The Inquiry of Students' Attitude towards Group Discussion and Presentation in a Course of Mathematics Education

  • This research is a survey study on students' attitude toward a class employing small group discussion and presentation by the method of free-listing. Participants in this study were students who registered in the course of Mathematical Logics and Writing during 2011 and 2014. Senior students who took the course of theory of mathematics education previously usually registered the course. The class for this course used to be designed as a class adopting group discussion and presentation. Main theme of this research is not to demonstrate some theories or hypothesis on teaching and learning, but rather to inquire students' attitude toward a class employing the constituents first and then through analyzing the results of this study to find practical ideas and strategy for design and implementation of a class which brings cultivation of students' understanding, communication and moreover writing in mathematics. Since the survey was given in the $8^{th}$ week of this class, participants of this research could be expected to have more concrete idea for positive or negative aspects of the classes employing these constituents. We compared both research results of 2011 and 2014 to view any changes in students' attitude. Research results are follows. Students began to think that group discussions and presentation bring out better learning to them. Not to give students psychological burden of discussion and presentation, instructors need to provide comfortable atmosphere through arranging suitable grouping and enough time for discussion. Moreover, simple evaluations criteria for group discussions and presentation should be well structured and more concrete guides for them are required to make students to feel comfortable and to concentrate on the given subject for discussion.

  • 본 논문에서는 복잡적응계 이론에 근거하여 공학교육인증제도와 글쓰기와의 관계를 분석하고 효과적인 공학적 글쓰기 교육 방법을 연구하였다. 인증제도 도입으로 인하여 공학교육은 창발현상을 지속적으로 유지하며 새로운 질서체계를 갖추어 나가고 있는 가운데 의사소통의 중요성을 부각시키고, 다양한 공학적 글쓰기 교육 모형을 요구하고 있다. 이에 대하여 본 연구는 상황학습방법과 글쓰기 포트폴리오 도입 방법을 제안하고, 이를 통해 학생들의 글쓰기 능력향상에 변화가 있었음을 확인하였다. 이러한 논의는 공학교육에서 새로운 공학적 글쓰기 교육 방안을 모색하는 계기가 될 것이다.

Writing education using Characteristics at hypertext

  • This paper focuses on how the latest progress in digital media and technology affects the writing education environment. In the contemporary era, collecting numerous pices of information online, and arranging them to create new knowledge is important. There is also a need to seek new methods for writing education to stay in tune with the times. To that end, this paper suggests an open writing model using hypertexts. This writing model consists of a total of five stages, which are use of information, compilation of information, open mutual discussion, search of additional information and writing to recreate knowledge. The final outcome of such writing is writing using footnotes. By describing the gist of the keyword and adding numerous footnotes, such writing opens up an infinite possibility of re-creating information into new knowledge. This method can help university students who are accustomed to the digital society to proactively use information and improve multi-disciplinary communication skills required today. This author applied such a model to university writing education and found that more than 82% of the students were satisfied. Through the process of collaboration and recreation of knowledge in writing, learners found distinct benefits and noted their horizons had broadened. Given this effect, the open writing model using hypertexts is meaningful in that it forms a learning community that goes beyond a one-way feedback from instructor to student and instead nudges students to realize collective intellect. Moreover, it is meaningful in that it moves away from a top-down approach of the instructors passing down knowledge about writing and its rules, and towards a more proactive involvement by students in creating knowledge.

포스트모던 연극에 대한 반성과 한국연극의 미학적 지평 : '정치적 글쓰기' (Reflection of post-modern theater and aesthetic horizon of Korean theater: "political writing")

  • Under the influence of postmodernism, modern writing tends to refuse an immediate conveyance of messages achieved by linear, unified writing. Such writing does not attempt any social participation and has no leading ethics, offering diverse perspectives. It simply relies on material property ignoring the 'here and now'. This discussion depends on the sensuous immediacy of works that are pure and uninterpretable, causing the "death of author" phenomena. Although the time was late, since the 1990s, discussion and work on deconstructive theater has been executed in the Korean theater world. This deconstructive work was achieved when lineal narratives were shattered through the shocking insertion of fragmentary episodes and imagery. Moreover, such plays were shocking presentations of severance in conversation; lack of communication; loss of pride and love; and a world devastated by violence and madness. In the 2000s, such a movement helped form a new paradigm in the theater through reinterpretation and parody of traditional dramas, while drawing general attention to postmodern theater. However, as the problems of postmodern theater are perceived through study, the limit of plays with a postmodern tendency is pointed out: such plays merely display 'deconstruction'. This thesis will examine reflective thought on postmodern theater seeking "deconstruction without alternatives" and the aesthetic concept of "le politique" by Jacques Ranciere. It will also look through the overlap of images as interval-estrangement, "lettre morte", and simulacre representing mise-en-scene aesthetics weaving "political writing". This study is meaningful in that it tries to extend the new aesthetic horizon of Korean theater, examining in 2009 and by Koh Sun-Woong in 2011, directed by Park Chung-Hee in 2010 and directed by Park Keun-Hyung in 2009.

