  • In this study, overflow behaviors through a partially open tainter gate mounted on a standard ogee spillway were investigated by using the FLOW-3D. The results indicated that the discharge coefficient is in the range of 0.685 to 0.723. A relation of gate-controlled discharge to free discharge was proposed and a reasonable correlation between the free and controlled discharge was obtained. Pressures on the spillway crest and the gate were also investigated. As the gate opening rate decreases with a fixed gate opening height and the gate opening height increases at a fixed gate opening rate, negative pressures on the spillway crest and the dimensionless maximum pressures on the gate increase.

  • On the subject of Yeoungsan River Yeoungbon c and Seumjin River Seumbon e site discussing as the measuring points of discharge and Quality by the Department of Environment, this study executes the tests of proprieties and examines the methods of flow measuring and assessment. The result of this study may summarize as belows. According to the hydrogeomorphological aspects and artificial effects, Yeoungbon c and Seumbon e site are not proper for the measuring points of the water levels. Also, the methods of river discharge measuring by the specific discharge method, first tried in this study, has an enough reliability which can be used to measure the site where is difficult to measure the flow directly or to select the representative site to measure on the up and downstream. In case of accumulating the specific discharge data throughout the flow observation by seasons and periods for a long time, these may be used to measure the flow as well.

  • The method of mass flow rate measurement using a critical nozzle is well established in the flow satisfying ideal gas law. However, in the case of measuring high-pressure gas flow, the current method shows invalid discharge coefficient because the flow does not follow ideal gas law. Therefore an appropriate equation of state considering real gas effects should be applied into the method. The present computational study has been performed to give an understanding of the physics of a critical nozzle flow for high-pressure hydrogen gas and find a way for the exact mass flow prediction. The two-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are computed using a fully implicit finite volume method. The real gas effects are considered in the calculation of discharge coefficient as well as in the computation. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental data and predict well the measured mass flow rates. It has been found that the discharge coefficient for high-pressure hydrogen gas can be corrected properly adopting the real gas effects.

  • ADC(Automatic Discharge Connector) is commonly used for the easy maintenance of the submersible pumps. However, the small gap between the flange of the base plate and that of the pipe due to the head rise, the flow momentum change and the mis-installation makes leakage flow that may be a great loss to the pumping system. In this study, the performance degradation was predicted with the simple leakage flow model through the gap. The newly developed ADC was tested and the leakage performance was compared with the old one and also no-leakage piping system. The newly developed ADC reduced the leakage flow in a satisfactory way in comparison with the old model.

  • This paper presents the hydraulic analysis of the oxygen transfer through the air entrainment and the relationships between the efficiency of the oxygen transfer and the hydraulic parameters in the riparian riffles. Field survey on the pool-riffle formation of the river reach and the measurements of the oxygen transfer in the riffles were performed. Air entrainment occurred more frequently in the edged gravels rather than in the round and edgeless ones, and it was formed mainly from behind the trailing edges of the gravels. Oxygen transfer was found to be proportional to the flow velocity, the flow discharge, and the Froude number, but to be not closely related to the particle diameter. Average value of oxygen transfer in the riffles of study area was about 0.085, which shows good efficiency compared with results of smooth chute. Variation of the water level, which increases in proportion to the flow velocity and the flow discharge, seems to make the air entrainment more active, but has not been verified quantitatively. Relationships between the air entrainment and the variation of the water level must be considered in the further study.

  • It is very important to secure sufficient river maintenance flow for the ecosystem, since the ecosystem in the downstream section of the dam is greatly affected by the stream maintenance flow from the dam. However, the amount of discharge from the Seomjingang Dam is decreasing year by year, this study estimated the ecological flow required for the downstream section of the Seomjingang Dam, which is known as the habitat of the endangered Acheilognathus somjinensis, in order to secure the river flow of the Seomjingang Dam. For this purpose, the proper discharge was calculated using the PHABSIM model, which is a hydrological survey and physical habitat simulation method, and the proper discharge of other fish species were also comprehensively reviewed. As a result of this study, the current river maintenance flow at the Seomjingang Dam partially satisfies the ecological maintenance flow including the Acheilognathus somjinensis in the downstream section of the Seomjingang Dam. However, this is recognized as the minimum discharge to maintain the ecology in the downstream section of the Seomjingang Dam, and it would be more desirable to secure larger river maintenance flow than this. This study can contribute the determination of the river maintenance flow of the Seomjingang Dam by proposing the river maintenance flow considering the fish habitat environment in the river.

  • The influence of gas flow on the plasma generation in the atmospheric plasma jet is described with the theory of hydrodynamics. The plasma discharge is affected by the gas-flow streams with Reynolds number (Re) as well as the gas pressure with Bernoulli's theorem according to the gas flow rate inserted into the glass tube. The length of plasma column is varied with the flow types such as the laminar flow of Re<2,000 and the turbulent flow of Re>4,000 as it has been known in a general fluid experiments. In the laminar flow, the plasma column length is increased as the increase of flow rate. Since the pressure in the glass tube becomes low as the increase of flow velocity by the Bernoulli's theorem, the breakdown voltage of plasma discharge is reduced by the Paschen's law. Therefore, the plasma length is increased as the increasing flow rate with the fixed operation voltage. In the transition of laminar and turbulent flows, the plasma length is decreased. When the flow becomes turbulent as the flow rate is increasing, the plasma length becomes short and the discharge is shut down ultimately. In the discharge of laminar flow, the diameter of plasma beam exposed on the substrate surface is kept less than the glass diameter, since the gas flow is kept to the distinct distance from the nozzle of glass tube.

  • A fully coupled finite element analysis (FEA) technique was developed for analyzing the discharge phenomena and dielectric liquid flow while considering surface charge density effects in dielectric flow guidance. In addition, the simulated speed of surface charge propagation was compared and verified with the experimental results shown in the literature. Recently, electrohydrodynamics (EHD) techniques have been widely applied to enhance the cooling performance of electromagnetic systems by utilizing gaseous or liquid media. The main advantage of EHD techniques is the non-contact and low-noise nature of smart control using an electric field. In some cases, flow can be achieved using only a main electric field source. The driving sources in EHD flow are ionization in the breakdown region and ionic dissociation in the sub-breakdown region. Dielectric guidance can be used to enhance the speed of discharge propagation and fluidic flow along the direction of the electric field. To analyze this EHD phenomenon, in this study, the fully coupled FEA was composed of Poisson's equation for an electric field, charge continuity equations in the form of the Nernst-Planck equation for ions, and the Navier-Stokes equation for an incompressible fluidic flow. To develop a generalized numerical technique for various EHD phenomena that considers fluidic flow effects including dielectric flow guidance, we examined the surface charge accumulation on a dielectric surface and ionization, dissociation, and recombination effects.
