Digital Orientation for Emerging Multinationals and the Location Strategies in Internationalization: The Chinese Experience

  • Purpose Despite the ongoing digital transformation, it is not clear whether emerging market firms follow their manufacturing FDI path in the emerging digital industries. This paper examines how digital orientation affects the location strategies in internationalization and how the existing innovation capacities moderate the link between digital orientation and the location strategies. Design/methodology/approach This study chooses the Chinese setting for research design because digital transformation is already prevalent in the society and the cases of outward expansion are salient among the emerging markets. It uses the panel dataset of 976 Chinese listed firms that consists of 6,648 observations spanning from 2007 to 2017. Ordinary least square regression is used for the statistical approach with a one-year lag in the model. Findings Digital orientation increases a likelihood of emerging multinationals' entries in developed countries, and a high level of innovative capacities strengthens the link. Two groups seem to prefer entries in developed countries: firms with a high level of digital orientation with a high level of innovative capacities and firms with a low level of digital orientation, if with a low level of innovative capacities. The former reflects the context of digital transformation and the latter hints at the tax avoidance or interests in real estate. Research implications or originality While emerging multinationals are known to prefer entries in developing countries for capacity arbitrage, our results forecast that their FDI strategies may have a drastic change as digital transformation deepens.

Reading Speed Comparison: Paragraphs in Digital and Print Media (디지털 매체와 인쇄 매체에서의 문단 읽기 속도 비교)

  • This study aimed to examine whether there are differences in reading performance between digital and print media by measuring reading speed of paragraphs on print materials and tablet PC. To investigate whether the physical characteristics of the media influence reading performance, the format of text was kept as similar as possible between print and digital media. We also compared conditions in which paragraphs consisted of either long or short sentences to explore if there were differential effects on reading performance based on sentence length across different media. Additionally, reading speed was analyzed based on reading span to investigate whether there were differences in reading performance according to participants' working memory capacity. As a result, reading speed was faster when reading print media compared to digital media. However, there was no difference in reading speed based on the length of sentences composing the paragraphs. Participants with a higher reading span exhibited faster reading speed compared to participants with a lower reading span. Moreover, participants with a higher reading span read paragraphs composed of long sentences faster on print media than on digital media. The findings of this study suggest that visual fatigue induced by tablet PCs and participants' working memory capacity may impact reading speed.

A Study on the Capacity Enhancement of HDR-WPAN System (HDR-WPAN 시스템의 용량증대 방안 연구)

  • In this paper, we proposed a capacity enhancement method using TCM-128QAM modulation and bandwidth extension of 25MHz in HDR-WPAN (high data rate wireless personal area network) system. In case using TCM-128 QAM modulation scheme, we can obtain maximum 66Mbps transmission rate in bandwidth of 15MHz. If extend bandwidth by 25MHz and roll-off coefficient ${\alpha}=0.35$, we can obtain maximum 110Mbps transmission rate. These results are confirmed through PSD(power spectrum density) analysis and BER (bit error rate) performance.

  • Since a 2-dimensional (2D) bar code can retrieve data and information quickly, it is widely used and recognized as a useful tool for many industrial applications. However, the information capacity of the 2D bar code is still limited. Recently the analog-digital code (AD code), which has the largest storage capacity yet contained in a code, has been developed, thereby expanding the bar code's application range because it overcomes the limitation of data capacity. In this paper, we present the AD code and implement an effective embedded system which can transform text information into voice using the 2D AD code and Text To Speech (TTS). This voice information can also be transmitted to blind people as well as the old by capturing the AD code on paper or in books.

