This paper discusses how steel cord and PVA hybrid fibers enhance the performance of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HPRFCC) in terms of elastic limit, strain hardening response and post peak of the composites. The effect of microfiber(PVA) blending ratio is presented. For this purpose flexure, direct tension and split tension tests were conducted. It was found that HFRCC specimen shows multiple cracking in the area subjected to the greatest bending tensile stress. Uniaxial tensile test confirms the range of tensile strain capacity from 0.5 to $1.5\%$ when hybrid fiber is used. The cyclic loading test results identified a unique unloading and reloading response for this ductile composite. Cyclic loading in tension appears not to affect the tensile response of the material if the uniaxial compressive strength during loading is not exceeded.
Deformability of RC members in shear is controlled by governing failure modes and material strength. Shear strength of members in D-regions has been explained by a direct load path (direct strut or arch action) and indirect load path (fan action or truss action). Indirect load path including truss action and fan action rely on bond along tension ties. Generally, superposition of two actions results in total shear strength when shear failure modes control. The ultimate deformation depends on controlling failure modes and thereby, their force transfer patterns. Proposed models are capable of explaining of limited deformability of RC members in D-regions.

The Brazilian test has been widely used to determine the indirect tensile strength of rock, concrete and other brittle materials. The basic assumption for the calculation formula of Brazilian tensile strength is that the elastic moduli of rock are the same both in tension and compression. However, the fact is that the elastic moduli in tension and compression of most rocks are different. Thus, the formula of Brazilian tensile strength under the assumption of isotropy is unreasonable. In the present study, we conducted Brazilian tests on flat disk-shaped rock specimens and attached strain gauges at the center of the disc to measure the strains of rock. A tension-compression bi-modular model is proposed to interpret the data of the Brazilian test. The relations between the principal strains, principal stresses and the ratio of the compressive modulus to tensile modulus at the disc center are established. Thus, the tensile and compressive moduli as well as the correct tensile strength can be estimated simultaneously by the new formulas. It is found that the tensile and compressive moduli obtained using these formulas were in well agreement with the values obtained from the direct tension and compression tests. The formulas deduced from the Brazilian test based on the assumption of isotropy overestimated the tensile strength and tensile modulus and underestimated the compressive modulus. This work provides a new methodology to estimate tensile strength and moduli of rock simultaneously considering tension-compression bi-modularity.
In this paper, mode I fracture toughness of rock was determined by direct and indirect methods using Particle Flow Code simulation. Direct methods are compaction tension (CT) test and hollow centre cracked quadratic sample (HCCQS). Indirect methods are notched Brazilian disk (NBD) specimen, the semi-circular bend (SCB) specimen, hollow centre cracked disc (HCCD), the single edge-notched round bar in bending (SENRBB) specimen and edge notched disk (END). It was determined that which one of indirect fracture toughness values is close to direct one. For this purpose, initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, the simulated models in five introduced indirect tests were cross checked with the results from direct tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Mode I fracture toughness of rock in direct test was less than other tests results. Fracture toughness resulted from semi-circular bend specimen test was close to direct test results. Therefore semi-circular bend specimen can be a proper test for determination of Mode I fracture toughness of rock in absence of direct test.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the relative effects of specific gravity and particle size on internal bond and tensile strengths and fracture toughness of particleboard and to compare mechanical strength with fracture toughness. The particleboard was manufactured with three different particle sizes at specific gravity levels of 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8 with a resin content of 10% based on oven dry weight. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Internal bond strength. fracture toughness in internal bond test. maximum tensile strength, and fracture toughness in tension test increased with the increase of specific gravity of particleboard. 2. As partcle size increased, internal bond strength, fracture toughness. maximum tensile strength. and fracture toughness in tension test increased. 3. The maximum tensile strength and fracture toughness appeared to be in a direct relationship, and then maximum tensile strength could be used for predicition of fracture toughness for tension test. 4. The fracture toughness in internal bond test was somewhat independent on induced crack length.
This paper presents the test results of total 35 direct tensile specimens to investigate the effect of high-strength concrete on the tension stiffening effect in axially loaded reinforced concrete tensile members. Three kinds of concrete strength 25, 60, and 80 MPa were included as a major experimental parameter together with six concrete cover thickness ratios. The results showed that as higher strength concrete was employed, not only more extensive split cracking along the reinforcement was formed, but also the transverse crack space became smaller. Thereby, the effective tensile stiffness of the high-strength concrete specimens at the stabilized cracking stage was much smaller than those of normal-strength concrete specimens. This observation is contrary to the current design provisions, and the significance in reduction of tension stiffening effect by employment of high-strength concrete is much higher than that would be expected. Based on the present results, a modification factor is proposed for accounting the effect of the cover thickness and the concrete strength.
The investigation of corrosion effects on the tensile behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members is very important in region prone to high corrosion conditions. In this article, an experimental study concerning corrosion effects on tensile behavior of RC members is presented. For this purpose, a comprehensive experimental program including 58 cylindrical reinforced concrete specimens under various levels of corrosion is conducted. Some of the specimens (44) are located in large tub containing water and salt (5% salt solution); an electrical supplier has been utilized for the accelerated corrosion program. Afterwards, the tensile behavior of the specimens was studied by means of the direct tension tests. For each specimen, the tension stiffening curve is plotted, and their behavior at various load levels is investigated. Average crack spacing, loss of cross-section area due to corrosion, the concrete contribution to the tensile response for different strain levels, and maximum bond stress developed at each corrosion level are studied, and their appropriate relationships are proposed. The main parameters considered in this investigation are: degree of corrosion ($C_w$), reinforcement diameter (d), reinforcement ratio (${\rho}$), clear concrete cover (c), ratio of clear concrete cover to rebar diameter (c/d), and ratio of rebar diameter to reinforcement percentage ($d/{\rho}$).
Al-Si junctions were made by vacuum deposition of aluminium on to silicon wafers and examined by TEM. The uneven interfaces of the junctions are formed due to the surface tension of the molten solution resulting in preferential dissolution of silicon in aluminium at some areas. These undesirable uneven interfaces affect the junction shape and so the over-all characteristics of the devices.
