  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the pattern distribution of the odorous compounds and air pollutants from the inventory sources in the Cheon-an second industrial complex. Twelve analysis including specified odor materials and air pollutants were concurrently measured during the month of August, 2005 to evalaute odor emission characterization in m3;or treatment facilities. Also, Concentration of air pollutants has been calculated by ISCST3 in ISC3 models. A Korean air diffusion modeling software, Air Master, was developed on a basis of diffusion theories adopted in U.S. EPA's ISC3 model to assess the air quality impact from the stacks. This investigation will be executed how large the complex pollutant sources such as industrial complex contribute to atmospheric environment and air quality of the surrounding the area as predicting by comparing and analyzing results of odorous compounds and air pollutants diffusion concentration model.

  • Objective : In order to assess the incidence of thromboembolic events and their clinical presentations, the present study prospectively examined routine brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) taken within 48 hours after a coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms. Methods : From January 2006 to January 2008, 163 cases of coil embolization of cerebral aneurysm were performed along with routine brain MRI, including diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (DW-MR) imaging, within 48 hours after the embolization of the aneurysm to detect the silent thromboembolic events regardless of any neurological changes. If any neurological changes were observed, an immediate brain MRI follow-up was performed. High-signal-intensity lesions in the DW-MR images were considered as acute thromboembolic events and the number and locations of the lesions were also recorded. Results : Among the 163 coil embolization cases, 98(60.1%) showed high-signal intensities in the DW-MR imaging follow-up, 66 cases (67.0%) involved the eloquent area and only 6cases (6.0%) showed focal neurological symptoms correlated to the DW-MR findings. The incidence of DW-MR lesions was higher in older patients (${\geq}60$ yrs) when compared to younger patients (<60 yrs) (p=0.002, odd's ratio=1.043). The older patients also showed a higher incidence of abnormal DW-MR signals in aneurysm-unrelated lesions (p=0.0003, odd's ratio=5.078). Conclusion : The incidence of symptomatic thromboembolic attacks after coil embolization of the cerebral aneurysm was found to be lower than that reported in previous studies. While DW-MR imaging revealed a higher number of thromboembolic events, most of these were clinically silent and transient and showed favorable clinical outcomes. However, the incidence of DW-MR abnormalities was higher in older patients, along with unpredictable thromboembolic events on DW-MR images. Thus, in order to provide adequate and timely treatment and to minimize neurological sequelae, a routine DW-MR follow-up after coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms might be helpful, especially in older patients.

  • Objective : Facial nerve palsy is a common complication of treatment for vestibular schwannoma (VS), so preserving facial nerve function is important. The preoperative visualization of the course of facial nerve in relation to VS could help prevent injury to the nerve during the surgery. In this study, we evaluate the accuracy of diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) for preoperative identification of facial nerve. Methods : We prospectively collected data from 11 patients with VS, who underwent preoperative DTT for facial nerve. Imaging results were correlated with intraoperative findings. Postoperative DTT was performed at postoperative 3 month. Facial nerve function was clinically evaluated according to the House-Brackmann (HB) facial nerve grading system. Results : Facial nerve courses on preoperative tractography were entirely correlated with intraoperative findings in all patients. Facial nerve was located on the anterior of the tumor surface in 5 cases, on anteroinferior in 3 cases, on anterosuperior in 2 cases, and on posteroinferior in 1 case. In postoperative facial nerve tractography, preservation of facial nerve was confirmed in all patients. No patient had severe facial paralysis at postoperative one year. Conclusion : This study shows that DTT for preoperative identification of facial nerve in VS surgery could be a very accurate and useful radiological method and could help to improve facial nerve preservation.

  • The spectroscopic characteristics of the diffusion of beryllium into sapphire are investigated by UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopy. The $Be^{2+}$ diffused samples are observed in an immersion filled with methylene iodide. The blue colors were fainteddue tochanges of iron's electrovalence ($Fe^{2+}$${\rightarrow}$$Fe^{3+}$) after heat treatment in an oxidation atmosphere and the pink color appeared due to $Cr^{3+}$ in case of violet sapphire. The blue sapphire containing light brown showed yellow orange color due to reaction of beryllium with trace elements during the beryllium diffusion. From analysis of immersion filled with methylene iodide, we could demonstrate to show yellow orange with concentrated color in the rim of samples. Also, there were some changes to the pre-existed inclusions.

  • Thin films of the Au/Cr, Au/Ni/Cr and Au/Pd/Cr systems were deposited on alumina substrates at ambient temperature and $250^{\circ}C$ in a high-vacuum resistance heating evaporator and annealed at $300^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in air, respectively. The film thicknesses of Au, Ni(or pd), and Cr were $1000{\AA}$, $300{\AA}$, and $50{\AA}$, respectively. The substrate temperature during deposition and the post-deposition annealing temperature affected the sheet resistance of thin-films due to the inter-diffusion of each layer. As a result of Auger depth profile analysis, in the Au/Cr system Cr already diffused out to Au surface during deposition at the substrate temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ and Au distribution changed after heat treatment. In the Au/Ni/Cr and Au/Pd/Cr systems, diffusion phenomena of Ni and Pd were found and especially Ni (approximately 45 at.%) diffused out to Au surface and oxidized.

