Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGWs) are a useful tool in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications that can benefit from built-in transduction, moderately large inspection ranges and high sensitivity to small flaws. This paper describes a SHM method based on UGWs, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and principal component analysis (PCA) able to detect and quantify the onset and propagation of fatigue cracks in structural waveguides. The method combines the advantages of guided wave signals processed through the DWT with the outcomes of selecting defect-sensitive features to perform a multivariate diagnosis of damage. This diagnosis is based on the PCA. The framework presented in this paper is applied to the detection of fatigue cracks in a steel beam. The probing hardware consists of a PXI platform that controls the generation and measurement of the ultrasonic signals by means of piezoelectric transducers made of Lead Zirconate Titanate. Although the approach is demonstrated in a beam test, it is argued that the proposed method is general and applicable to any structure that can sustain the propagation of UGWs.

To compute the mean and variance of component-based reliability software, we focused on path-based reliability analysis. System reliability depends on the transition probabilities of components within a system and reliability of the individual components as basic input parameters. The uncertainty in these parameters is estimated from the test data of the corresponding components and arises from the software architecture, failure behaviors, software growth models etc. Typically, researchers perform Monte Carlo simulations to study uncertainty. Thus, we considered a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation to calculate uncertainty, as it generates random samples through sequential methods. The MCMC approach determines the input parameters from the probability distribution, and then calculates the average approximate expectations for a reliability estimation. The comparison of different techniques for uncertainty analysis helps in selecting the most suitable technique based on data requirements and reliability measures related to the number of components.
Voice activity detectors (VAD) are important in wireless communication and speech signal processing, In the conventional VAD methods, an expression for the likelihood ratio test (LRT) based on statistical models is derived in discrete Fourier transform (DFT) domain, Then, speech or noise is decided by comparing the value of the expression with a threshold, This paper presents a new statistical VAD method based on a signal subspace approach, The probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA) is employed to obtain a signal subspace model that incorporates probabilistic model of noisy signal to the signal subspace method, The proposed approach provides a novel decision rule based on LRT in the signal subspace domain, Experimental results show that the proposed signal subspace model based VAD method outperforms those based on the widely used Gaussian distribution in DFT domain.
The accurate modeling of boundary conditions is important in simulations of the discrete element method (DEM) and can affect the numerical results significantly. In conventional triaxial compression (CTC) tests, the specimens are wrapped by flexible membranes allowing to deform freely. To accurately model the boundary conditions of CTC, new flexible boundary algorithms for 2D and 3D DEM simulations are proposed. The new algorithms are computationally efficient and easy to implement. Moreover, both horizontal and vertical component of confining pressure are considered in the 2D and 3D algorithms, which can ensure that the directions of confining pressure are always perpendicular to the specimen surfaces. Furthermore, the boundaries are continuous and closed in the new algorithms, which can prevent the escape of particles from the specimens. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is validated by biaxial and triaxial simulations of granular materials. The results show that the algorithms allow the boundaries to deform non-uniformly on the premise of maintaining high control accuracy of confining pressure. Meanwhile, the influences of different lateral boundary conditions on the numerical results are discussed. It is indicated that the flexible boundary is more appropriate for the models with large strain or significant localization than rigid boundary.
Dynamic textures are videos that exhibit a stationary property with respect to time (i.e., they have patterns that repeat themselves over a large number of frames). These patterns can easily be tracked by a linear dynamic system. In this paper, a model that identifies the underlying linear dynamic system using wavelet coefficients, rather than a raw sequence, is proposed. Content based threshold filtering based on Set Partitioning in a Hierarchical Tree (SPIHT) helps to get another representation of the same frames that only have low frequency components. The main idea of this paper is to apply SPIHT based threshold filtering on different bands of wavelet transform so as to have more significant information in fewer parameters for singular value decomposition (SVD). In this case, more flexibility is given for the component selection, as SVD is independently applied to the different bands of frames of a dynamic texture. To minimize the time complexity, the proposed model is implemented on a graphics processing unit (GPU). Test results show that the proposed dynamic system, along with a discrete wavelet and SPIHT, achieve a highly compact model with better visual quality, than the available LDS, Fourier descriptor model, and higher-order SVD (HOSVD).

