Decision-Makings of CoPS Innovation Strategy, Power and Dominant Design - the Case of SKT and KTF

  • This study aims at examining each firm's decision-makings of complex product and system (hereafter CoPS) innovation strategy, so that it tries to reveal the nature and role of CoPS innovations strategy. And it designed a comparative case study along with qualitative methods, by having two mobile operators' digital rights management (hereafter DRM) innovation in South Korea's digital music service industry. Through literature review, this study formulated three research propositions: (i) Each firm's decision-makings of CoPS innovations strategy are analytical negotiation process among economic actors in an industry; (ii) Each firm's market power originated from its market share from the installed base through network effect and switching cost influence decision-makings of CoPS innovation strategies; (iii) Each firm's decision-makings of different CoPS innovation strategies are related to their intension of achieving better market power, consequently dominant design. Through empirical examination of two mobile operators' decision-makings of DRM innovation strategy, this study empirically verified three research propositions.

  • This paper examines critical successful facts related with the digital new product development with product innovation. For this, we have selected a Xcanvas time-machine TV of LG electronics and we have done case-study. We have performed in-depth interviews with engineers, team managers, marketers to get facts on the product development process and analyzed huge amount of data obtained from web-sites and related firms' materials. We have concluded that CSFs of Xcanvas time-machine TV are customer-centered product innovation, new perspective of considering technology and product, managing innovative team and motivation to team member.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 제품/서비스 개발 과정에 있어서 공급자와 고객이 언제 어떻게 참여해야 하는가는 실증적으로 규명하는 것이다. 이를 통해 이들을 어떻게 그리고 언제 참여시키는 것이 효과적인지에 대한 함의를 제시할 수 있다. 분석결과 높은 고객 참여는 전략설계와 제품/서비스 혁신간의 관계를 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 제품 개발 초기에 고객이 참여할 경우 혁신성과를 높일 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 반대로 평가개선 단계에서 고객의 높은 참여는 제품/서비스 혁신에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 평가개선 단계에서는 고객의 아이디어보다는 제품/서비스를 실현할 수 있는 전문지식이 더 요구됨을 나타낸다.

  • 디지털 세계가 도래하면서 산업차원에서 디지털 트랜스포메이션이 가장 활발하게 이루어지고 있는 영역은 음악, 영화, 드라마와 같은 창작산업이다. 이들 창작물이 0과 1로 이루어진 디지털 포맷으로 전환되면서 비즈니스 모델이 변화하고 그 결과 시장에서 경쟁의 룰이 바뀌었다. 애플과 스포티파이, 넷플릭스는 창작산업에서 디지털 트랜스포메이션을 통해 시장 리더가 된 기업들이다. 본 연구는 창작 산업의 사례연구를 통해 디지털 기술을 활용한 시장재편에 필요한 중요한 요소를 파악하는 것이다. 사례 연구 결과, 디지털 기술을 활용해 시장을 재편한 기업들의 전략적 특성은 비전, 플랫폼, 그리고 개방적 혁신이라는 세 가지 요소임을 발견하였다. 반면 이러한 전략을 구사하지 못해 디지털 혁신의 기회를 놓친 기업들은 디지털 다위니즘의 희생양으로 몰락의 길을 걸었다. 본 논문은 4차산업혁명 시대의 디지털 트랜스포메이션은 세 가지 전략요소를 최대한 활용함으로써 플랫폼을 구축하고, 가급적 많은 파트너들이 플랫폼에 동참할 수 있도록 개방적인 혁신으로 초기에 크리티컬 매스를 확보하는 것이 무엇보다도 중요하다는 시사점을 제시하고 있다.

  • Expansion and enhancement of information and communication infrastructure can create a market closer to an ideal type for a perfect competition, utilizing a cyber space in the network (with the expanded usage of Internet and e-commerce) and it could be a market of a monopolistic form. The government can take one of the two approaches responding to this monopolization of the digital market. First, the government maintains laissez-faire policy since the monopoly cannot be maintained over a long period of time due to an increasing in the production, decrease in the price, profit resulting from this and rapid technology evolution. Second, the government can actively interrupt the monopolization of the digital market. Monopolization in a digital market can lead to a market failure. Unstable market structure and too much frequent merger and acquisition contribute to making the digital market very dynamic. Information goods exchanged in the digital market have the features of very low marginal cost required to copy the original product whereas its initial fixed cost is very high. This explains why the information products are not priced based on the existing marginal price determination principles and why companies producing them have various product sales strategies (price/product differentiation strategy, and other sales strategies).

