The brake disc materials for railway vehicle have been mainly used cast-iron. The brake disc and pad should be light, resist to a thermal crack and absorb enough friction energy. In order to satisfy this requirement, aluminum alloy brake disc for railway vehicle has been newly developed. The aluminum itself has not been considered the friction material for railway vehicle. However, in the case of aluminum composite with dispersed ceramic particles, friction characteristics, resistance to wear and heat are much improved. In the present study, aluminum composite brake disc of 20% ceramic particle and three kinds of organic pads have been tested in dynamometer. The results show that Al MMC brake disc and pad have good friction coefficient and wear rate, and thermal cracks in brake disc have not been initiated. Also, the Al MMC brake disc can be applied to railway vehicle of 150 km/h.
In this study, experimental and theoretical methods were applied to understand brake squeal noise VVVF rolling stock on tracks. Trailer cars needed to payed a particular attention, because they were the major source of brake noise. VVVF rolling stocks for lines no 1 of the subway system in Seoul were used for experimental analyses. In order to study brake squeal noise, a dynamometer test at the S&T Brake, Co., which was a manufacturer of brake pads had performed. For measuring vibration and noise, vibration tests of brake parts (brake lining, brake lining head, back plates, etc.) at the SNUT were executed. Also, vibration tests of disc assembly and lining block at the heavy maintenance shop of the Gunja depot were performed. The modal analyses by using an ANSYS which was one of the CAE commercial program were simulated to know the relationship to the mechanism of brake noise. On the based of the tests and the simulations it was found that specific frequencies of the brake parts affected squeal noise, and improvements for reducing squeal noise were proposed.

This study is to develop a Fe-based disc brake tinning with sponge structure for passenger car of 150km/h train and to concept design with 3 groove type for brake disc reducing hot hair-crack and certainly friction coeifficient. The developping brake linning would be to presumption of thermal stress Max.5.53k9/m0 of the 3 groove type. and It is stable friction coeifficient and wear rate on the Full Scale Brake dynamometer. So 3 groove type must be reduced to hot stress between Brake disc and Linning and Friction temperature is reduced about 20$^{\circ}C$

Friction materials for brake linings and clutches have severe performance requirements. The principal function of such frictional elements is to convert kinetic energy to heat, and then either to absorb or to dissipate heat. In order to achieve these objectives, the coefficient of friction must be as high as possible, independent of variations in operating conditions, and the necessary energy conversion must be accomplished with a minimum of wear on the contacting parts. In this study, Al powder, Al bronze powder and Mo powder used in general for automobile brake was sprayed on automobile brake disc to restrain rust and to maintain friction performance. Dynamo and corrosion tests have been carried out. It is concluded that the sprayed disc with Al bronze powder has the most improved frictional performance and anti-corrosive characteristics. The main results obtained can be summarized as follows; 1. From the corrosion current density test for gray cast iron and sprayed disc with powders of Al, Al bronze and Mo, it was cleared that the spray treatment with Al bronze powder showed the most superior anti-corrosive characteristics than other powders. 2. By anode polarization toward the noble direction from corrosion potential, corrosion current density with sprayed brake disc by Al-bronze powder was the lowest. 3. Mean frictional coefficients obtained from dynamo test are as follows : the sprayed disc with Al(99.99%) powder was 0.190 ; the sprayed disc with Al-bronze powder was 0.312 ; the sprayed disc with Mo powder was 0.257 ; the non-sprayed disc of gray cast iron was 0.331. In the case of the sprayed disc Al-bronze powder showed the most excellent frictional characteristics . 4. Amount of burnish quantity obtained from burnish test by dynamometer is as follows : the sprayed disc with Al-powder was 1.079 mm : the sprayed disc with Al-bronze powder was 0.155 mm : the sprayed disc with Mo powder was 0.253 mm : the non-sprayed disc of gray cast iron was 0.241 mm. Al-bronze powder also showed the most excellent burnish characteristics.

In order to facilitate technical exchange among nations and/or institutes through the establishment of mutual recognition and the reliability guarantee of testing results by testing standards standardization, the interlaboratory comparison tests on brake discs and linings between KRRI and CARS were conducted. So far, two ways of comparison tests were performed for a better understanding of mutual recognition and standardization in railroad brake linings between Korea and China. In this paper, the first and second comparison testing results have been summarized, and the suggestions for the future research work are also presented to encourage extensive research on comparison study of railroad brake discs and linings between KRRI and CARS. Eventually, the final goal of the current research will be the establishment of standardization of railroad testing standards.
In this study, a simulation analysis on the drum itself and the brake was examined. And the analysis results were obtained by investigating the thermal analysis results and the durability through structural analysis. Through the thermal stress and structural analyses on the lining under the force due to the brake cylinder, the drum inside under the force due to the expansion of the lining and the drum under the force due to the rotation of the axis, it was confirmed at which part the amounts of equivalent stress and deformation became large. If applied to the brake disc design by combining the results of this study, it is considered to be large utilization at increasing the prevention against the thermal deformation and its durability. The results of this study can be usefully applied to the durability design that can withstand the thermal stress in the drum brake. By applying the durability analysis at the seam of railroad track by season, this investigation result is seen to be favorable as the convergent research applied to the aesthetic design.
A paper facirig, used for clutch disc or brake lining of the vehicles, is consisted of a combination of cellulose fiber of pulp with assorted filler and friction imparting particles, impregnated with a thermo-setting resin. In this study, as a substitution for the paper-production method, the molding-production method was attempted to produce the paper facings, and their frictional characteristics were investigated. According to the experimental results, it was estimated that the paper facings added with silica (SiO$_2$) have superior frictional characteristics, which is mused by the porosity and Mobs' hardness of the silica (SiO$_2$).

This paper is a study on squeal noise simulation under the consideration of temperature and pressure dependent material properties of friction material. For this, data of pressure and temperature dependent material properties of lining is achieved by using lining data base and exponential curve fit. Complex eigenvalue analysis is performed for predicting squeal noise frequency and instability and chassis dynamo test is performed for achieving squeal noise frequency, sound pressure level, occurrence temperature & pressure. Initial multi models are composed for considering complex interface conditions such as pad ear-clip, piston-housing and guide pin-torque member. The simulation result of base models is compared with the test result. Squeal noise simulation under the consideration of temperature and pressure dependent material properties of friction material is performed and analyzed using multi models. And additional condition is disc material property variation. Entire simulation conditions are combined and analyzed. Finally, this paper proposes direction of the warm squeal noise model.

The brakes employed on commercial vehicles must be able to withstand three types of demanding services which are use-emergency stops from high speed, many repeated stops as in a delivery or bus route, and speed control in mountain descents. Two type of friction brakes are in use ; drum breaks and disc brakes. Drum brakes are of the internally expanding type in which two shoes fitted externally with friction material are forced outward against the inside of a rotating drum on the wheel unit. In this case, the Braking power is produced by the friction force between a drum and a lining, and is converted into heat. In this research an unsteady state heat transfer analysis for drum brake system of heavy truck has been performed by ABAQUS/standard code in the case of single-braking and the repeated braking condition. The temperature histories obtained by the finite Element analysis have been compared with the result calculated by the simplified formulation and the result obtained by the experiment of real vehicle conditions.
