This research categorizes the factors of digital capital accumulated both in personal and social level into digital access and digital competence, and empirically analyzes how the use of public libraries effects on the formation of digital capital. As a result, it was found that participation in public library programs, the use of information services, and the utilization of digital collections had positive effect on the formation and accumulation of digital capital at the personal and social level. In contrast, it was analyzed that the use of digital collections in public libraries did not significantly affect the creation of digital contents or reciprocal collaboration based on online networks. Therefore, in order for public libraries to fully support the formation of digital capital, they should not only provide knowledge and information which is a traditional role of public libraries, but also play a role as a digital-based cooperative system.

The goal of this paper is mainly to review and summarize the multimedia information formats and technical standards that have been applied so that library and information specialists can understand them systematically. The most fundamental differences between digital library and the classic one are specified by describing the general characteristics of hypermedia information environment. With the proprietary advantages of multimedia technology to digital library developments, the core technological standards (publicly available) of text and non-text data, including multimedia data, are reviewed. Finally, it describes some important and professional perspectives and roles of library practioners as well as researchers who are engaged with the innovation of digital library.

This study aims to evaluate the usability of XML-based Chungnam National University Digital Library Website. Usability testing are used three method, that is Log File Analysis, Online Questionnaire and Heuristic Evaluation. Log files are analyzed in using WiseLog Enterprise and Hit Analyzer for Enterprise jx 1.5 Beta Version and total 21 items are analyzed and evaluated in using online questionnaire method and heuristic evaluation is inquired by experts of web and information retrieval fields. Finally this paper was suggested some problems and improvements to advance quality of user services in university digital library website in korea.

Huge amount of useful information is getting added to the academic digital world everyday, This digitalized information is heterogeneous and remained limited to a local domain only. How to integrate and share this scattered knowledge with simplicity remained a big challenge. In this paper, we propose a prototype of web application for accomplishing above task using web 2.0 features; it makes traditional academic digital libraries to form as a special case of collaborative environment. This application enables users to customize their own resources to form their own virtual digital library. Further users can utilize personalized information of other users working in similar research domain to form true collaborative environment. The model and framework for the new look of academic digital library is presented.

Local languages based information storage and retrieval system is essential for any online digital repository system. This paper reports the development of an interface in Bengali that allows users not only browsing and searching Indic-script based documents but also allows administrator performing various system level operations. This paper briefly describes the origin and key characteristics of Indic-scripts along with their encoding in Unicode standard with special reference to Bengali language. It also demonstrates the development processes of Bengal-script based information representation and retrieval (IRR) system viz. BURA (Burdwan University Research Archive) using different open standard and open source software (OSS) including different factors essential for building such successful Indic-script based multilingual digital libraries. The suggested strategies may help digital library developers to design an appropriate multi-script based information access services in any other Indic-script based languages.

Legal deposit system is an essential tool for a national library to ensure the preservation and access to a nation's intellectual heritage over time. Substantial amounts of digital materials of national cultural value are already being published. There is a global trend towards extending legal deposit to cover digital materials in order to maintain comprehensive national archives. This paper gives a progress report of some countries around the world whose legal deposit laws have already updated or are under revision. Some strategies are suggested for the digital collection building of the Korean National Digital Library which will open in 2008.

도쿄공업대학전자도서관(TDL:Titech Digital Library)은 1999년 4월에 서비스를 시작했다 TDL은 이공학 분야의 다양한 정보자원과 이용자를 명쾌하게 연결시키는 게이트웨이 기능의 실현을 목적으로 한 전자도서관 시스템이다. 본고에서는 우선 도쿄공업대학부속도서관에서 TDL의 도입 이전에 시도해 온 여러 가지 전자적 정보 서비스에 대해서 되돌아보고, 이어서 TDL 설계의 구상(Concept), 그 구상을 실현하기위한 시스템의 기본기능에 대하여 실제 서비스 전개 상황을 삽입해 가면서 설명한 후, 마지막으로 금후의 과제와 전망에 대해서 언급한다. This study discussed the problems of internet search engines or metadata and the necessity to catalog the digital information resources including information resources on the networks in libraries. The internet search engines or metadata make digital information resources indexed or organized immediately. But traditional library bibliographic tools like catalog should be described accurately and fully, and standardized in addition to the rapidity. Therefore from the library standpoint, digital information resources should be cataloged fully too. Cataloging cost of the increasing digital information resources can be reduced by cooperating and sharing the works among the libraries.
