  • In this paper, we proposed a new burst-mode optical transmitter structure which is suitable for high data rate operation such as Gb/s operation. With this structure we made a 1.25Gb/s burst-mode optical transmitter including a digitally controlled APC circuit for EPON systems using commercial 0.8m BiCMOS technology. It well functioned at 1.25Gb/s and showed good eye patterns with 53.3ps jitter, 191ps rise time and 258ps fall time. To characterize the APC function we measured optical output power as increasing external voltage VREF. The optical power is linearlyproportional to VREF at the rate of 0.293mW/V.

  • A new 8-bit single-slope ADC using analog RAMP generator with digitally controllable dynamic range has been proposed and simulated for column level or per-pixel CMOS image sensor application. The conversion gain of ADC can he controlled easily by using frequency divider with digitally controllable diviber ratio, coarse/fine RAMP with class-AB op-amp, resistor strings, decoder, comparator, and etc. The chip area and power consumption can be decreased by simplified analog circuits and passive components. Proposed frequency divider has been implemented and verified with 0.65um, 2-poly, 2-metal standard CMOS process. And the functional verification has been simulated and accomplished in a 0.35$\mu$m standard CMOS process.

  • Dithering scheme has been widely used to improve the resolution of DCO(Digitally Controlled Oscillator) in conventional ADPLLs(All Digital Phase Locked Loop). In this paper a new resolution improvement scheme is proposed where a simple DAC(Digital-to-Analog Converter) is employed to overcome the problems of dithering scheme. The frequencies are controled by varactors in coarse, fine, and DAC bank. The DAC bank consists of an inversion mode NMOS varactor. The other varactor banks consist of PMOS varactors. Each varactor bank is controlled by 8bit digital signal. The proposed DCO has been designed in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process. Measurement results shows that the designed DCO oscillates in 2.8GHz~3.5GHz and has a frequency tuning range of 660MHz and a resolution of 73Hz at 2.8GHz band. The designed DCO exhibits a phase noise of -119dBc/Hz at lMHz frequency offset. The DCO core consumes 4.2mA from l.2V supply. The chip area is $1.3mm{\times}1.3mm$ including pads.

  • This paper proposes a digitally controlled buck converter insensitive to process, voltage and temperature and capable of three modes of operation depending on the state of the output voltage. Conventional digital-controlled buck converters utilized A/D converters, counters and delay line circuits for accurate output voltage control, resulting in increasing the number of counter and delay line bits. This problem can be resolved by employing the 8-bit and 16-bit bidirectional shift registers, and this design technique leads a buck converter to be able to control duty ratio up to 128-bit resolution. The proposed buck converter was designed and fabricated with a CMOS 180 nano-meter 1-poly 6-metal process, generating an output voltage of 0.9 to 1.8V with the input voltage range of 2.7V to 3.6V, a ripple voltage of 30mV, and a power efficiency of up to 92.3%. The transient response speed of the proposed circuit was measured to be 4us.

  • The ability to provide quality power has become a significant issue in power systems. The main causes of poor power quality are harmonic currents, poor power factor, supply-voltage variations, etc. A technique of achieving both active current distortion compensation, power factor correction and also mitigating the supply-voltage variation (sag or swell) at the load side is presented in this paper. The operation and rating issues of the proposed Single-phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner are also highlighted. To reduce the total cost while simultaneously increasing the performance, the system is fully digitally controlled using the fixed-point TMS320F240 digital signal processor. The performances of the UPQC, which is composed by shunt and series PWM controlled-converters, have been verified on a laboratory prototype.

  • As microcomputers have become widespread and the high speed solenoid valves have been developed, digitally controlled hydraulic systems are used in many applications. This study deals with position control of hydraulic cylinder operated by two port 3-way high speed solenoid valve using a self-learning strategy. This was done by developing a control algorithm for the microcomputer which always automatically adjust the length of control pulse to the optimum value in accordance with the error regardless of changes in the operating condition and physical differences between components. Tests carried out in the laboratory indicate that a positional accuracy could be improved.

  • This paper proposes a new circuit for capacitive sensing based on Dickson's charge pump. The proposed touch sensing circuit includes three stages of NMOS diodes and capacitors for charge transfer. The proposed circuit which has a simplified capacitive touch sensor model has been analyzed and simulated by Spectre using Magna EDMOS technology. Looking from the simulation results, the proposed circuit can effectively be used as a capacitive touch sensing circuit. Moreover, a simple structure can provide maximum flexibility for making a digitally-controlled touch sensor driver with lowpower operations.

  • This paper reports a novel microfluidic system, by which microfluidic delivery, transport and control can be digitally realized in femtoliter scale. Microelectronic grade $N_2$ from a pressurized canister was passed through HPLC tubing into a micro injector. The micro injector was driven and controlled digitally by the control system that can apply various control parameters such as pulse frequencies. A front-end of micro nozzle was inserted the dyed oil to collect droplets injected. The diameter of a droplet was measured by a microscope and a CCD camera, and then its volume can be calculated on the assumption that the droplet is spherical. The micro nozzles were simply pulled in glass capillary tubes by the micro puller self-made, and the geometry parameters of the micro nozzles can be adjusted easily. Experiments have successfully been carried out, and the results demonstrated that the proposed digital micro injector possesses three significant advantages : precise ultra-small liquid volume in femtoliter scale, digital microfluidic control and micro devices fabricated by simple glass process, not based on IC process.