Predicting the maximum lateral load of reinforced concrete columns with traditional machine learning, deep learning, and structural analysis software

  • Recently, many engineering computations have realized their digital transformation to Machine Learning (ML)-based systems. Predicting the behavior of a structure, which is mainly computed with structural analysis software, is an essential step before construction for efficient structural analysis. Especially in the seismic-based design procedure of the structures, predicting the lateral load capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a vital factor. In this study, a novel ML-based model is proposed to predict the maximum lateral load capacity of RC columns under varying axial loads or cyclic loadings. The proposed model is generated with a Deep Neural Network (DNN) and compared with traditional ML techniques as well as a popular commercial structural analysis software. In the design and test phases of the proposed model, 319 columns with rectangular and square cross-sections are incorporated. In this study, 33 parameters are used to predict the maximum lateral load capacity of each RC column. While some traditional ML techniques perform better prediction than the compared commercial software, the proposed DNN model provides the best prediction results within the analysis. The experimental results reveal the fact that the performance of the proposed DNN model can definitely be used for other engineering purposes as well.

  • I conducted a study on the capacity evaluation and management of the main homepage screen to improve the availability of government institutions. As a result of three times evaluating the size of the homepage main page of the major institutions, the capacity of the homepage of the institution was very enormous, and when there were many concurrent users, the server was easily loaded. Governmental management guidelines are needed to fundamentally solve these problems, with the periodic and ongoing homepage management of each institution. In the future, the web site management detailed checkpoints should be additionally established in the government web site installation and management guidelines, and the recommended checking items; homepage performance evaluation, lightening homepage capacity.

  • This study analyze whether the organizational learning culture affects the firm's dynamic capacity and whether the dynamic capacity mediates the relationship between organizational learning culture and management performance. Respectively. First, "The more organizational structure is organic, the higher the integrated relocation capacity and learning capacity. Organizations with organic organizational structures were found to have the ability to successfully adapt to external changes because there is a practice that is not tied to formal processing or procedures. Second, it can be seen that there is a positive (+) influence on the relocation capacity among the dynamic competence of the learning culture of the corporate organization. Third, both sub-factors of dynamic competence have positive (+) influence on business performance. Also, there was no mediating effect of dynamic competence related to learning culture.

  • To use external knowledge for Creative product, This study suggests the model of Technological entrepreneurship, Absorptive capacity - Potential absorptive capacity(PACAP), Realized absorptive capacity (RACAP), Creative product and moderating effect of Motivation. This model was set up though literature research method. Empirical analysis was conducted by using 487 questionnaires from workers of electronic industry in Kyung-buk. Results of study are as followings; 1. Technological entrepreneurship related positively to Creative product. 2. Creative product was affected through process in order of Technological entrepreneurship, PACAP, RACAP. 3. Intrinsic motivation strengthens the relation between Technological entrepreneurship and PACAP. 4. Extrinsic motivation strengthens the relation between PACAP and RACAP. This results will contribute to the improvement of Creativity and the utilization of external knowledge.

CST-Tree with improved Mint system multimedia content using the refine (CST-트리를 채택한 Mint 시스템을 이용한 멀티미디어 콘텐츠 검색 개선)

  • Multimedia contents' searching methods in existing mobile computer environment tend to be brought with many over heads when attempting to search data in large bulks. The MINT system has been studied to resolve such problem. However, MINT system delivers many over heads by searching multimedia contents through applying B-Tree. The suggested method is said to be CST-MCR searching system based on CST-Tree. The specific characteristic of this method is improved MINT system by applying CST-Tree's index. The result of capacity evaluation came out with improved capacity of 4.27% from MINT system and CST-MCR methods in average. Conclusively, it has been proven that the suggested method is superior.

  • Data storage related with writing and retrieving requires high storage capacity, fast transfer rate and less access time in. Today any data storage system can not satisfy these conditions, but holographic data storage system can perform faster data transfer rate because it is a page oriented memory system using volume hologram in writing and retrieving data. System architecture without mechanical actuating part is possible, so fast data transfer rate and high storage capacity about $1Tb/cm^3$ can be realized. In this paper, to correct errors of binary data stored in holographic digital data storage system, find cluster centers using subtractive clustering and reduce intensities of pixels around centers, so the intensify profile of data rare will be uniform and the better data storage system can be realized.
