Recent common-rail injector of a diesel engine needs more smaller nozzle hole to meet the stringent emission regulation. But, small nozzle hole diameter can cause nozzle coking which is occurred due to the deposits of post-combustion products. Nozzle coking has a negative effect on the performance of fuel injector because it obstructs the fuel flow inside a nozzle hole. In this study DFSS (Design for six sigma) method was applied to find the effect of nozzle design parameter on nozzle coking. Total 9 injector samples were chosen and tested at diesel engine. The results show that nozzle hole diameter and K-factor have more effect on nozzle coking than A-mass and hole length. Large hole diameter and A-mass, small hole length and K-factor give more positive performance on nozzle coking in these experimental conditions. But, a performance about nozzle coking and exhaust gas emission shows the opposite tendency. Further study is needed to find the relation between nozzle coking and emission characteristic for the optimization of injector nozzle design.
The intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole diesel nozzle with a 2-spring nozzle holder were investigated experimentally. Without changing the total orifice exit area, the hole number of the multi-hole nozzle varied from 3 (d$\_$n/=0.42 mm) to 5 (d$\_$n/=0.32 mm). The time-resolved droplet diameters of the spray including the SMD (Saute. mean diameter) and the AMD (arithmetic mean diameter), injected intormittently from the multi-hole nozzles into still ambient ai., were measured by using a 2-D PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyze.). The 5-hole nozzle spray shows the smaller spray cone angle, the decreased SMD distributions and the small difference between the SMD and the AMD, compared with that of the 3-hole nozzle spray. From the SMD distributions with the radial distance, the spray structure can be classified into the three regions : (a) the inner region showing the high SMD distribution , (b) the mixing flow region where the shea. flow structure would be constructed : and (c) the outer region formed through the disintegration processes of the spray inner region and composed of fine droplets. Through the SMD distributions along the spray centerline, it reveals that the SMD decreases rapidly after showing the maximum value in the vicinity of the nozzle tip. The SMD remains the constant value near the Z/d$\_$n/=166 and 156.3 for the 3-hole and 5-hole nozzles, which illustrate that the disintegration processes of the 5-hole nozzle spray proceed more rapidly than that of the 3-hole nozzle spray.
The present study was carried out in order to develope a seven-hole pressure probe which is able to measure high flow angles. The seven-hole pressure probe is a non-nulling, directional velocity probe used for measuring three dimensional flow that having high flow angles. A 4 mm diameter seven-hole conical pressure probe was manufactured with a cone angle of 70$^{\circ}$. The probe was comprised of seven 1 mm diameter stainless steel tubes packed close together and fitted into an outer stainless steel sleeve. The calibration procedure is based on the use of the Callington's polynomial curve-fit method. The validity of the seven-hole conical pressure probe is demonstrated by comparisons with hot-wire data.
Applications of the deep hole drilling process can be found in many industries ranging from large aerospace manufacturer to small tool and die shop. Deep hole drilling process with small diameter generally requires high quality and accuracy. But problems which may arise or result from the deep hole drilling process include drill breakage, the generation of a finished part surface which does not satisfy required quality, and process instability. To guaranty the required machining quality and accuracy, it is important to understand and improve the deep hole drilling process. In this study, deep hole drilling experiments using tingle edge drill with small diameter under 2mm have been carried out for difficult to cut materials such as C42CrMo4 and C45pb and the experimental results were analyzed. Feed force and torque versus feed showed linear relationship in both materials. The feed force and torque are decreased as cutting speed is increased but the trends are not uniform in C42CrMo4.
This paper describes performance enhancement of a fuel cell's blower by controlling flow path. Different duct diameter at the inlet and outlet of the blower is selected for reducing blower noise level and input power. Hole diameter and the number of hole at the check valve are tested to reduce the input power of the blower. Two types of blower, fuel pressurized blower and cathode blower, are considered in the present study. Throughout experimental measurements of the test blowers, it is found that duct diameter is effective to reduce noise level and input power in the fuel cell blower. Noise reduction due to the optimal duct diameter at the outlet is more effective when flow rate is relatively large. That is, cathode blower has larger noise reduction compared to fuel pressurized blower because of larger flower rate. Input power of the blower can be reduced by controlling the hole diameter and the number of hole at the check valve.
