  • The hollow cathode discharge is a kind of plasma formation scheme in which plasma is formed inside a hollow structure, the cathode, with current to a nearby anode of arbitrary shape. In this scheme, electrons reflex radially within the hollow cathode, establishing an efficient ionization mechanism for gas within the cavity. An existence condition for the hollow cathode effect is that the electron mean-free-path for ionization is of the order of the cavity radius. Thus the size of this kind of plasma source must decrease as the gas pressure is increased. In fact, the hollow cathode effect can occur even at atmospheric pressure for cathode diameters of order 10-100 $\mu\textrm{m}$. That is, the "natural" operating pressure regime for a "micro hollow cathode discharge" is atmospheric pressure. This kind of plasma source has been the subject of increasing research activity in recent years. A number of geometric variants have been explored, and operational requirements and typical plasma parameters have been determined. Large arrays of individual tiny sources can be used to form large-area, atmospheric-pressure plasma sources. The simplicity of the method and the capability of operation without the need for the usual vacuum system and its associated limitations, provide a highly attractive option for new approaches to many different kinds of plasma applications, including plasma surface modification technologies. Here we review the background work that has been carried out in this new research field.

  • A $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ (LNCAO/C) active material composite cathode was coated with carbon. The conductive carbon coating was obtained by addition of surfactant during synthesis. The addition of surfactant led to the formation of an amorphous carbon coating layer on the pristine LNCAO surface. The layer of carbon coating was clearly detected by FE-TEM analysis. In electrochemical performance, although the LNCAO/C showed similar capacity at low C-rate conditions, the rate capability was improved by the form of the carbon coating at high current discharge state. After 40 cycles of charge-discharge processes, the capacity retention of LNCAO/C was better than that of LNCAO. The carbon coating is effectively protected the surface structure of the pristine LNCAO during Li insertion-extraction.

  • Nanocrystalline $LiFePO_4$ powders were prepared at 660-$670^{\circ}C$ in an Ar atmosphere using two different synthetic routes, solid-state and sol-gel. Both materials showed well-developed XRD patterns without any impurity peaks. Particles composed in the range of 200-300 nm from the solid-state method, and 50-100 nm from the sol-gel method, were confirmed through scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The $LiFePO_4$ obtained by the sol-gel method offered a high discharge capacity (153 mAh/g) and stable discharge behavior, even at elevated temperatures (50 and $60^{\circ}C$), whereas poor electrochemical performance was observed from the solid-state method. Rate capability studies for sol gel-derived $LiFePO_4$ ranged from 0.2 to 30 C, which revealed excellent retention over 70 cycles with a 99.9% capacity.

  • HID(high intensity discharge)lamps are high pressure mercury lamp, high pressure sodium lamp and metalhalide lamp. metalhalide lamp among these lamps has considered to be one of the most effective artificial light sources and this lamp has good efficiency, good color rendition and good focusing capability, But the shortcorning of metalhalide lamp is known as acoustic resonance phenomena in the discharge tube when lighted by electronic ballast and then acoustic resonance cause various problems such as the arc instability, light output fluctuations. In this paper, to reduce the acoustic resonence phenomena, the electronic ballast was designed by three methods for high frequency operation wish frequency-modulated sinusodial waves in acoustic resonance frequency band. These frequency-modulated methods are resonance frequency and resonance frequency, resonance frequency and non-resonance frequency non-resonance frequency and non-resonance frequency Experiment results could't show the Presence of acoustic resonance visually and it proved that the resonance-generating conditions can be avoided by continuously changing the two operating frequencies in acoustic resonance band (20.59kHz∼94.2kHz).

  • This paper suggests the method for estimating a partial discharge (PD) location using divide of the inside transformer as a grid. The PD location is found swiftly and economically compared with the typical method detecting a PD. The reason is that the location of PD is detected in the section. The estimation of PD location is trained using the Neural Network. JavaNNS(Java Neural Network Simulator) and SNNS(Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator) are used for searching the location of PD. The simulation procedure is following, The transformer is assumed that the case is a regular hexahedron. The sensor is installed in a proper location. A section of PD location is set as a target, and training set is studied with several PD locations in the inside of the transformer. As a result of training process, the learning capability of neural network is excellent. The PD location is detected by division of internal structure of transformer and application of neural network.

  • The high theoretical energy density ($2600Wh\;kg^{-1}$) of Lithium-sulfur batteries and the high theoretical capacity of elemental sulfur ($1672mAh\;g^{-1}$) attract significant research attention. However, the poor electrical conductivity of sulfur and the polysulfide shuttle effect are chronic problems resulting in low sulfur utilization and poor cycling stability. In this study, we address these problems by coating a polyethylene separator with a layer of activated carbon powder. A lithium-sulfur cell containing the activated carbon powder-coated separator exhibits an initial specific discharge capacity of $1400mAh\;g^{-1}$ at 0.1 C, and retains 63% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, whereas the equivalent cell with a bare separator exhibits a $1200mAh\;g^{-1}$ initial specific discharge capacity, and 50% capacity retention under the same conditions. The activated carbon powder-coated separator also enhances the rate capability. These results indicate that the microstructure of the activated carbon powder layer provides space for the sulfur redox reaction and facilitates fast electron transport. Concurrently, the activated carbon powder layer traps and reutilizes any polysulfides dissolved in the electrolyte. The approach presented here provides insights for overcoming the problems associated with lithium-sulfur batteries and promoting their practical use.