We proposed a hopping phase estimator to demodulate the received signals without any hopping information in frequency hopping spread spectrum systems. The demodulation process in this paper is as follows: hopped frequency tracking is accomplished by choosing a frequency component with maximum amplitude after taking discrete Fourier transform and a hopping frequency estimator which estimates the phase generated by hopped frequency is established through difference product and down-sampling. We obtained the probability density function and variance performance of the proposed estimator and confirmed that the analysis and the simulation results were agreed with each other.

The wire rope of container crane is a important component to container transfer system and is used in a myriad of various applications such as elevator, mine hoist, construction machinery, and so on. If it happen wire rope failures in operating, it may lead to the safety accident and economic loss, which is productivity decline, competitive decline of container terminal, etc. To solve this problem, we developed the active and portable wire rope fault detecting system. The developed system consists of three parts that are the fault detecting, signal processing, and remote monitoring part. All detected signal has external noise or disturbance according to circumstances. Therefore we applied to discrete wavelet transform to extract a signal from noisy data that was used filter. As experimental result, we can reduce the expense for container terminal because of extension of exchange period of wire rope for container crane and this system is possible to apply in several fields to use wire rope.

Security administrators of companies and organizations need to come up with proper countermeasures against cyber-attacks considering infrastructures and security policies in their possession. In order to develop and verify such countermeasures, the administrators should be able to reenact both cyber-attacks and defenses. Simulations can be useful for the reenactment by overcoming its limitations including high risk and cost. If the administrators are able to design various scenarios of cyber-attacks and to develop simulation models from their viewpoints, they can simulate desired situations and observe the results more easily. It is challenging to simulate cyber-security issues, because there is lack of theoretical basis for modeling a wide range of the security field as well as pre-defined basic components used to model cyber-attacks. In this paper, we propose a modeling method for cyber-security simulations by developing a basic component and a composite model, called Abstracted Cyber-Security Unit Model (ACSUM) and Abstracted Cyber-security SIMulation model (ACSIM), respectively. The proposed models are based on DEVS(Discrete Event systems Specification) formalism, a modeling theory for discrete event simulations. We develop attack scenarios by sequencing attack behaviors using ACSUMs and then model ACSIMs by combining and abstracting the ACSUMs from a security perspective. The concepts of ACSUM and ACSIM enable the security administrators to simulate numerous cyber-security issues from their viewpoints. As a case study, we model a worm scenario using ACSUM and simulate three types of simulation models based on ACSIM from a different security perspective.

This paper proposes a new Fourier transform-based phasor estimation method to eliminate the adverse influence of the exponentially decaying dc offsets when Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is used to calculate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component in a relaying signal. By subtracting the result of odd-sample-set DFT from the result of even-sample-set DFT, the information of dc offsets can be obtained. Two dc offsets in a relaying signal are treated as one dc offset which is piecewise approximated in one cycle data window. The effect of the dc offsets can be eliminated by the approximated dc offset. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by using computer-simulated signals and EMTP-generated signals. The algorithm is also tested on a hardware board with TMS320C32 microprocessor. The evaluation results indicate that the proposed algorithm has the stable and accurate eliminating performance even if the input signal contains two decaying dc components having different time constants.
This paper presents a wavelet-fuzzy based controller for indirect field oriented control of three-phase induction motor drives. The discrete wavelet transform is used to decompose the error between the actual speed and the command speed of the induction motor drive into different frequency components. The transformed error coefficients along with the scaling gains are used for generating the control component of the motor. Self-tuning fuzzy logic is used for online tuning of the scaling gains of the controller. The proposed controller has the ability to meet the speed tracking requirements in the closed loop system. The complete indirect field oriented control scheme incorporating the proposed wavelet-fuzzy based controller is investigated theoretically and simulated under various dynamic operating conditions. The simulation results are compared with a conventional proportional integral controller and a fuzzy based controller. The speed control scheme incorporating the proposed controller is implemented in real time using a digital processor control board. Simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.
