A Comparison of Standardization Methods in Near-infrared Analysis

  • A variety of standardization methods between two near-infrared (NIR) spectrometers were investigated for the prediction of five constituents in trans-alkylation process. Spectra were collected by two different instruments (one is regarded as mater instrument, other on as slave instrument). Three well-known standardization methods of direct standardization (DS), piecewise direct standardization (PDS) and slope/bias correction of response variable were applied to trans-alkylation samples on the slave instrument. We have examined for a set of reliable standardization samples using smaller number of transfer samples in order to increase efficiency of standardization.

Determinants of International Standardization: An Empirical Analysis in the ICT field (ICT 국제표준화 결정요인에 관한 실증분석 연구)

  • This study is an attempt to identify factors determining the success of international standardization and understand the relationship between the factors, such as government-driven standardization activities. Six factors were identified through factor analysis; namely, 'Direct government support', 'Indirect government support', 'Utilization of standardization bodies', 'Standardization strategy', 'Attainment of a dominant market power', and 'Adoption as an international standard.' The results showed that firstly, support from the government, whether direct or indirect, had no direct effect on the outcome of international standardization efforts, but produced an indirect influence on it through mediating factors such as the attainment of a dominant market power. Secondly, the attainment of a dominant market power proved to be the most important success factor of international standardization, suggesting that the government must direct its efforts to help boost the market power of target standards through measures like promoting a timely market entry and the development of high-quality standards, in a manner to induce market satisfaction, increasing lock-in effects and building a quasi-vertical integration system. Thirdly, direct support from the government holds the key to the success of international standardization with de jure standardization bodies, while the strategic use of standardization bodies appears the most important for the positive outcome of standardization concerning de facto standardization bodies.

  • After its introduction in Korea, nail art is becoming active, especially among women in their 20s and 30s who are interested in fashion and beauty. Although self-nail tips are available online in various designs for each brand that is currently on the market, these designs and sizes of self-nail tips on the market are different for each age group. Since the design or size is not suggested for the different situations, there are difficulties in purchasing products that match the shape and size of nails of consumers. In this study, frequency analysis was performed using 'SPSS statistics 21.0 for windows program' to analyze data obtained by direct measurement method and 3D scanner measurement method for Korean women in their 20s. For comparative analysis between direct and 3D scanner measurements, a corresponding sample, 'T-test', was performed. As a result, we proposed the standardization of nail tip size after comparative analysis between direct measurement and 3D scanner measurement. Previous studies have been proceeding with direct measurement method. However, this study introduced a 3D scanner measurement method in the nail field and attempted the standardization of nail size by age group of Korean women. Importantly, this sutdy suggests standardization of nail tip size among missing body sizes.

The Effects of Requirement Uncertainty, Control Standardization, Interactions on Software Quality (요구사항 불확실성, 통제 표준화, 상호작용이 소프트웨어 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Risk management or risk-based approach of software project management was developed to explain the effects of requirement uncertainty, control standardization, interactions on software quality. Based on a prior theory, five hypotheses were derived and empirically tested using a survey design. Data from 117 members in 3 SI companies support for the path model, and three of five hypotheses. The results showed that decreases in requirement uncertainty and increases in control standardization were directly associated with increases in the interactions between user and project teams, which, in turn, led to increases software quality. The findings suggested that the direct effect on software quality is primarily due to the interactions between user and project teams, rather than requirement uncertainty and control standardization.

  • Superconducting sensors and detectors have been applied to many fields or beginning to enter the maturing stage. The applications spread over a wide range of fields such as radio telescope, medical examination, quantum information, contamination inspection, materials analysis, etc. For users of the superconducting devices as well as developers, we have to avoid confusion of naming, graphical circuit symbols, and measurement methods for device performance. We are trying to formulate international standards under the International Electrotechnical Commission - Technical Committee 90 (IEC-TC90), which is responsible for superconductivity. The sensors and detectors to be considered are divided into two groups: coherent sensors (SQUID, SIS mixers, etc.) and direct detectors (TES, STJ, MKID, SSPD, etc.).

