The axis of rotation in biomechanics is a major tool to investigate joint function; therefore, many methods to estimate the axis of rotation have been developed. However, there exist several problems to describe, estimate, and test the axis statistically. The axis is directional data(axial data) and it should not be analyzed with traditional statistics. A proper comparative method should be considered to compare axis estimating methods for the same given data ANOVA (analysis of variance) is a frequently used statistical method to compare treatment means in experimental designs. In case of the axial data response assumed to come from Watson distribution, there are a few ANOVA method options. This study constructed ANOVA models for within-subjects designs of axial data. Two models (one within-subjects factor and two within-subjects factors crossed design) were considered. The empirical data used in this study were instantaneous axes of rotation of flexion/extension at the knee joint and the flexion/extension and pronation/supination at the elbow joint. The results of this study can be further applied to the various analysis of experimental designs.

BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function) is critical in realistic simulation of material appearances since it models the directional characteristics of reflection of light. Although many BRDF models have been proposed so far, it is still not easy to find one specific model that could represent all the reflection properties of real materials such as generalized diffusion, off-specular reflection, Fresnel effect, and back scattering. In this paper, we compare three BRDF models including B-spline volume BRDF (BVB), Cook-Torrance, and Lafortune in their ability to represent the measured BRDF data for physically-based rendering. We show that B-spline volume BRDF surpass the others in quality of data fitting and rendering, especially for materials without specular reflections.
Albedo is one of the critical parameters for understanding global climate change and energy/water balance. In this study, we used red and NIR reflectance from Satellite Pour I'Obervation de la Terre (SPOT)/Vegetation (VGT) S1 product. The product is preprocessed for users that they are atmospherically corrected using Simple Method Atmospheric Correction (SMAC) by Vision on Technology (VITO) for calculating broadband albedo. Roujean's Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model is a semi-empirical method used for BRDF angular integration and inversion. Each kernel of Roujean's model was multi integrated by angle components (i.e., viewing zenith, solar zenith, and relative azimuth angle). Black-sky hemispherical function is integrated by observational angle; whereas, white-sky hemispherical efficient is integrated by incident angle. Estimated spectral albedo of red ($0.61{\sim}0.68{\mu}m$, B2) and near infrared ($0.79{\sim}0.89{\mu}m$, B3) have a good agreement with MODIS albedo products.
Topology optimization of structures seeking the best distribution of mass in a design space to improve the structural performance and reduce the weight of a structure is one of the most comprehensive issues in the field of structural optimization. In addition to structures stiffness as the most common objective function, frequency optimization is of great importance in variety of applications too. In this paper, an efficient multi-objective Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method is developed for topology optimization of frequency and stiffness in continuum structures simultaneously. A software package including a Matlab code and Abaqus FE solver has been created for the numerical implementation of multi-objective BESO utilizing the weighted function method. At the same time, by considering the weaknesses of the optimized structure in single-objective optimizations for stiffness or frequency problems, slight modifications have been done on the numerical algorithm of developed multi-objective BESO in order to overcome challenges due to artificial localized modes, checker boarding and geometrical symmetry constraint during the progressive iterations of optimization. Numerical results show that the proposed Multiobjective BESO method is efficient and optimal solutions can be obtained for continuum structures based on an existent finite element model of the structures.

In this study, a new method for canceling MRI artifacts through the motion translation of image plane is presented Breathing often makes problems in a clinical diagnosis. Assuming that the head moves up and down due to breathing, rigid translational motions in only y(phase encoding axis) direction are treated Unlike the conventional Iterative phase retrieval algorithm, this method is based on the MRI imaging process and analyzing of Image property A new constraint condition with which the motion component and the true image component in the MRI signal can be separated by a simple algebraic operation is extracted After the x(read out) directional Fourier transformation of MRI signal is done, the y(phase encoding) directional spectrum phasing value is Just an algebraic sum of the Image component and the motion component Meanwhile, as It is known that the density of subcutaneous fat area is almost uniform in the head tomographs, the density distribution along a y directional line on this fat area is regarded as symmetric shape If the density function is symmetric, then the phase of spectrum changes linearly with the position Hence, the departure component from the linear function can be separated as the motion component Based on this constrant condition, the new method of artifact cancellation is presented Finally, the effectiveness of this algorithm IS shown by using a phantom with simulated motions.

