Development of a shared remote control robot for aerial work in nuclear power plants

  • We are developing a shared remote control mobile robot for aerial work in nuclear power plants (NPPs); a robot consists of a mobile platform, a telescopic mast, and a dual-arm slave with a working tool. It is used at a high location operating the manual operation mechanism of a fuel changer of a heavy water NPP. The robot system can cut/weld a pipe remotely in the case of an emergency or during the dismantling of the NPP. Owing to the challenging control mission considering limited human operator cognitive capability, some remote tasks require a shared control scheme, which demands systematic software design and integration. Therefore, we designed the architecture of the software systematically.

  • Repeated using carpentry workers work at working tools because of occupational low back pain, such as musculoskeletal disorders, occupational diseases are on the rise. For this purpose, through the analysis of musculoskeletal disorders and work tools and studies are underway to improve the working conditions of the workers. However, existing previous studies may not reflect the working tools used for carpentry worker dies when working at a construction site that Therefore, in this study, the work in the form of construction, one of the jobs of worker dies classified according to the working tools of musculoskeletal disorders correlated to analyze. The results of this study are as follows. working tools of a total of seven different dies used in the installation process. Musculoskeletal disorders, waist / drill such correlation was very strong. Also showed that a total of three of the tools used in the formwork dismantling cutter musculoskeletal disorders of the arm / elbow and a very strong correlation.

  • Field robots are used in various fields, such as agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, and construction; their use has recently expanded to include submarine areas. Field robots can aid in various tasks, such as soil transport, ground clearance, and dismantling of buildings. As field robots are used in a variety of different areas, the difficulty of the work is also quite varied. Increased difficulty is associated with an increased risk of accidents involving the field robot. In order to reduce the accident rate of field robot workers, the need for digitalization and automation of field robots is becoming more of an issue. To this end, it is necessary to study a system that enables workers to do their work without directly contacting a field robot. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a control system for wireless remote control of a small field robot. The field robot can be wirelessly controlled by a worker in a remote location if the worker cannot be present at the work site. The implemented remote system is tested according to the type of work, and the operating characteristics of the remote system are assessed.

Analysis of the Work Time and the Collective Dose by Correcting the Learning-Forgetting Curve Model in Decommissioning of a Nuclear Facility

  • Background: As the number of nuclear facilities nearing their pre-determined design life increases, demand is increasing for technology and infrastructure related to the decommissioning and decontamination (D&D) process. It is necessary to consider the nature of the dismantling environment constantly changing and the worker doing new tasks. A method was studied that can calculate the effect of learning and the change in work time on the work process, according to the learning-forgetting curve model (LFCM). Materials and Methods: The LFCM was analyzed, and input values and scenarios were analyzed for substitution into the D&D process of a nuclear facility. Results and Discussion: The effectiveness and efficiency of the training were analyzed. It was calculated that skilled workers can receive a 16.9% less collective radiation dose than workers with only basic training. Conclusion: Using these research methods and models, it was possible to calculate the change in the efficiency of workers performing new tasks in the D&D process and the corresponding reduction in the work time and collective dose.

  • Hydraulic excavator is one of the most widely used heavy machines in construction sites including dismantling. In the dismantling sites, the excavators equipped with crusher or breaker carry out dangerous operations, so drivers are always exposed to unexpected danger. For safety operation, remote control of the hydraulic excavator has been studied using proportional control valve, which requires an appropriate motion control of its bucket tip. In this case, kinematics and dynamics analysis have to be preceded through modeling of excavator. However, it is difficult to acquire reasonable results from the analysis due to insufficient information of physical parameters such as mass of each links and locations of mass centers, etc. This study deals with the trajectory control of bucket tip, which is based on experimental estimation of cylinder output force. The estimated forces are fed into the control of each cylinder in order to compensate gravitational and frictional effects in the cylinders. The control was applied to horizontal trajectories that are for flattening work.

