  • Active vibration control via inertial mass actuators has been shown as an effective tool to significantly reduce human-induced vertical vibrations, allowing structures to satisfy vibration serviceability limits. However, a lot of practical obstacles have to be solved before experimental implementations. This has motivated simple control techniques, such as direct velocity feedback control (DVFC), which is implemented in practice by integrating the signal of an accelerometer with a band-pass filter working as a lossy integrator. This work provides practical guidelines for the tuning of DVFC considering the damping performance, inertial mass actuator limitations, such as stroke and force saturation, as well as the stability margins of the closed-loop system. Experimental results on a full scale steel-concrete composite structure (behaves similar to a footbridge) with adjustable span are reported to illustrate the main conclusions of this work.

  • In this paper, effect of antenna diversity on pseudorandom noise (PN) code acquisition performance is analyzed and simulated for a direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) overlay system where a CDMA user and a narrowband user coexist in the same frequency band. From the simulation results, it is shown that the antenna diversity is very effective in improving the PN acquisition performance. The results of this paper can be applied to design of synchronization scheme for a DS/CDMA overlay environment.

  • We prove that $M_1\longrightarrow^f\;M_2$ is an injective representation of a quiver $Q={\bullet}{\rightarrow}{\bullet}$ if and only if $M_1\;and\;M_2$ are injective left R-modules, $M_1\longrightarrow^f\;M_2$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of representation of the types $E_l{\rightarrow}0$ and $M_1\longrightarrow^{id}\;M_2$ where $E_l\;and\;E_2$ are injective left R-modules. Then, we generalize the result so that a representation$M_1\longrightarrow^{f_1}\;M_2\; \longrightarrow^{f_2}\;\cdots\;\longrightarrow^{f_{n-1}}\;M_n$ of a quiver $Q={\bullet}{\rightarrow}{\bullet}{\rightarrow}{\cdots}{\rightarrow}{\bullet}$ is an injective representation if and only if each $M_i$ is an injective left R-module and the representation is a direct sum of injective representations.

  • In this paper, we present a novel approach to analyze the throughput of direct-sequence spread spectrum multiple access (DS/SSMA) unslotted ALOHA system. In the unslotted system, the departure rate of interfering transmissions is proportional to the number of current interferers that can be regarded as the system state. In order to model this state-dependency, we introduce a two-dimensional state transition model that describes the state transition of the system. This model provides a more rigorous analysis tool for the DS/SSMA unslotted ALOHA systems with both fixed and variable packet lengths. Numerical results reveal that this analysis yields an accurate system performance that coincides with the simulation results. Throughout the analysis we have discovered that the state-dependency of the departure rate causes interference averaging effect in the unslotted system and that this effect yields a higher throughput for the unslotted system than for the slotted system when supported by a strong channel coding.

  • The method of steepest descent is applied to the analysis of electrostatic problems. The differences between iterative method and direct method, e.g. the method of moments, are not lined. It is shown that this method converges monotonically to the exact solution and is suitable for solving a problem of large system. Numerical results are presented for electrostatic case which show a good agreement with momet solution.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to analyze the performance degradation by timing jitters in the receivers of intensity modulation/direct detection digital optical communication systems where pulse-shaping filters are used to minimize intersymbol interference. The results obtained from the proposed analytical method show that conventional analytical methods underestimate the influence of timing jitters on the receiver performance. Using the proposed anlaytical method, we derive an analytic equation for approximated power penalty due to timing itters and obtain an exact power penalty by numerical analyses. Assuming Gaussian or uniform probability density function for timing jitters, we also show that assumption of Gaussian distribution for timing jitters yields more performance degration than that of uniform distribution.

  • A log periodic microstrip array antenna using direct coupling feeder is designed at the frequency 7.2-12.4GHz. Transmission line analysis method was used for the design of each antenna element in consideration of the effects of dielectric and conductor loss and the discontinuity, also the optimized feeding points were obtained for the impedance matching between a main transmission line and each antenna element. It is shown that the measured VSWR was less that 2.4 at the frequency 7.2-12.4GHz, and 53% bandwidth was achived.

  • This paper analyzes matched-filter acquistion performance of a direct-sequence spread-specturm multiple-access system in a Rayleigh fading channel. For an application of multiple access system, multiple access interference is considered in the performance analysis. A signal flow graph technique is used to derive mean acquisition time in terms of detection and false alarm probabilities. As aresult of performance analysis, it is shown that mean acquisition time increases as fading rate becomes faster andthe numbre of users increases, and it decreases as a matched-filter length becomes logner. The variation of parameter values hs much influence on acquisition performance as SNR/chip becomes smaller.

  • We propose an incremental relaying protocol in conjunction with opportunistic communication for differential modulation with an aim to make efficient use of the degrees of freedom of the channels by exploiting a imited feedback signal from the destination. In particular, whenever the direct link from the source to the destination is not favorable to decoding, the destination will request the help from the opportunistic relay (if any). The performance of the proposed system is derived in terms of average bit error probability and achievable spectral efficiency. The analytic results show that the system assisted by the opportunistic relaying can achieve full diversity at low SNR regime and exhibits a 30㏈ gain relative to direct transmission, assuming single-antenna terminals. We also determine the effect of power allocation on the bit error probability BEP) performance of our relaying scheme. We conclude with a discussion on the relationship between the given thresholds and channel resource savings. Monte-Carlo simulations are performed to verify the analysis.

  • This paper describes the resistive FET mixer with low IF for the 4-Ch DBF(Digital Beam Forming) receiver with LNA(Low Noise Amplifier). This DBF receiver based on the direct conversion method is generally suitable for high-speed wireless mobile communications. A radio frequency(RF), a local oscillator(LO) and an intermediate frequency(IF) considered in this research are 2.09 ㎓, 2.08 ㎓ and 10㎒, respectively. The RF input power, LO input power and Vgs are used -10㏈m, 6㏈m and -0.4 V, respectively. In the 4-Ch resistive FET mixer with LNA, the measured IF and harmonic components of 10㎒, 20㎒, 2.09㎓ and 4.17㎓ are about -12.5 ㏈m, -57㏈m, -40㏈m and -54㏈m, respectively. The IF output power observed at each channel of 10㎒ is about -12.5㏈m and it is higher 27.5 ㏈m than the maximum harmonic component of 2.09㎓. Each IF output spectrum of the 4-Ch is observed almost same value and it shows a good agreement with the prediction.
