Treated sewage could enable growth by providing key nutrients or seeding the sediments with enterococci strains that can grow in the environment. This study is to test the hypothesis that the flux of bacteria into the water column is rate-limited by the transfer of bacteria across the sediment/water interface. Two conceptual models are derived for the transfer of bacteria to the water column from the sediment/water interface: convective diffusion of isolated bacteria and resuspension of particle-associated bacteria. The model predictions are directly tested together with field measurements of bacteria and sediment in an effluent-dominated stream where high concentrations of enterococci in this stream originate primarily from growth of the bacteria in stream sediments. The results reveal that high concentrations of enterococci in this stream are transported primarily by resuspension of particle-associated bacteria accumulated at the sediment/water interface, either in the form of bacterial aggregates or in the form of inorganic particles.

The YBaCuO superconducting bulks were prepared by the thermal diffusion process involving the peritectic reaction to investigate the effect on microstructure and superconductivity. All the diffused YBaCuO could be successively separated from superconducting 123 phase by applying the thermal diffusion process. Electromagnetic properties of treated and untreated YBaCuO superconductor were evaluated to investigate the pinning effect. It was confirmed experimentally that a large amount of magnetic flux was trapped in the thermal treated superconducting bulk than that in the untreated one, indicating that the pinning centers of magnetic flux are related closely to the occurrence mechanism of the magnetic effect.
This paper describes recent development activities of the GENESIS code, which is a transport code for heterogeneous three-dimensional geometry, focusing on applications to reactor core analysis. For the treatment of anisotropic scattering, the concept of the simplified Pn method is introduced in order to reduce storage of flux moments. The accuracy of the present method is verified through a benchmark problem. Next, the iteration stability of the GENESIS code for the highly voided condition, which would appear in a severe accident (e.g., design extension) conditions, is discussed. The efficiencies of the coarse mesh finite difference and generalized coarse mesh rebalance acceleration methods are verified with various stabilization techniques. Use of the effective diffusion coefficient and the artificial grid diffusion coefficients are found to be effective to stabilize the acceleration calculation in highly voided conditions.
The Leipzig Wind Profile is generally known as a typical neutral planetary boundary layer flow. But it became clear from the present research that it was not completely neutral but weakly stable. We examined whether we could simulate the Leipzig Wind Profile by using a ($k-{\varepsilon}$) turbulence model including the equation of potential temperature. By solving analytically the Second Moment Closure Model under the assumption of local equilibrium and under the condition of a stratified flow, we expressed the turbulent diffusion coefficients (both momentum and thermal) as functions of flux Richardson number. Our ($k-{\varepsilon}$) turbulence model which included the equation of potential temperature and the turbulent diffusion coefficients varying with flux Richardson number reproduced the Leipzig Wind Profile.
Commercially available continuous glucose sensors require the operation stability for more than two weeks. Typically, the sensor comprises a sensing layer and an over-coating layer for the stable operation inside the body. In the sensing layer, enzymes and mediators are cross-linked together for the effective sensing of the glucose. The over-coating layer limits the flux of glucose and works as a biocompatible layer to the body fluids. Here, we report the simple preparation of the flux-limiting layer by the condensation of polyethyleneimine (PEI), tri-epoxide linker, and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (PTGE). The sensor is constructed by a layer-by-layer drop-coating of the sensing layer containing glucose dehydrogenase and the PEI-derived blocking layer. It is stable for more than 14 days, which is enough for the sensor in the continuous monitor glucose monitoring (CGM) system.
Experiments were performed to determine the thermal (or turbulent) diffusion coefficient (TDC) and to investigate the critical heat flux (CHF) performance in the 5${\times}$5 rod bundle with 5 unheated rods which are supported by Hybrid Mixing Vane. In this study, HFC-134a fluid was used as working fluid and the fluid temperature were measured in the important subchannels. To determine the TDC value, the measured fluid temperatures were compared with the predicted values obtained from the MATRA code. The best optimized value of ${\beta}$ was found to be 0.02 by considering prediction statistics, i.e., average and standard deviations of the differences between the experimental results and code calculations. Using the best optimized value of ${\beta}$ as 0.02, the MATRA code predicts the test results of the fluid temperature within ${\pm}$1.0 % of error. According to the experimental results on CHF of 5 non-heating guide tubes, the case with non-heating guide tube showed a little good performance in terms of CHF.