  • This paper is to study on the decommissioning cost estimation for nuclear facilities of advanced nuclear organizations and countries for deriving the cost factors to be taken considerations into accomplishing decommissioning projects. Of cost categories producing the factors of decommissioning costs, dismantling and waste processing & disposals activities are examined to increase the its costs. Of labor, materials and other costs categories, labor costs are summarized to have overall majorities in the decommissioning cost factors. The main parameters of all factors affecting the decommissioning costs are analyzed as work difficulty, regional labor costs, peripheral cost, disposal cost and final burial costs.

High-power fiber laser cutting parameter optimization for nuclear Decommissioning

  • For more than 10 years, the laser process has been studied for dismantling work; however, relatively few research works have addressed the effect of high-power fiber laser cutting for thick sections. Since in the nuclear sector, a significant quantity of thick material is required to be cut, this study aims to improve the reliability of laser cutting for such work and indicates guidelines to optimize the cutting procedure, in particular, nozzle combinations (standoff distance and focus position), to minimize waste material. The results obtained show the performance levels that can be reached with 10 kW fiber lasers, using which it is possible to obtain narrower kerfs than those found in published results obtained with other lasers. Nonetheless, fiber lasers appear to show the same effects as those of $CO_2$ and ND:YAG lasers. Thus, the main factor that affects the kerf width is the focal position, which means that minimum laser spot diameters are advised for smaller kerf widths.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between aluminum form work and noise-induced deafness by conducting special health examination on construction aluminum worker and noise measurement at the workplace. All the 11 aluminum form workers were diagnosed with noise-induced deafness after holding a special health examination. The workers have not had any previous history of noise-induced deafness which indicates that aluminum form work is related to noise-induced deafness disease. The impact noise of 120 dB(A)~125 dB(A), which exceeds the regulations of industrial safety and health act, was found during the dismantling rather than installation when noise measurement was made at the aluminum workplace. The aluminum form workers could permanently lose the hearing sense if they are exposed to this impact noise. This study is to suggest the method to prevent noise-induced deafness for aluminum form workers by firstly giving out hearing protection equipment at the construction site and secondly installing rubber mat, soundproof panel as well as changing the noise-lowering technique.

  • This study is about the conservation treatment from 2008 through 2009 of Gilt-Bronze Cap excavated from Andong tumulus at Guildu-ri, Podumyeon, Goheung, Jeonnan. The whole shape of Gilt-Bronze Cap was distorted and destroyed by the earth pressure. For the conservation treatment, first, soil and pollutants came from the findspot were removed. And then to assemble the whole shape of Gilt-Bronze Cap, we carried out the jointing work forming the shape after dismantling. Under that process, the rust of bronze was removed through the microscope at every moment and the gold-plated surface was revealed. Now the conservation treatment was completed and it is expected to perform the scientific research on the manufacturing methods and composition analysis of Gilt-Bronze Cap.

Analysis of Human Factors Involved in Construction Projects by Accident Types Approach (사고 형태별 접근을 통한 건설 프로젝트에서의 인적 요인 분석)

  • Developed in the study is the analysis of human factors involved in accidents of Korean Construction Projects. The 556 cases are sampled from a survey material 'Serious Accident Cases in the Construction Projects' edited by Korea Industrial Safety Corporation in 1995 through 1997. The analysis of these cases shows that existing classification system is not good for practical applications in real spots since they are difficult for engineers to understand. In this paper, human factors are classified into three groups by extracting the analysis and arrangement of the cases. Futhermore, We'll propose here a new type of accident which is subdivided. If engineers use this type of accident, they will be probably able to analyze efficiently human factors which are involved in accidents and relatied with how it happen. In the case of fall and upset accidents, personal factors seem to be critical when workers are horizontally moving in an unstable manner, and vertically moving without boarding facilities. Futhermore work environmental factors are important when workers release some materials and are performing building and dismantling tasks.
