The reason of lowering the dielectric constant of SiOC film was studied using parameters obtained from C-V measurement and refractive index. SiOC film was formed by the force of ionic bonding during the recombination of dissociated gases. Generally, the dielectric constant was obtained from the square of the refractive index or C-V measurement using the metal/insulator/Si structure. The dielectric constant consists of the ionic and electronic elements. It was researched about the dielectric constant of SiOC film using the average of the ionic and electronic elements. The dielectric constant decreased after annealing process. As deposited films trended toward the dielectric constant consisted of most ionic elements, on the other hand, annealed films mostly consisted of electronic elements. Because the effect of ionic elements reduced after annealing. Consequently, it was found that the electronic effect of SiOC film increased and the ionic effect of SiOC film decreased by the after-annealing.
To evaluate the applicability of dielectric constant measurement method on the geoenvironmental investigation of subsurface contaminated by landfill leachate, the analysis on dielectric characteristics of sand containing contaminated pore water by landfill leachate was performed. The separate real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant were investigated in the frequency range of 75kHz to 12MHz. The real part of dielectric constant increased at the lower frequency wherea the real part of dielectric constant decreased at the higher frequency as the concentration of leachate increased. These results can be explained by the frequency dependence of space charge polarization and orientation polarization. The imaginary part of dielectric constant on the contaminated sand with leachate increased with their concentration for whole frequency range. These results are caused by the increase of energy loss due to the enhancement of conduction in soil with leachate concentration. The results in this study indicate that the dielectric constant measurement method has potential in evaluating the contaminated soil and pore water by landfill leachate.

A new method is proposed for the on-line measurement of the fiber orientation of sheet materials. The measurement of fiber orientation is very important in manufacturing paper sheets, non-woven fabrics, and glass sheets, because fiber orientation strongly affects product properties represented by, for example, dimensional stability of paper. A method developed in this research utilizes anisotropy of dielectric constants of sheet materials as a key characteristic to determine the fiber orientation. The new on-line sensor, consisting of 5 microwave dielectric resonators set in different directions, was designed to detect the fiber orientation while paper is running with high speed on a paper machine. This sensor can determine the direction and the degree of fiber orientation from the measured direction of the maximal dielectric constant and its variation, respectively. The fundamental performance of this system was examined by the static measurement of printing grade paper, which gave a satisfactory result. Then, the dynamic measurements were done at a speed of 1,000 m/min by using a high-speed test-coating machine.

A cavity perturbation technique is employed to determine the dielectric property of thin samples. Substrates in microwave integrated circuits are fabricated in sheet form and are expected to have a dielectric constant less than 10 and a dielectric loss better than 10**-3. This research aimed to determine both dielectric constant and dielectric loss with good accuracy. The tecynique makes use of thin circular disk samples placed in a right circular cylindrical cavity. The accuracy of measurements is within \ulcorner% for dielectric constnat and 3x10**-4 for dielectric loss.

The dielectric properties of cereal grains such as short-grain rough rice, brown rice and barley with various moisture contents were determined by measuring the attenuation and phase shift of the microwave signal trough the grain samples at 9.5GHz. The microwave free-space transmission measurement system consisted of sample holder, horn antenna and network analyzer. Dielectric constant and loss factor of grain samples increased with moisture content and bulk density and agreed well with previous research results. Moisture density, which is defined as the product of moisture content and bulk density, was proposed as a bulk density and variety compensation factor. The technique for measurement of dielectric properties based on free-space transmission may be useful for other particulate materials.
In this study, the measurements of the dielectric constants of soil at 900 MHz and 1 GHz were made to relate those properties to the moisture content of the soil. This study's intention was to use the relationship between the dielectric constant and the moisture content to develop a landslide prediction system. By monitoring the change of the moisture content within the soil using ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems in the field, the possibility of a landslide is expected to be detected. To establish a database for the dielectric constants and the moisture content, the measurements of soil samples were made using both an open-ended dielectric coaxial probe and the GPR. Based on the measurement results, correlations between the GPR and reflector for each frequency at 900 MHz and 1 GHz were found for the dielectric constants and the moisture content. Finally, the mechanism of the measurement device to be implemented in the field is suggested.

Various methods, such as geophysical exploration, temperature measurement, and fiber optics, have been developed for detecting the seepage at a dam. In this study, in order to investigate the possibility of leakage detection using dielectric constant of FDR sensor, a physical model consisting of weak and no-weak zones is fabricated and the sensors for dielectric constant, temperature and pore water pressure measurements are installed. As a leakage happens, the dielectric constant changes more rapidly through a weak zone than no-weak zone. In addition, comparing three factors (dielectric constant, temperature, and pore water pressure), the response of dielectric constant to seepage is fast and it is easily recognized even at the end measurement point. Considering these features, it is concluded that it could be possible to cope with the leakage detection quickly and efficiently if the dielectric constant is measured at the downstream slope of a dam.

The cross capacitor electrode system applied Thompson-Lampard theorem for precise and accurate measurement of dielectric constants is studied in this study. The capacitance derived from cross capacitor is calculated by the equation of ($C=\frac{{\epsilon}ln2}{\pi}{\cdot}$ effectivelength of electrode) which is very different from the equation of capacitance derived from parallel plate capacitor. From above mentioned reason, the capacitance measurement uncertainty of cross capacitor can be reduced then that of the parallel plate capacitor. the measurement dielectric constant measured by cross capacitor electrode method is one order more accurate and precise than that of 3-electrode method.
Dielectric measurement on binary mixtures of Allyl chloride (ALC) with 2-Pentanone (2-PE) and 2-Hexanone (2-HE) has been carried out over the entire concentration range using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique at various temperatures in microwave frequency range of 10 MHz to 10 GHz. The static dielectric constant, excess static dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}^E_S$), effective Kirkwood correlation factor ($g^{eff}$) of binary mixtures over entire concentration range were determined to study the effect of increasing alkyl group of ketones on hetero molecular interaction. It was found that magnitude of excess static dielectric constant of mixtures increases with increase of alky group of ketones. The study reveals that the dipole moment of Allyl chloride in mixture have antiparallelism tendency where as 2-pentanone and 2-hexanone have parallelism tendency. Excess static dielectric constant is also fitted to Redlich-Kister equation to get information about rates of multimers formation.

A free space transmission method using standard gain horn antennas in the frequency range from 9.0 to 10.5GHz is applied to determine the dielectric properties of grain such as rough rice ,brown rice and barley. The dielectric constant and loss factor, which depend on the moisture content of the wetted grain are obtained from the measured attenuation and phase shift by vector network analyzer. The moisture content of grain varied from 11 to 25% based on this wetted condition. The measured values of dielectric constants as a function of moisture density are compared with values of those obtained using he predicted model for estimating dielectric constants of grain. The effect of density fluctuation, high is an important parameter governing the dielectric properties of grain, on the dielectric constant and loss factor is presented. A new density-independent model in terms of measured attenuation an moisture density is proposed of reducing the effects of density fluctuation on the moisture content measurement.
