  • Aqueous urethane dispersion resin begins to assume commercial importance due to increasing environmental awareness of VOC in coating industry. Moreover there have been strong industrial needs for the development of reactive-type polyurethane flame retardant coatings. In this study, chlorinated polyester polyols were synthesized by two step polycondensation reaction using mono chloroacetic acid, adipic acid, trimethylol propane, and 1,4-butanediol. In the next step polyurethane dispersion was prepared using these chlorinated polyester polyols and isophorone diisocyanate with dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA) and trimethylamine. The structure of chlorinated polyol was characterized by GPC, FT-IR and NMR. Particle size and its distribution were examined in terms of various dispersion parameters including molecular weight and composition of polyol, amount of DMPA, and NCO/OH ratio, etc. The effect of chlorinated polyols on flammability was also evaluated.

  • Polymer cement slurry (PCS) is made from organic polymer dispersion and cement has good adhesion to steel, waterproofness and acid resistance due to being of polymer films formed in cement slurry. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bond strength of coated rebar by polymer cement slurry made of EVA and ultra high-early strength cement. The test pieces are prepared with EVA polymer dispersion and ultra high-early strength cement having four types of polymer-cement ratios, four types of coating thicknesses and four curing ages, and tested for the bond strength test. From the test results, in general, bond strength of PCS-coated rebar is better than that of uncoated rebar and epoxy-coated rebar. It is also high bond strength at curing ages of 7-day, and coating thicknesses of $75{\mu}m$ and $100{\mu}m$. The maximum bond strength of PCS-coated rebar with ultra high-early strength cement and EVA at polymer-cement ratio of 80%, and coating thickness of $100{\mu}m$ is about 1.32 and 1.38 times respectively, the strength of uncoated rebar and epoxy-coated rebar. It is apparent that the curing age, coating thickness, type of polymer and cement are very important factors to improve the bond strength of PCS-coated rebar to cement concrete. We can have basic information that PCS-coated rebar with polymer-cement ratio of 80% or 100% and coating thickness of $100{\mu}m$ at curing age of 1-day can replace epoxy-coated rebar.

  • Conventional paints for conversion coating applications in steel production derived mainly from water-based polymer dispersions containing several additives actually show good general performance, but suffer from poor scratch and abrasion resistance during use. The reason for this is because the relatively soft organic binder matrix dominates the mechanical surface properties. In order to maintain the high quality and decorative function of coated steel sheets, the mechanical performance of the surface needs to be improved significantly. In fact the wear resistance should be enhanced without affecting the optical appearance of the coatings by using appropriate nanoparticulate additives. In this direction, nanocomposite coating compositions (Nanomer$^{(R)}$) have been derived from water-based polymer dispersions with an increasing amount of surface-modified nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion in order to monitor the effect of degree of filling with rigid nanoparticles. The surface of nanoparticles has been modified for optimum compatibility with the polymer matrix in order to achieve homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion over the matrix. This approach has been extended in such a way that a more expanded hybrid network has been condensed on the nanoparticle surface by a hydrolytic condensation reaction in addition to the quasi-monolayer type small molecular surface modification. It was expected that this additional modification will lead to more intensive cross-linking in coating systems resulting in further improved scratch-resistance compared to simple addition of nanoparticles with quasi-monolayer surface modification. The resulting compositions have been coated on zinc-galvanized steel and cured. The wear resistance and the corrosion protection of the modified coating systems have been tested in dependence on the compositional change, the type of surface modification as well as the mixing conditions with different shear forces. It has been found out that for loading levels up to 50 wt.-% nanoparticles, the mechanical wear resistance remains almost unaffected compared to the unmodified resin. In addition, the corrosion resistance remained unaffected even after $180^{\circ}$ bending test showing that the flexibility of coating was not decreased by nanoparticle addition. Electron microscopy showed that the inorganic nanoparticles do not penetrate into the organic resin droplets during the mixing process but rather formed agglomerates outside the polymer droplet phase resulting in quite moderate cross linking while curing, because of viscosity. The proposed mechanisms of composite formation and cross linking could explain the poor effect regarding improvement of mechanical wear resistance and help to set up new synthesis strategies for improved nanocomposite morphologies, which should provide increased wear resistance.

  • NCO terminated polyurethane prepolymers were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), polycarbonate diol(PCD) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA). Subsequently, acrylic terminated polyurethanes were prepared by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymers with different types of acrylate monomers, such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA) and pentaerythritol triacrylate(PETA). The average particle sizes of the acrylic terminated polyurethane solutions were increased by capping acrylate monomers. Also, the prepared coating films showed better abrasion resistance and pencil hardness than those of pure waterborne polyurethanes. The coating film with PETA exhibited the best abrasion resistance and pencil hardness of coating films prepared with three acrylate monomers.