학생들의 보고서 쓰기에 대한 개방적 참탐구 활동 수행의 효과 (The effect of practicing the authentic open inquiry on compositions of laboratory reports)

  • 이 연구에서는 개방적 참탐구 활동을 수행한 학생들의 탐구보고서에서 과학자들의 보고서 쓰기에서와 같은 특징이 나타나는지 살펴보고, 개방적 참탐구 활동 수행 후 실시한 학급 토론활동이 탐구보고서 쓰기에 미치는 효과에 대해서 알아보았다. 서울시 소재 과학고등학교 1학년 학생들을 대상으로 비교집단(전통적 학교탐구 수행, n=45), 실험집단 1(개방적 참탐구 활동 수행, n=43), 실험집단 2(개방적 참탐구 활동 수행 후 학급토론 실시, n=43)로 구분하여, 탐구를 수행하게 한 후 작성한 보고서를 분석하였다. 보고서 분석은 실험 결과에 대한 예상하기(근거제시 및 기술의 타당성), 데이터 해석하기(데이터전환 및 비판적 해석), 결론쓰기(실험결과에 기초한 객관적 진술)를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 그 결과 실험집단에서 과학자들의 보고서쓰기 특징이 나타나는 빈도가 비교집단보다 높게 나타났다. 특히 '근거를 제시하여 예상하기(p<.01)'와 '데이터에 대한 비판적인 평가(p<.05)'에서 유의미한 차이를 나타내었다. 그러나 결론쓰기에서는 세 집단 모두 실험결과에 기초하여 객관적으로 기술하는 빈도가 아주 낮게 나타났다. 보고서의 기술 내용면에서는, 실험집단에서 실험결과에 대한 예상이 훨씬 더 정교하게 기술되어 있었고, 데이터 전환의 정확성과 데이터에 대한 비판적 해석을 볼 수 있었다. 그리고 실험집단 2의 학생들의 보고서에서는 데이터에 대한 비판적 해석, 실험의 오차에 대한 기술을 볼 수 있었고, 이는 학급 토론활동이 학생들에게 과학적 사고를 하게 하는데 효과적임을 의미한다.

소집단 토론과 시각적 학습 양식이 그리기와 쓰기를 활용한 다중 표상 학습에 미치는 영향: 화학 개념을 중심으로 (The Influences of Small Group Discussion and Students' Visual Learning Style on Learning with Multiple Representations Using Drawing and Writing: Focused on Chemical Concepts)

  • 이 연구에서는 소집단 토론이 화학 개념 학습에서 제공되는 외적 표상들 간의 연계와 통합을 촉진하는 방안으로서의 그리기와 쓰기에 미치는 영향을 학생들의 시각적 학습 양식에 따라 조사하였다. 남녀공학 중학교 1학년 학생 449명을 개별 그리기 집단, 2인 1조의 소집단 그리기 집단, 개별 쓰기 집단, 2인 1조의 소집단 쓰기 집단에 배치한 후, '보일의 법칙', '샤를의 법칙'에 대하여 2차시 동안 수업을 실시하였다. 개념 이해도 검사 결과, 시각적 학습 양식과 관계없이 개별 그리기 집단보다 소집단 그리기 집단의 점수가 통계적으로 유의미한 차이로 높았다. 쓰기 집단에서는 시각적 학습 선호 학생들의 경우 소집단 쓰기 집단의 점수가 개별 쓰기 집단의 점수보다 통계적으로 유의미한 차이로 높았으나, 시각적 학습 비선호 학생들의 집단 간 점수 차이는 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았다. 소집단 그리기 집단의 점수가 소집단 쓰기 집단의 점수보다 통계적으로 높은 경향성을 보였다. 많은 학생들이 소집단 그리기와 소집단 쓰기에 대해 인지적, 동기적 측면에서 긍정적으로 인식하였다.

