfy only fewer conditions. The practical implications of the satisfaction or non-satisfaction of these additional conditions are investigated with respect to a 3-node bar element, and 8- and 9-node quadrilateral elements. The results suggest that non-satisfaction of these additional conditions results in poorer performance of the element when the element is geometrically distorted. Based on the new interpretation of completeness requirements, a 3-node element and an 8-node rectangular element that are insensitive to mid-node distortion under a quadratic displacement field have been developed.

  • The accuracy of MR sensor-based electronic compass is influenced by the temperature drift and DC offset of the MR sensor and the OP-amp, the magnetic distortion of nearby magnetic materials, and the compass tilt We design the 3-axis MR sensor and accelerometers-based electronic compass which is compensated by the set/reset pulse switching method on the temperature drift and DC offset, by the execution of hard-iron calibration routine on the magnetic distortion, and by the execution of the Euler rotational equation on the compass tilt. We qualitatively analyze the measured azimuth error on the execution of sensitivity calibration routine which is the normalization process on the different sensitivity of each MR sensor and the different gain of each op-amps. This compensation and analytic result make us design the one degree accuracy electronic compass.