A simplified experiment was performed to figure out the atomization characteristics of rice-bran oil which it is highly viscous liquid by applying ultrasonic energy. A spray system, an ultrasonic system, and three kinds of hole-type nozzles(hole diameter: 0.31, 0.34, 0.37mm) were manufactured. To investigate the effects of ultrasonic energy on the atomization of a highly viscous liquid, a phase doppler particle analyzer was used for measurement and calculation of spray droplets data. Nozzle opening pressures were chosen of 3 levels, i.e, 16, 20, and 24MPa. As a result, it could be concluded that the ultrasonic energy was effective to improve the spray atomization when it applied to the fuel by means of 3 different nozzles because of the effects of the liquid fuel cavitation and relaxation between molecules caused by ultrasonic energy. The improvement rate of the spray atomization by the ultrasonic method compared with the conventional spray increased about 15% in the case of hole type nozzles. By increasing of the nozzle opening pressure and decreasing of the hole diameter, the atomization of spray droplets was improved.
Two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter, and initial crossflow passes between the plates. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10 mm, and the Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effect of crossflow, the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.2 to 2 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. With the initial crossflow, the heat/mass transfer rates on the effusion (target) plate decrease as the velocity of crossflow increases, since the crossflow induces the locally low transfer regions formed at the mid-way between the effusion holes. However, the impingement/effusion cooling with crossflow presents higher heat/mass transfer rates than the array jet impingement cooling with the same initial crossflow.
Microholes with high aspect ratio are required in microstructures. Among various methods for producing the microhole, micro electrical discharge machining (MEDM) is very effective and useful process. But, it is difficult to machine the high aspect ratio holes below $100\;{\mu}m$ in diameter because machining condition becomes unstable due to bad removal of debris at deep hole. In this paper, ultrasonic vibration is applied to MEDM work fluid to make a high aspect ratio micro hole. It is shown that the vibration is effective in circulating the debris and increasing the machining rate. As a result, produced was a micro hole with $92\;{\mu}m$ entrance diameter, $81\;{\mu}m$ exit diameter and aspect ratio 23.
many plumbing system are needed in the ceiling of the building as it becomes advanced more and more. This leads to make effective space between ceiling level and slab less. Also, piping system is not suitably arranged and operated if it is bent around the columns which they are a lot. But this system can be more effective if it passes through the columns directly. Most people think that those columns should not be damaged with such as holes. But actually this is existed in a hotel building in switzerland. This study is to fing out how much capacity the columns become damaged and low using model size of $20cm{\times}30cm$ rectangular section, and 160cm long, in the structural test. it's compressive strength is focused on $240kg/cm^{2}$ design strength, commonly used in korea. Compressive test for them was done at Hanyang University using UTM one thousand tone(1000t) capacity. Variable numbers for the study are one hole of dia 3cm with distance 20cm or 40cm, two holes of dia 3cm with 20cm and 40cm distance, one hole of dia 5cm with distance 20cm and 40cm, two holes of dia 5cm with 20cm and 40cm distance, me eccentric hole with 20cm and 40cm distance, Normal(without hole). two test specimens of each variable are made for the test. ED5H20 capacity was 16.7% decreased, compared to normal one. While ED5H40 distant 40cm from the end of column top showed 19.5% capacity decrease, compared to normal one. Strain of ED5H20 diameter 5cm, in distance of 20cm form the top of the column was less 5% than the one of diameter 3cm. Finally, conclusions are that in case of hole diameter 3cm, located at 20cm from the end of the column top, capacity was decreased down to 3, percent only compared to the same diameter hole with 20cm distant from the end of it.
Wooden dowels are commonly used to join the particleboard members together in many types of structures, But little information is available concerning their holding properties in domestic particleboard. This study was performed to determine the withdrawal loads and strengths on the effect of diameter of dowel and hole clearance. The test block was manufactured from 15 mm thick domestic particleboard. The dowel was manufactured 6, 8 and 10 mm diameters from korean castanea, korean pine and tuliptree. Research reported here indicates that withdrawal loads increase, but withdrawal strengths decrease, as the dowel diameter increases. This study also indicates that dowel withholding load and strength for particleboard less decrease than those for domestic wood as a hole clearance decreases.