창의적 글쓰기 교육의 현황과 방향 (The Status and Direction of Creative Writing Education)

  • 본 연구는 2000년대 이후 발표된 연구를 통해 창의적 글쓰기 교육의 현황을 파악하고 향후 방향을 논하였다. 창의적 경쟁력을 가진 인재를 양성하자는 정부의 교육 구호에 발맞추어, 모든 학문의 기초로서 창의적 글쓰기는 2000년대에 들어서면서 교양대학의 교과 과정에 도입되기 시작하여, 2015년 이후에는 모든 대학에서 운영하는 교과가 되었다. 이 기간 동안 창의적 글쓰기 교육과 연관한 많은 논문이 발표되었지만, 여전히 인지과학에서 다루는 '창의성'을 고양하는 창의적 글쓰기가 과연 독립적인 학문 체계를 구성할 수 있는지에 대한 논의는 조금 더 심도 있게 전개될 필요가 있어 보인다. 창의적 글쓰기 교육의 쟁점에는 전문적인 교원의 부족과 운영 및 평가의 시스템 부재가 있다. 또한 창의적 글쓰기 교육 범주에 관한 명확한 정의가 필요하고, 선행연구에서 제시된 콘텐츠에 관한 교육적 효과가 충분히 검증되어야 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 이 같은 논의를 위한 기초자료로써 국내 대학의 창의적 글쓰기 교육에 관해 발표된 선행 연구를 시기와 콘텐츠 사례에 따라 분류하여 개괄한 후, 창의적 글쓰기 교육의 운영과 연구에 대한 방향성을 제시하였다.

The Development and Application of International Collaborative Writing Courses on the Internet

  • In this article, I discuss an International Collaborative Writing Course on the Internet (ICWCI) that focused on the learning effectiveness Korean EFL students (KEFLSs) perceived to be necessary to exchange with international EFL students (IEFLSs). The course development was based on an internet-based instructional module, applying widely accepted EFL theories for modern foreign language instruction: collaborative learning, process writing, project-based learning, and integrated approaches. Data from online discussion forum, mid-of-semester and end-of-semester surveys, and final oral interviews are conducted and discussed. KEFLSs and IEFLSs were questioned about (a) changes in attitude towards computers assisted language learning (CALL); (b) effect of computer background on motivation; (c) perception of their acquired writing skills; and (d) attitude towards collaborative learning. The result of this study demonstrated that the majority of ICWCI participants said they enjoyed the course, gained fruitful confidence in English communication and computer skills, and felt that they made significant progress in writing skills. In spite of positive benefits created by the ICWCI, it was found that there were some issues that are crucial to run appropriate networked collaborative courses. This study demonstrates that participants' computer skills, basic language proficiency, and local time differences are important factors to be considered when incorporating the ICWCI as these may affect the quality of online instructional courses and students' motivation toward network based collaboration interaction.

A STUDY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF UNIVERSITY MATHEMATICS COURSE BASED ON REAL LIFE CONTEXT AND CLASSROOM DISCUSSION

  • Modern society demands leaders who are trained with competence to not only approach knowledge but also create new knowledge by comprehensively understanding and applying it, and a leader with character and commitment to share one's ideas with others and be able to accept criticisms. In response to these societal changes, universities are increasingly adopting 'small group discussion-based classes with an attempt to develop and strengthen communication skills through reading, writing and speaking. This paper seeks to introduce a case of a math lecture, where discussion-based class was applied to mathematical education, requiring practical problem-solving through an argumentative thought process.

플립러닝과 전략적 텍스트를 활용한 이공계 글쓰기 교육 방법 모색 (A study on The Teaching Program of Communication on the Practical Using of Flipped Learning and The Strategic Text)

  • Communication is for making a passage to communicate with various modern narratives or various people. Therefore, it needs to be reorganized by these changes and demands. Especially in case of country students learning natural science and engineering are appreciating the necessity of speaking education. So a program which contains both speaking and writing should be organized. In this writing writer used flipped learning and strategic text to fulfill evaluation items that engineering authentication requires. Also writer suggested how to lecture and planned to make a integration textbook which can foster literacy and liberal arts knowledge.