  • This study aims to investigate the impact of wide use of digital technology, in particular, the Internet, on innovation process and corporate strategy in electronics industry. The introduction of digital technology has changed innovation process, business model and organizational structure of the electronics companies. With the introduction of digital technology, the entire value chain of electronics industry from procurement, sales, and marketing to R&D and manufacturing has been restructured. E-commerce has been a major agenda for e-business. Recently, collaboration among electronics companies through e-marketplace has emerged as an important issue. A web-based e-commerce standard, so called RosettaNet, has been developed for facilitating e-transactions of electronics firms. The development of digital technology has dramatically increased the processing speed and sophisticated the virtual reality technology. As simulation becomes easier and more effective, the uncertainty and risk involved in R&D has decreased significantly. Another positive impact is closer cooperation between R&D and manufacturing functions. Taking advantage of automated and flexible production technology, has a new type of firm, so called, EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) emerged, whose strategic focus is on manufacturing only. The EMS can be seen as a kind of innovative organization, that is, a modular organization for production function. Digital technology has made convergence of computer and communication possible at early years but right now the convergence has been accelerated in extensive areas of communication, broadcasting, information appliances, software, contents, and services. Firms' effort for an innovative product and service has been intensified and the competition for a new standard product and service has become severe in electronics industry. Business activities are always realized in a specific organizational context. Accordingly building up innovation-friendly organization has emerged as a critical concern. Due to the striking decrease of transaction cost, a network type of organization has proliferated, and a business function turns into a modular organization. As a whole, digital technology has pushed electronics firms into developing their own business model, which takes consideration of standardization of business platform and their core competency.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 TV산업에서 지배적 디지털 TV에 영향을 미치는 지배적 디자인 결정요인과 제품핵심요소를 규명하는 것이다. 이를 위하여, 전문가 설문조사를 통해 자료를 수집하고, 구조방정식 모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 지배적 디자인의 결정요인은 디스플레이, 디자인, 특성에 영향을 주고 디스플레이와 디자인이 지배적 디지털 TV를 만드는 데 영향을 주는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 본 연구는 우리나라 TV기업이 지속적으로 지배적 디자인을 선도하여 선도자로서의 역할을 유지토록 사업전략 수립의 기초자료로써 큰 의미가 있다 하겠다.

패션 브랜드의 디지털 트랜스포메이션 전략에 관한 연구 - 버버리 사례를 중심으로 - (A study on the digital transformation strategy of a fashion brand - Focused on the Burberry case -)

  • Today, the fashion business environment of the 4.0 generation is changing based on fashion technology combined with advanced digital technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), big data and IoT (Internet of Things). "Digital Transformation" means a fundamental change and innovation in a digital paradigm including corporate strategy, organization, communication, and business model, based on the utilization of digital technology. Thus, this study examines digital transformation strategies through the fashion brand Burberry. The study contents are as follows. First, it examines the theoretical concept of digital transformation and its utilization status. Second, it analyzes the characteristics of Burberry's digital transformation based on its strategies. For the research methodology, a literature review was performed on books and papers, aligning with case studies through websites, social media, and news articles. The result showed that first, Burberry has reset their main target to Millennials who actively use mobile and social media, and continues to communicate with them by utilizing digital strategy in the entire management. Second, Burberry is quickly delivering consistent brand identity to consumers by internally creating and providing social media-friendly content. Third, they have started real-time product sales and services by using IT to enhance access to brands and to lead consumers towards more active participation. In this study, Burberry's case shows that digital transformation can contribute to increased brand value and sales, keeping up with the changes in the digital paradigm. Therefore, the study suggests that digital transformation will serve as an important business strategy for fashion brands in the future.

벤처기업의 창업자특성과 역량, 기업전략이 조직유효성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (The Affects of Characteristics of CEO, Competence on Corporate Strategy and Organizational effectiveness in Venture Companies)

  • 본 연구에서는 벤처기업의 조직유효성으로 직무몰입, 조직몰입, 이직의도로 구성하고 선행요인으로 창업자특성, 기업역량특성, 전략특성으로 설정하고 규명하기 위해 벤처기업을 대상으로 실증분석하여 그 결과를 바탕으로 정책적 시사점을 제시하였다. 연구대상지역은 수도권 및 비수도권 총 301명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구결과 창업자의 심리적 특성, 역량특성, 기업역량 등이 조직유효성 하위요소로 구성한 직무몰입, 조직몰입, 이직의도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었으며, 전략특성 역시 창업자 및 기업역량과 조직유효성과의 관계에 긍정적인 매개효과가 있는 것으로 조사되었다.