  • Ternary phased graphene/silica/EVOH nanocomposite coating materials were prepared via sol-gel process and solution blending process. From both SEM observations and XRD analysis, the exfoliated structure and dispersion state of graphene nanosheets and silica particles in the nanocomposites as well as the intercalated and exfoliated structure of the prepared graphene oxide were confirmed. The incorporation of GrO and silica at appropriate content resulted in remarkable improvement in oxygen barrier property of the ternary phased nanocompoiste-coated BOPP films, compared with that of binary(silica/EVOH) phased nanocomposite coating films, however, at excess amount of GrO and silica, very slight variation was observed due to incomplete exfoliation, dispersion of graphene tactoids, and formation of micro cracks in the silica clusters. In addition, the transparency of nanocomposite-coated film was investigated by measuring the light transmittance as a function of GrO contents, suggesting the possibility for the application of food packaging films.

  • Although the basalt fiber has superior fire-resistance and chemical resistance, it has many disadvantages in its applications. Generally, the tensile and loop strengths of basalt fiber were decreased with generated frictional heat during industial appplications. To solve this problem, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating system was introduced and a sutable coating condition was evaluated. The basalt fiber was pre-treated with triethoxytrifluoropropylsilane (TMTFPS) at various pHs and then coated with PTFE dispersions with penetrating agent sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfo succinate (DOS-Na) to increase the tensile and loop strengths as well as to reduce the fibril during working. A universial testing machine (Instron Model 3366) was used to measure tensile and loop strengths. When the PTFE dispersion with 0.25 wt% of DOS-Na was coated on the surface of basalt fiber after pre-treating with 5 wt% of PTFE, the highest tensile and loop strengths were reached to 3.5 gf/D and 2.4 gf/D, respectively.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) aluminum composite powders were deposited to form coatings using a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying process. High thermal energy and contact with atmospheric oxygen were supplied as the MWCNT aluminum composite particles were exposed to a gas flow field at high temperature (${\sim}3.0{\times}10^3$ K) during HVOF spraying. As a result, the particles underwent full or partial melting and rapid solidification due to the high thermal energy, and the exposure to oxygen induced the interfacial reaction of MWCNTs within the particle. The electrical and mechanical properties of MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were evaluated based on microstructure analysis. Electrical resistivity, elastic modulus, and micro-hardness, of the MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were higher than those of pure aluminum coating. The contribution of MWCNTs to the aluminum matrix can be attributed to their high electrical conductivity, dispersion hardening and anchoring effects. The relationship among the properties and the interaction of the MWCNTs with the aluminum matrix is discussed.

  • Waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD) were synthesized from poly (carbonate diol), isophrone diisocyanate and dimethylol propionic acid at different NCO/OH molar ratios. Subsequently, the PUD was mixed with different types of alkali metal salts ($LiClO_4$, $NaClO_4$, and $KClO_4$) to prepare antistatic waterborne polyurethane coating solutions. Effects of the types and amounts of alkali metal salts were investigated on the surface resistances of the resulting coating films. The surface resistances of coating films were decreased with increasing the amounts of alkali metal salts added in the PUD. The coating films prepared with the same amount of alkali metal salts showed increased ionic conductivity with the order of $LiClO_4$ > $NaClO_4$ > $KClO_4$. Also, the surface resistances of coating films were increased with increasing the molar ratios of NCO/OH in the PUD.

  • As automation systems become more common, there is growing interest in functional labeling systems using organic and inorganic hybrid materials. Especially, the demand for thermally and chemically stable labeling paper that can be used in a high temperature environment above $300^{\circ}C$ and a strong acid and base atmosphere is increasing. In this study, a composite coating solution for the development of labeling paper with excellent thermal and chemical stability is prepared by mixing a silica inorganic binder and titanium dioxide. The silica inorganic binder is synthesized using a sol-gel process and mixed with titanium dioxide to improve whiteness at high-temperature. Adhesion between the polyimide substrate and the coating layer is secured and the surface properties of the coating layer, including the thermal and chemical stability, are investigated in detail. The effects of the coating solution dispersion on the surface properties of the coating layer are also analyzed. Finally, it is confirmed that the developed functional labeling paper showed excellent printability.

  • Composite coating can be manufactured during the electroplating with the bath containing a suspension of particles: ceramic, polymer, nanopowders. Improvement of hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and lubrication properties are well-known advantage of composite coating. In this study, nano $TiO_2$ powder dispersed Ni composite plating was investigated. The improvement of surface hardness and photo decomposition effects can be expected in this coating. Zeta potential was measured with pH. The effect of ultrasonication time and types of ultrasonicator were studied to minimize the agglomeration of $TiO_2$ nanopowders in the electrolyte. Optimum conditions for nano $TiO_2$ dispersed Ni composite coating were $40mA/cm^2$ of current density, pH 3.5, and $50^{\circ}C$. At these conditions, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles contents in the Ni deposit was 15-20 at.%.
