  • This paper is to show the diphthong system of Jeju dialect speakers in their 70s or more on the basis of the acoustic analysis of their phonetic data. It is revealed through the analysis of their phonetic data that they clearly distinguish such diphthongs as [we], [w$\epsilon$], [yc] and [yo]. However, this paper shows that they are phonetically insensitive to the separation between [ye] and [y$\epsilon$] and they seldom make a precise pronunciation of diphthong [iy], which male speakers tend to pronounce to be [i] and female speakers to be [i].

  • There is a limitation of using a small number of input buttons for writing Hangul words on hand-held devices. As a quick and convenient way of implementing Hangul vowels by small number of buttons, we propose a vowel input system in which vowels are fabricated from eight vowels. Our input system supports a fast input speed by making all the diphthong from one or two strokes. It also adopts a multiple input method for diphthong that users can make a diphthong in a user-friendly way of vowel writing formation or pronunciation similarity. Furthermore, we added an error correction functionality for the similar vowels that are caused by vowel harmony rules. When the proposed method is compared to the previous ones, our method outperformed in the input speed and error correction.

  • This work examines classification of diphthongs, as part of a distinctive feature-based speech recognition system. Acoustic measurements related to the vocal tract and the voice source are examined, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) results show that vowel duration, energy trajectory, and formant variation are significant. A balanced error rate of 17.8% is obtained for 2-way diphthong classification on the TIMIT database, and error rates of 32.9%, 29.9%, and 20.2% are obtained for /aw/, /ay/, and /oy/, for 4-way classification, respectively. Adding the acoustic features to widely used Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients also improves classification.

  • In the case of making large vocabulary speech recognition system, it is better to use the segment than the syllable or the word as the recognition unit. In this paper, we study on the basis of making biphone for Korean speech recognition. For experiments, we use the speech toolkit of OGI in U.S.A. The result shows that the recognition rate of the case in which the diphthong is established as a single unit is superior to that of the case in which the diphthong Is established as two units, i.e. a glide plus a vowel. And also, the recognition rate of the case in which the biphone is used as the recognition unit is better than that of the case in which the mono-phoneme is used.

  • In this paper, we studied on the phoneme classification for Korean speech recognition. In the case of making large vocabulary speech recognition system, it is better to use phoneme than syllable or word as recognition unit. And, In order to study the difference of speech recognition according to the number of phoneme as recognition unit, we used the speech toolkit of OGI in U.S.A as recognition system. The result showed that the performance of diphthong being unified was better than that of seperated diphthongs, and we required the better result when we used the biphone than when using mono-phone as recognition unit.

  • In this paper, we present an English pronunciation correction system for Korean speakers and show some of experimental results on it. The aim of the system is to detect mispronounced phonemes in spoken words and to give appropriate correction comments to users. There are several English pronunciation correction systems adopting speech recognition technology, however, most of them use conventional speech recognition engines. From this reason, they could not give phoneme based correction comments to users. In our system, we build two kinds of phoneme models: standard native speaker models and Korean's error models. We also design recognition network based on phonemes to detect Koreans' common mispronunciations. We get 90% detection rate in insertion/deletion/replacement of phonemes, but we cannot get high detection rate in diphthong split and accents.

  • In this paper, we present some of experimental results developed in computer-based English Pronunciation Correction System for Korean speakers. The aim of the system is to detect incorrectly pronounced phonemes in spoken words and to give correction comment to users. Speech data were collected from 254 native speakers and 411 Koreans, then used for phoneme modeling and test. We built two types of acoustic phoneme models: native speaker model and Korean speaker model. We also built langugage models to reflect Koreans' commonly occurred mispronunications. The detection rate was over 90% in insertion/deletion/replacement of phonemes, but we got under 75% detection rate in diphthong split and accents.

In the case of making large vocabulary speech recognition system, it is better to use the segment than the syllable or the word as the recognition unit. The result shows that the recognition rate of the case in which the diphthong is established as a single unit is superior to that of the case in which the diphthong is established as two units, i.e. a glide plus a vowel. And recognizer using manually-aligned training data is a little superior to that using automatically-aligned training data. Also, the recognition rate of the case in which the bipbone is used as the recognition unit is better than that of the case in which the mono-Phoneme is used.