Some statistical characteristics of deepwater waves along the Korean coast have been investigated using various sources of wave measurement and hindcasting data. For very large waves comparable to design waves, it is recommended to use the average value of the empirical formulas proposed by Shore Protection Manual in 1977 and by Goda in 2003 for the relation between significant wave height and period. The standard deviation of significant wave periods non-dimensionalized with respect to the mean value for a certain significant wave height varies between 0.04 and 0.21 with a typical value of 0.1 depending upon different regions and different ranges of significant wave heights. The mean and standard deviation of the principal deepwater wave direction are presented at the 106 coastal grid points along the Korean coast. For relatively large waves, the probability density function of the directional spreading parameter $s_{max}$ is expressed as a lognormal distribution. The most suitable frequency spectrum in the Korean coast is the TMA spectrum. The probability density function of the peak enhancement factor $\gamma$ is also expressed as a lognormal distribution, with its mean value of 2.94, which is close to the value in the North Sea.
The effects of directional fracture tensor components and first invariant of fracture tensor on deformation moduli and shear moduli of fractured rock masses is analyzed based on regression analysis performed between 3-D fracture tensor parameters and deformability of DFN blocks. Using one or two deterministic joint sets, a total of 224 3-D discrete fracture network (DFN) cube blocks were generated with various configurations of deterministic density and probabilistic size distribution. The fracture tensor parameters were calculated for each generated DFN systems. Also, deformability moduli with respect to three perpendicular direction of the DFN cube blocks were estimated based on distinct element method. The larger the first invariant of fracture tensor, the smaller the values for the deformability moduli of the DFN blocks. These deformability properties present an asymptotic pattern above the certain threshold. It is found that power-law function describes the relationship between the directional deformability moduli and the corresponding fracture tensor components estimated in same direction.
The optical performance of LLF(Lenticular Lens Film)-based backlight was studied by using optical simulation as functions of the aspect ratio and the refractive index of lenticular lenses. In order to perform reliable simulation, the BSDF(bi-directional scattering distribution function) of the scattering dots on the bottom surface of the light guide plate was obtained as a superposition of the Lambertian and the elliptic Gaussian distribution components by comparing the experimental results and the simulation for the luminance distribution on the light guide. Based on this approach, an appropriate BSDF of the scattering dots of the light guide was constructed. The resultant values of the optimized aspect ratio and the refractive were found to be 1.25 and 1.65, respectively. In spite of the hybrid aspects of LLF incorporating both diffusing and collimating functions, the optical performance, in particular the on-axis luminance of LLF-based backlight was inferior by about 20% compared to that of conventional backlights adopting one prism film. However, the combination of two lenticular lens films resulted in comparable luminance gain as well as smooth decrease in the luminance with the viewing angle without exhibiting any side lobes.
Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are fibrous form of activated carbon (AC) with higher mechanical strength and flexibility, which make them suitable for building modules for applications including directional gas flow such as air and gas purification. Similarly, ACFs are anticipated to excel in the efficient capture of CO2. However, due to the difficulties in fabricating monofilament carbon fibers at a laboratory scale, most of the studies regarding ACFs for CO2 capture have relied on electrospun carbon fibers. In this study, we fabricated monofilament carbon fibers from PAN-based monofilament precursors by stabilization and carbonization. Then, ACFs were successfully prepared by chemical activation using KOH. Different weight ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1:4 were employed in the fabrication of ACFs, and the samples were designated as ACF-1 to ACF-4, respectively. As a function of KOH ratio, increase in surface area could be observed. However, the CO2 adsorption trend did not follow the surface area trend, and the ACF-3 with second largest surface area exhibited the highest CO2 adsorption capacity. To understand the phenomena, nitrogen content and ultramicropore distribution, which are important factors determining CO2 adsorption capacity, were considered. As a result, while nitrogen content could not explain the phenomena, ultramicropore distribution could provide a reasoning that the excessive etching led ACF-4 to develop micropore structure with a broader distribution, resulting in high surface area yet deteriorated CO2 adsorption.
The mathematical processing (unfolding) of pulse height spectra from a scintillation detector helps to calculate the photon fluence rate energy distribution in a measured photon field. The data processing is based on the knowledge of detection system response function and directional dependence respectively. The experimental results of the photon fields measurements in the vicinity of the spent fuel temporary storage and inside the storage hall are presented. The containers Castor 440 are used for temporary storing of the burnt up fuel assemblies in the Czech nuclear power plant Dukovany. A set of periodical measurements was performed in order to get basic information on the time dependence of the photon fields spatial distributions and spectral characteristics in the temporary storage hall and its vicinity. The photon fields were measured by the scintillation system. The obtained photon fields spatial distributions and spectral characteristics present the information on the radiation hazard in the storage.