  • The assembly of the micron-sized Si/CNT/carbon composite wrapped with graphene (SCG composite) is designed and synthesized via a spray drying process. The spherical SCG composite exhibits a high discharge capacity of 1789 mAh g-1 with an initial coulombic efficiency of 84 %. Moreover, the porous architecture of SCG composite is beneficial for enhancing cycling stability and rate capability. In practice, a blended electrode consisting of spherical SCG composite and natural graphite with a reversible capacity of ~500 mAh g-1, shows a stable cycle performance with high cycling efficiencies (> 99.5%) during 100 cycles. These superior electrochemical performance are mainly attributed to the robust design and structural stability of the SCG composite during charge and discharge process. It appears that despite the fracture of micro-sized Si particles during repeated cycling, the electrical contact of Si particles can be maintained within the SCG composite by suppressing the direct contact of Si particles with electrolytes.

  • Various kinds of metals were coated on synthetic graphite in order to investigate the relationship between film characteristics and their electrochemical performance. Gas suspension spray coating method was employed for the coating of synthetic graphite. In our experimental range, all of the metal coated synthetic graphite showed the higher capacity than that of raw material at high C-rate mainly due to decrease in impedance of passivation film. In cyclic voltammetry experiments, silver-coated and tin-coated graphite anodes found the lithium-alloy reaction. Considering smaller amount of metal coating, the most increase in discharge capacity was caused by improvement of conductivity of the electrode. When single-component metal was coated, silver-coated graphite anode exhibited the highest discharge capacity and better cycleability. Double components of silver-nickel coated active material showed the highest discharge capacity, rate capability and the best cycle performance in the range of our experiments.

  • A battery based on the lithium/elemental sulfur redox couple has the advantage of high theoretical specific capacity of 1,675 mAh/g-sulfur. However, Li/S battery has bad cyclic durability at room temperature due to sulfur active material loss resulting from lithium polysulfide dissolution. To improve the cycle life of Li/S battery, PEGDME (Poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether) 500 containing 1M LiTFSI salt which has high viscosity was used as electrolyte to retard the polysulfide dissolution and nano-sized $Mg_{0.6}Ni_{0.4}O$ was added to sulfur cathode as additive to adsorb soluble polysulfide within sulfur cathode. From experimental results, the improvement of the capacity and cycle life of Li/S battery was observed( maximum discharge capacity : 1,185 mAh/g-sulfur, C50/C1 = 85 % ). Through the charge-discharge test, we knew that PEGDME 500 played a role of preventing incomplete charge-discharge $behavior^{1,2)$. And then, in sulfur dissolution analysis and rate capability test, we first confirmed that nano-sized $Mg_{0.6}Ni_{0.4}O$ had polysulfide adsorbing effect and catalytic effect of promoting the Li/S redox reaction. In addition, from BET surface area analysis, we also verified that it played the part of increasing the porosity of sulfur cathode.

  • A rational management of water resources in estuary reservoirs necessiates the prediction of water quality. In this study, a multiple box model for the water quality prediction was developed as a tool for the purpose of examining an adequate way to improve and maintain the water quality. Some submodels that are suitable for simulating the mixing behavior of pollutant materials in a lake were considered in this model. The model was appiled for predicting water qualities of Haenam Esturay Reservoir. The result from this study can be summarized as follows : 1.A water quality simulation model that can predict the 10-day mean value of water qualities was developed by adding some submodels that simulate the concentrations of chlorophyll-a, BOD, T-P and T-N to the existing Multiple Box Model representing the mixing and circulating of materials by the hydarulic action. 2.As input data for the model developed, the climatic data including precipitation, solar radiation, temperature, cloudness, wind speed and relative humidity, and the water buget records including the pumping discharge and the releasing discharge by drainage gate were ollected. The hydrologic data for the inflow discharge from the watershed was obtained by simulation with the aid of USDAUL-74/SNUA watershed model. Also the water quality data were measured at streams and the reservoir. 3.As a result of calibration and verification test by using four comonents of water quality such as Chlorophyll-a, BOD, T-P and T-N, it was found that the correlation coefficeints between the observed and the simulated water qualities showed greater than 0.6, therefore the capability of the model to simulate the water quality was proved. 4.The result based on the model application showed that the water quality of the Haenam Estuary Reservoir varies seasonally with the harmonic trend, however the water quality is good in winter and get worse in summer. Also it may be concluded that the current grarde of water quality in the Heanam Esutary Reservoir is ranked as grade 4 suitable only for the agricultutal use.