  • Recently, LVDC(Low Voltage Direct Current) has been came into the newly spotlight with HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) and as increasing digital load, DC power supply and high quality of demand is also getting extended. In accordance with the report of EPRI(Electric Power Research Institute), they expect digital load will grow to 50% of whole load in 2020. Subsequently, the use of DC equipment will grow dramatically. Therefore, the careful adoption of LVDC standardization policy is urgently required for the safety of people, prevention of confusion and occupancy of the market.

  • The transfer of predictive models using various chemometric techniques has been reported for FTNIR and scanning-grating based NIR instruments with respect relatively dry samples (<10% water). Some of the currently used transfer techniques include slope and bias correction (SBC), direct standardization (DS), piecewise direct standardization (PDS), orthogonal signal correction (OSC), finite impulse transform (FIR) and wavelet transform (WT) and application of neural networks. In a previous study (Greensill et at., 2001) on calibration transfer for wet samples (intact melons) across silicon diode array instrumentation, we reported on the performance of various techniques (SBC, DS, PDS, double window PDS (DWPDS), OSC, FIR, WT, a simple photometric response correction and wavelength interpolative method and a model updating method) in terms of RMSEP and Fearns criterion for comparison of RMSEP. In the current study, we compare these melon transfer results to a similar study employing pairs of spectrometers for non-invasive prediction of soluble solid content of peaches.

Evidence for a decelerating cosmic expansion from supernova cosmology

  • Supernova (SN) cosmology is based on the assumption that the width-luminosity relation (WLR) in the type Ia SN luminosity standardization would not vary with progenitor age. Unlike this expectation, recent age datings of stellar populations in host galaxies have shown significant correlations between progenitor age and Hubble residual (HR). It was not clear, however, how this correlation arises from the SN luminosity standardization process, and how this would impact the cosmological result. Here we show that this correlation originates from a strong progenitor age dependence of the WLR and color-luminosity relation (CLR), in the sense that SNe from younger progenitors are fainter each at given light-curve parameters x1 and c. This is reminiscent of Baade's discovery of two Cepheid period-luminosity relations, and, as such, causes a serious systematic bias with redshift in SN cosmology. We illustrate that the differences between the high-z and low-z SNe in the WLR and CLR, and in HR after the standardization, are fully comparable to those between the correspondingly young and old SNe at intermediate redshift, indicating that the observed dimming of SNe with redshift is most likely an artifact of over-correction in the luminosity standardization. When this systematic bias with redshift is properly taken into account, there is no evidence left for an accelerating universe, and the SN data now support a decelerating cosmic expansion. Since the SN cosmology has long been considered as the most direct evidence for an accelerating universe with dark energy, this finding poses a serious question to one of the cornerstones of the concordance model.

  • A various multimedia application services should be developed with techniques of high speed networks and computer. Among these, video-conference system over Internet is useful and important, and the standardization for it should be showed in ITU-T H.323. H.323 standardization consists of four components such as Terminal, MCU(Multipoint Control Unit), Gatekeeper, and Gateway. Among these, the functions of Gatekeeper are as follows, firstly the address translation service to translate the alias address into the IP address, secondary conference admission control service to control of conference start and termination, thirdly bandwidth management service for H.323 terminals. In this paper, we implemented the Gatekeeper for an efficient management of video-conference components in Internet environment, and will introduce our system. As the experimental results with CUSeeMe and Netmeeting which are well-known H.323 terminal, it is known that our gatekeeper should be satisfied with H.323 standardization.

  • As the spread of DC power distribution systems increases, the occurrence of failures and fire accidents are also increasing. In particular, the ESS fire accident, which is a component of the smart grid, and the fire accident of the solar power system, which is a direct current system, are caused by problems in the electrical connection between system components as the supply of new and renewable energy rapidly increases and old facilities increase. An arc that can cause a direct fire by releasing the induced light and heat has been pointed out as one of the causes of fire. Therefore, the problem of such an arc defect is that it is impossible to block an arc accident in advance with the existing overcurrent circuit breaker and earth leakage circuit breaker. In this paper, we intend to develop a test equipment that satisfies international standardization and to develop a DC arc generator to protect against failure and fire caused by arcing.
