  • Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) is commercially important in Korea because its caviar is highly prized. Although the early ontogeny of the species has been described, behavioral modifications in response to various light intensities or diel photoperiodicity patterns have not been studied extensively. The objective of the present study was to examine the behavioral characteristics of hatchery-produced A. gueldenstaedtii prelarvae over a diel photoperiodic cycle. During a diel light cycle comprising 16 h of daylight (450 lx), 4 h of dim light (10 lx), and 4 h of darkness (< 1 lx), newly hatched A. gueldenstaedtii prelarvae exhibited negative phototaxis in daylight (day 0-day 2), and this early behavior was not significantly affected by changes of light intensities. Rheotactic and non-rheotactic aggregation into schools was typical between days 3 and 6. Under the diel light cycle conditions described, rheotaxis was not influenced by environmental light intensity as much as non-rheotactic schooling behavior. Post-schooling behavior, which progressed from day 7 to day 8, did not change significantly during the diel light cycle. The data from the present study could be of practical value in developing a visual guide for assessing the fitness and quality of Russian sturgeon prelarvae under diel light cycle conditions in hatcheries.

  • A comparison of the functional components underlying photoperiodism and circadian rhythmicity in the same species is an interesting issue in the context of unravelling clock mechanisms. In the present study, covering or surgical removal of the compound eyes was performed to localize photoreceptors for photoperiodism to control reproductive diapause and for entrainment of circadian locomotor rhythms in the blow fly Protophormia terraenovae. Intact flies showed a long-day photoperiodic response. When the compound eyes were covered by silver paint, diapause incidence increased under diapause-averting conditions of a long-day photoperiod and constant light, as if flies were kept under constant darkness. Covering of a medial region of the head capsule or solvent painting of the compound eyes gave no significant effects. When the compound eyes were removed, flies did not distinguish the photoperiod, whereas removal of antennal lobes or ocelli did not affect the photoperiodism. Intact flies showed a freerunning rhythm under constant darkness. The rhythm entrained to light-dark (LD) cycles with light of high and low intensity. When the compound eyes and ocelli were surgically removed, the rhythm entrained to LD cycles with light of high intensity but freeran under LD cycles with light of low intensity. The results suggest the retinal pathways are involved in photoperiodism and that flies use both retinal and extraretinal pathways for rhythm entrainment. Under dim light-LD cycles, the retinal pathways mainly mediate rhythm entrainment. Retinal photoreceptors seem to be used both for photoperiodism and entrainment of the rhythm.

  • The accuracy of the gamma function to describe lactation curve of Yankasa ewes was investigated using milk production data obtained from 168 ewes with either complete or incomplete 84 day lactation records. Ewes were daily hand milked after over-night separation from lamb and thorough disinfection of the udder. The daily milk yield on the average was estimated from the weekly total yield. The effect of type of birth, parity, season of birth and lactation length on the components of lactation curve (a, b, c and s) were analysed by least-square procedures. All factors except parity significantly (p<0.01) influenced the curve parameters. The goodness of fit of the function did not differ between the two classes of varying duration of lactation; incomplete lactation however, showed a lower persistency and as expected lower level of production. Correlations ($r_p$) between lamb weight gain and milk yield using the weight records from lamb weighed at weekly intervals indicated a high and positive relationship in the early lactation that decreased in intensity as the lactation advanced.

  • Rhodopsin, a dim-light receptor, is a model system for the study of G protein-coupled receptors that transduce extracellular signals into cells. To study the molecular mechanisms of visual systems in fish, the rod opsin gene of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus was characterized. The full-length P. olivaceus opsin gene was obtained by PCR amplification of genomic DNA, as well as cDNA synthesis. A comparison of clones obtained from both methods indicated that the olive flounder rod opsin gene lacks introns. Sequence analysis of the opsin gene indicated that it contains a 1,056-bp open reading frame encoding 352 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence contains features of typical rod opsins, such as sites for Schiff's base formation (K296) and its counterion (E113), disulfide formation (C110 and C187), and palmitoylation (C322 and C323). An opsin sequence alignment showed the highest similarity between P. olivaceus and Solea solea (95.1%), followed by Hippoglossus hippoglossus (94.5%). An opsin phylogenetic tree revealed a close relationship between olive flounder and teleost rod opsins.

  • We report the optical follow-up observations of three long γ-ray burst events, GRB 201020A, GRB 201103B and GRB 210104A by the network of telescopes in the SomangNet project. We show light curves, color evolution and SED evolution, and fit them to a single power law function to derive decay index and compare their properties with other long GRBs samples. Also, we show a good observational example that 0.4-1m class telescopes in SomangNet have potential to catch dim light from high red shift object (R>22 mag) by deep imaging. In conclusion, we found that three GRBs have optical afterglow properties of long GRB and our results are consistent with the reports of high energy analysis.

  • With the current surge in leisure sports activities involving firearms and the costly shooting practices in the military, there's a growing interest in using virtual reality as a cost-effective alternative. This study proposes a system that addresses the drawbacks of existing shooting practice setups, such as dim spaces and high installation costs, by making it feasible on large display screens. The system integrates IR receivers and guns for practice, ensuring usability and efficiency through an application. Additionally, an accuracy adjustment feature enhances precise coordination recognition. As a result, this cyber light gun system offers an affordable solution for outdoor training.

  • Somatic embryos were induced from immature cotyledons and cultured on a MS medium containing 40mg/L 2,4-D. The maximum induction of embryos was obtained from immature cotyledons in a size of 3-4mm, and the highest frequency was obtained in the induction medium at pH 7.0. For embryo development, embryogenic tissues were transferred to a MSM6AC and MSM6 media. Developing embryos were placed at 27$^{\circ}C$with dim light (20$\mu$$molm^{-2}$$s^{-1}$) provided by cool fluorescent tubes (3-D wavelength light is better than standard light). Somatic embryos were clearly developed from globular stage to cotyledonary stages. The color of embryo may be a useful parameter for estimation of embryo quality. When the embryo becomes mature, embryo will be ready for desiccation in order to induce roots and shoots of embryos.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the change of impression by comparing the uniformity lighting with the compound lighting. In previous study, we proposed a light controlling method to harmonize daylight from a window and artificial lights from a ceiling and obtained the results to support our method. We referred this method as the Adjusted Compound-Lighting Model (AC Model). The experiment is carried out with the scaled-models and mock-up spaces that were supposed to be an office space. One is lit by the uniform lighting and the other by the compound lighting in each experimental space. In order to present varying illuminance distributions, the two variables were used in this study. Subjects were asked to evaluate the point of difference by semantic differential rating on their overall impression after comparing with two rooms. The results showed that the impressions of compound lighting were more positive score than that of uniformity lighting on the items of 'dim-bright', 'dislike-like', 'artificial-natural' and 'closed-open', and that there was no significant difference in impressions between two spaces on other items.