Tungsten coatings on the graphite (CX-2320) were successfully deposited using the vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) method. An optimum coating procedure was developed and coating thicknesses of $409{\mu}m$ (without an interlayer) and $378{\mu}m$ (with an interlayer) were obtained with no cracks and no signs of delamination. The mechanical characteristics and microstructure of the tungsten coating layers were investigated using a Vickers hardness tester, FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The effect of a titanium interlayer on the properties of the tungsten coating was investigated. It was shown that the titanium interlayer prevented the diffusion of carbon to the tungsten layer, thereby suppressing the formation of tungsten carbide. Vickers hardness data yielded values that were 62.5 ~ 80.46% of those for bulk tungsten, indicating that tungsten coatings on graphite can be utilized as a plasma-facing material. High heat flux tests were performed by using thermal plasma with a maximum flux of $10MW/^2$. Vickers hardness after the heat flux test is performed to see a change in the mechanical properties. The formationof a tungsten carbide and the effect of the titanium interlayer for the diffusion barrier are investigated by using energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS).

The analysis of flux distribution under stead-state in large power reactors with assymetry reactivity insertions requires the use of three-dimensional diffusion calculations. For the purpose, consistently formulated modern nodal methods based on higher order interface techniques have become popular tools for flux distributions in large commercial nuclear reactors. Among the earlier developments, the nodal Green's function method obtains its nodal interface equation from the transverse-integrated integral diffusion equation using a finite-medium Green's function. In this method, the outgoing current from a node surface is formulated as a response of the incoming currents and the spatially integrated neutron source within the same node. The well-known nodal expansion method is also based on an interface partial current formulation. Nodal methods high-level interface variables, i.e., interface net current and flux, may be more computationally efficient than the nodal Green's function method because they have one fewer unknown per interface. The Analytic Nodal Method(ANM), which can be classified as an interface net current technique and, was faster in solving some standard benchmark problems than the other two methods.(omitted)

In this study, an analytical model has been developed to predict the build-up of heat field due to a point heat source in the presence of sharp cross-flow depth change. The model has been applied to investigate the effect of the depth change and flow pattern on the heat field. Model results show that, when there is a sharp depth change in cross-flow direction, the heat transport across the boundary of the depth change is enhanced or diminished according to the increasing or decreasing of the horizontal diffusion flux. Including residual components as well as tidal currents give rise to reduce the effect of the horizontal diffusion on the heat transport because of increasing the advection of heat.
We have studied the effect of polarity, current density, current duration, crosslinking density, swelling ratio, and permeation enhancers on the transdermal flux of ketoprofen from acrylamide hydrogel. Hydrogel was prepared by free radical crosslinking polymerization of acrylamide. Drug loading was made just before transport experiment by soaking the hydrogel in solution containing drug. In vitro flux study using hairless mouse skin was performed at $36.5^{\circ}C$ using side-by-side diffusion cell, and the drug was analysed using HPLC/UV system. The result showed that, compared to passive flux, the total amount of drug transported increased about 18 folds by the application of $0.4\;mA/cm^2$ cathodal current. Anodal delivery with same current density also increased the total amount of drug transported about 13 folds. It seemed that the increase in flux was due to the electrorepulsion and the increase in passive permeability of the skin by the current application. Flux increased as current density, the duration of current application and loading amount (swelling duration) increased. As the cross linking density of the hydrogel increased, flux clearly decreased. The effect of hydrophilic enhancers (urea, N-methyl pyrrolidone, Tween 20) and some hydrophobic enhancers (propylene glycol monolaurate and isopropyl myristate) was minimal. However, about 3 folds increase in flux was observed when 5% oleic acid was used. Overall, these results provide some useful information on the design of an optimized iontophoretic delivery system of ketoprofen.