  • It is shown that the Shanks sequence $E_{k}$-transformation and the conventional extrapolation method are theoretically related. The $E_1$$^2$-transformation method is then applied for the multigroup diffusion problems. The diffusion code, CITATION, is modified for this study and the computing time is compared for each iteration tactics. The Equipose method, in which only sing1e inner iteration for each energy group is carried for an outer iteration, has been known as the fastest iteration method. However, in the case of 3-group problems, the proposed method, in which the number of inner iteration for the fast and thermal group is 2 and 1 respectively, gives better convergency than the Equipose method by about 12%. The double extrapolation method results in faster computing time than the single extrapolation method without computing storage problem. It is, however, to note that this method is verified only for a two-group treatment.t.

  • Velocity gradient, G, a measure of the average velocity gradient in the fluid has been applied for complete mixing of chemicals in mechanical mixing devices. G values were calculated by the power input transferred to fluid in turbulent and transient range. Chemical reactions occur so fast that total mass transfer time required for even distribution of the chemicals determine the overall reaction time. The total mass transfer time is composed of the time for complete mixing through the reactor and for diffusion of the chemicals into the eddy. Complete mixing time was calculated by CFD (computer fluid dynamics) and evaluated by tracer tests in 2 liter jars at different rotating speeds. Turbulent range, Reynolds number above 10,000 in regular 2 liter jars occurred at revolution speed above 100 rpm (revolution per minute), while laminar range occurred at revolution speed below 10 rpm. A typical range of rotating speed used in jar tests for water and wastewater treatment was between 10 and 300 rpm, which covered both transient and turbulent range. G values supplied from a commercial jar test apparatus showed big difference from those calculated with power number specially in turbulent range. Diffusion time through eddy decreased 1.5 power-law of rotating speed. Complete mixing time determined by pumping number decreased increases in rotating speed. Total mass transfer time, finally, decreases as rotating speed increases, and it becomes 1 sec at rotating speed of 1,000 rpm. Complete mixing times evaluated from tracer tests showed higher than those calculated by power number at higher rotating speed. Complete mixing times, however, calculated by CFD showed similar to those of experimentally evaluated ones.

  • Aluminum induced crystallization of amorphous silicon was attempted by the aluminum substrate. To avoid the layer exchange between silicon and aluminum layer, Ni layer was deposited between these two layers by sputtering. To obtain the bigger grain of the crystalline silicon, wet blasted silica layer was employed as windows between the nickel and a-Si layer. Ni obtained after the annealing treatment at $520^{\circ}C$ was found to be a promising material for the diffusion barrier between silicon and aluminum. One way to obtain bigger grain of crystalline silicon layer applicable to solar cell of higher performance was envisioned in this investigation.

  • To alloy high melting point elements such as boron, ruthenium, and iridium with copper, heat treatment was performed using metal oxides of $B_2O_3$, $RuO_2$, and $IrO_2$ at the temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ in vacuum for 30 minutes. The microstructure analysis of the alloyed sample was confirmed using an optical microscope and FE-SEM. Hardness and trace element analyses were performed using Vickers hardness and WD-XRF, respectively. Diffusion profile analysis was performed using D-SIMS. From the microstructure analysis results, crystal grains were found to have formed with sizes of 2.97 mm. For the copper alloys formed using metal oxides of $B_2O_3$, $RuO_2$, and $IrO_2$ the sizes of the crystal grains were 1.24, 1.77, and 2.23 mm, respectively, while these sizes were smaller than pure copper. From the Vickers hardness results, the hardness of the Ir-copper alloy was found to have increased by a maximum of 2.2 times compared to pure copper. From the trace element analysis, the copper alloy was fabricated with the expected composition. From the diffusion profile analysis results, it can be seen that 0.059 wt%, 0.030 wt%, and 0.114 wt% of B, Ru, and Ir, respectively, were alloyed in the copper, and it led to change the hardness. Therefore, we verified that alloying of high melting point elements is possible at the low temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$.

  • Acinetobacter baumannii is categorized as a red alert pathogen that is increasingly associated with a high mortality rate in infected patients because of its resistance to extensive antibiotics. This study evaluated the antibacterial activities of some essential oils (tee tree, rosemary, and lavender oils) against 18 clinical isolates of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii (MRAB). The carbapenemase screening Hodge test showed that all 20 strains of A. baumannii were resistant to imipenem. The identification of multidrug-resistant microbes was carried out using the VITEK system. The antimicrobial activity of essential oils was tested by a disk diffusion method against MRAB. In the disk diffusion method, tea tree showed the largest increase in inhibition size compared to lavender oil, and rosemary had no antibacterial effect. These results proved the antimicrobial effect of multidrug resistance A. baumannii. Tee tree oil would be a useful alternative natural product for the treatment and prevention of most common human pathogens and MRAB infections. This is expected to be used as an antimicrobial agent, such as hand disinfectant using natural essential oil in the future.
