  • In this paper, we present the development of an antenna specialized for the maritime collision avoidance system. This antenna is configured as the dielectric rod partially embedded in the metal cavity to reduce the overall size, simultaneously assuring the mechanical sturdiness against the challenging oceanic weather conditions. More importantly, the design has been carefully done to meet the requirements on the radiation pattern(with the slope < 5 dB/deg in the elevation(E-plane), circular in the azimuth) suitable to receiving the reflected signals from the other objects on the sea. To find the optimal design parameters, the genetic algorithm has been used to meet the goals of the desired return loss and pattern. This design methodology is validated by the good agreement between the calculation and measurement.

  • Modal properties of guided waves along circular dispersive double negative (DNG) index metamaterial rod waveguides are numerically investigated. Identical forms of dispersive dielectric and magnetic material constants are used for simplicity. For degenerated azimuthally symmetric mode, a multimode region, a single mode region, a band gap region and a forbidden region are found which cannot be observed in the case of the conventional dielectric rod waveguide. As the normalized frequency goes down, discrete guided modes are continuously generated, which is a reverse property of conventional dielectric rod waveguide. Also, there are high-frequency cutoffs, which have been generally examined in dispersive circular geometries such as a plasma column or a plasma Goubau line. In the single mode region, both the low- and high-frequency cutoffs are existed where the propagation constants are continued between the guided oscillating and surface modes.

  • Numerical solutions to complex characteristic equations are quite often required to solve electromagnetic wave problems. In general, two traditional complex root search algorithms, the Newton-Raphson method and the Muller method, are used to produce such solutions. However, when utilizing these two methods, the choice of the initial iteration value is very sensitive, otherwise, the iteration can fail to converge into a solution. Thus, as an alternative approach, where the selection of the initial iteration value is more relaxed and the computation speed is high, Davidenko's method is used to determine accurate complex propagation constants for leaky circular symmetric modes in circular dielectric rod waveguides. Based on a precise determination of the complex propagation constants, the leaky mode characteristics of several lower-order circular symmetric modes are then numerically analyzed. In addition, no modification of the characteristic equation is required for the application of Davidenko's method.

  • This paper discusses the resonant characteristics, such as the resonant frequencies and Q factors, as well as tuning methods of the resonant frequency of the triple-mode dielectric resonators, for their possible application to compact bandpass filters for mobile communication systems. The resonators include spheres and cylindrical rods that can be applied to compact bandpass filters. These high Q ceramic resonators can replace the conventional coaxial type resonators, which are large sized and also have relatively low Q values. Both simulated and measured results show that the Q values of the sphere and rod reach 27,000 and 24,000, respectively. Decoupling of degenerate modes is also briefly discussed.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate FRP rod for aging, which exposed to salt water and pure at elevated temperature. Dielectric constant and tan .delta. on time and frequency domain were tested to observe how rapidly the FRP rod aged. Dielectric constants of FRP rods with treating time were slightly increased. That of FRP rods with frequency, However, showed strongly the effects of large relaxation time estimated from interfacial polarization a or ionic. It is obvious that absorbed water affects to dielectric and electric properties of FRP with increasing the treating time.

  • This paper describes measurement of relative permittivity of illite found in young-dong area. A measurement of relative permittivity of illite used to cylindrical cavity resonators with moveable cap. A concentric dielectric-rod inserted cylindrical cavity resonator and an exact field representation of travelling wave mode are introduced for measurement of relative permittivity. The exact electromagnetic fields in cylindrical cavity with concentric dielectric rod is analysed. A relative permittivity of dielectric in cavity is calculated by analyzing the characteristic equation. The characteristic equation is solved by using the ContourPlot graph of Mathematica. We know that the field representation of travelling mode is exact. As a result, relative permittivity of dielectric materials were 7.820 at sample-1 and 7.894 at sample-2.

  • Measurement factors for the dielectric properties of low dielectric loss materials (tan${\dalta}{\le}10^{-4}$) were investigated using the dielectric rod resonator method. It was shown that the relative conductivity (${\sigma}_{r}$) should be controlled within a 5% to obtain the standard deviations of less than 0.07 for permittivity .epsilon.r and 0.06${\times}10^{-4}$ for tan.delta.respectively. Surface resistivity (R$_s$) could be reduced when the surface roughness of parallelled conducting plate was less than 0.07 .mu.m. Measurement error for the permittivity was $\pm$0.02% independent of probe loop size, whereas the error in Q value was reduced with the decrease in probe loop size and also with the increase in the absolute values of Q. Reliable Q values were determined with the probe loop size of less than 4mm. The accurate for the distance between the measuring probe loop and the sample could be obtained when the insertion loss of resonant frequency ranged -15dB - -30dB.

  • The resonant frequency of dielectric rod resonator can be calculated very accurately by means of the concept of electric and magnetic walls from the symmetry. But in a real situation, when the supporter is placed in the cavity, asymmetry appears due to the supporter and its dielectric constant. Then we need research into the resonance characteristic of asymmetric dielectric resonator. In this paper, for the dielectric rod resonator which is placed in the asymmetric position in the conducting cavity, the equation for resonance characteristic was derived and the resonant frequency was calculated with the eigenfunction expansion method. We found that the calculated resonant frequency is very accurate when it was compared with the experimental result and that asymmetry affects the resonant frequency more in TM mode than in TE or in hybrid mode.

  • Leaky modes on a circular dielectric rod are investigated from the precisely determined normalized complex propagation constants using Davidenko's complex root finding technique. Below the cutoff frequency of the guided mode, distinct frequency regions that have unique properties are observed, such as nonphysical region, antenna mode region, reactive mode region, and spectral gap region.

  • This paper describes measurement method of dielectric properties of dielectric materials using cylindrical cavity resonator's. Dielectric properties of concern here are relative permittivity, loss- tangent, quality factor and so on. An analysis of $TE_{011}$mode in dielectric properties of concentric dielectric-rod inserted cylindrical cavity resonator is presented. The frequency variation by the air gap at $TE_{011}$ mode turns out to be the least sensitive. A technique using a $TE_{011}$ mode of concentric dielectric-rod inserted cylindrical cavity resonator and an exact field representation of neo non-decaying mode are introduced for measurement of dielectric properties.
