  • This paper makes a quantitative analysis of the diachronic evolution of ancient Chinese vocabulary by constructing and counting a large-scale rough annotated corpus. The texts from Si Ku Quan Shu (a collection of Chinese ancient books) are automatically segmented to obtain ancient Chinese vocabulary with time information, which is used to the statistics on word frequency, standardized type/token ratio and proportion of monosyllabic words and dissyllabic words. Through data analysis, this study has the following four findings. Firstly, the high-frequency words in ancient Chinese are stable to a certain extent. Secondly, there is no obvious dissyllabic trend in ancient Chinese vocabulary. Moreover, the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589 AD) and Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD) are probably the two periods with the most abundant vocabulary in ancient Chinese. Finally, the unique words with high frequency in each dynasty are mainly official titles with real power. These findings break away from qualitative methods used in traditional researches on Chinese language history and instead uses quantitative methods to draw macroscopic conclusions from large-scale corpus.

  • This study investigated the complex meanings of the concept of place and their periodical changes in the Korean architectural discourse. For that, the study surveyed almost every articles in majour 3 Korean architectural magazines during around 1990s, when the Korean architects and theorists concerned the 'place' as an alternative of the modernists' 'space'. 60 selected articles were organized in a table in a chronological order together with their keywords and category codes. The 8 categories reflecting 8 issues of 'place' were suggested in the study after the analysis of selected articles' contents. The categories were structured by two axes which were 4-grade scale axis influences by C. Norberg-Schultz' approach, and 'architecture-human' axis following the 'structure-action' division by A. Giddens. After the analysis of the diachronic and synchronic tables, the study tried to establish a structure model of the concept of place in Korean architectural context, which consisted of architectural terms such as environment, social system, context, identity, landscape, community, Materiality, and residence. This final result could be useful for both architects and theorists who might try to apply the idea of 'place' without erstwhile confusion on their design or research by examining the detailed contents of the concept.

  • The purpose of this article is to investigate the forms and styles of pond at private housing in terms of diachronically influencing characteristics in the Choson Dynasty. From various literatures and records, we have selected 73 cases of pond. We have analyzed the types of pond based on square type, squared type with islets, and modified types and found the following results: 1) Chronically, shapes of pond had been chanced from the three prototypes into their features of deducting side or edge, adding a triangular or trapezoid shape, and installing more islets, and replaced their figures with gradually progressive from side having a straight lined shape to a curved one. 2) As for characteristics of arranging ponds, we found three patterns of arrangement - the juxtaposition with a similar shape of pond, juxtaposition with a different shape of pond, and the juxtaposition with a pond having different topological level in the light of the relation with a stream and a pond. We can conclude the two changed patterns of ponds at private residence in Choson Dynasty that the one had been transformed shapes of pond with sides of pond, and the others had been transformed juxtaposition with either a stream or a natural stream. From this research we can find an important implications in understanding patterns and types of garden in the Choson Dynasty from exploratory approach and in the future the relationship between topographical characteristics of private residence and Confucian ideas, and shapes of pond is needed to be examined in explanatory manner.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain the meanings and uses of the English auxiliaries SHALL/WILL. The complexity of modern usage of SHALL/WILL has been one of the most disputable themes of traditional English grammar. The paper purported to address the study and analysis of diachronic and synchronic approach to the two auxiliaries. A general view of the figures of Fries'(1925) survey was added for further investigation. The results of the study showed that these auxiliaries express some of various modal meanings associated with the volitional or emotional attitude of the speaker without implying futurity. The findings also suggested that the use of SHALL in present-day English is restricted to non-volitional future with the first person but the practice of this use is also diminished by the expansion of the use of WILL, and the original meaning of WILL, 'to desire or wish', has generally been replaced by other verbs or modal forms. But sentences which seem to indicate futurity are often tinged with modal senses. Therefore, WILL/SHALL should be considered to act either as tense auxiliary or as modal auxiliary depending on situational contexts in which it occurs.

  • This research explores diachronic fashion design trends through a structure analysis of a connection network based on fashion show concepts implemented by modern fashion designers from S/S 2009 to F/W 2013. The findings from this research are as follows. First, four categories affect the inspiration and thinking of design: the experience of the designer, social atmosphere and phenomena, natural sensitivity (or formative characteristics of natural objects), and the influence and quality of other fields. Second, in cases where the designers' experiences influenced design inspiration and thinking, designers express personal memories with keywords like high school, grandmother's closet, prom, beauty and the beast, heritage, past, and reminiscence through design elements such as lines, silhouettes, materials, and colors. Third, the representative example of the social atmosphere and phenomena that influenced design inspiration and thinking was the 2008 Global Financial Crisis that reflected the social climate through design concepts of keywords such as Recession, Black, Economy, US, Depression, Gray, Dark Age, White and New York. Fourth, inspired by nature and the formative characteristics in design, the designers employed ornamental elements to collections and design concepts that focused on nature words connected to light, sun, wild, dirt, rock, moss, and trees. Fifth, the designers took their ideas from different fields of personal interest in the arts, science and humanities (sports, architecture, sculpture, painting, and literature) that were decisive in determining materials, design colors and silhouettes. The theme of architecture was analyzed as a central element that had an ongoing impact on the concepts of designers.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare between professionalism in medical field(doctor) and architectural design field(architect) in Korea through synchronic and diachronic analysis, with basic requirement of expertise and systemicity, attitude requirement of the publicness, and structural requirement of exclusiveness and autonomy. The medical professionalism adapted by Korean government in the early period of modernization evolved from Western's professional expertise is highly divided as economy grew and society changed. In comparison, architecture was divided into architecture, urbanism, landscape, and interior architecture. Additionally, architectural field was subdivided with architectural design, engineering, construction, structure, and facilities, but architectural design focused on generalized education and practice system. From the systematical point of view, architectural design field has changed profoundly from architectural engineering as 5 year undergraduate educational system was introduced with Korean architectural accreditation. The publicness is approved through health service in medical field and safety and the public domain in architectural design field, but in reality the professionals are viewed as economic interest groups. Hence, the professionalism in both fields is required to reinforce ideology and ethics, and to practice concrete measures for publicness. Compared with the unified organization of medical field, architectural design professionalism faces various difficulties in unifying the organization, such as internal competition caused by tightened architect's requirements, along with external problems from architectural design permission demands of construction companies. In medical and architectural design professionalism, with the appearance of consumerism and stricter governmental regulations, the autonomy is weakened. From the result of comparative analysis, Korean medical field became extremely subdivided and specialized in each department, therefore integration of each disease and establishment of centers are proposed as solutions. By contrast, the reinforcement of expertise in architectural design professionalism might be necessary to strengthen autonomy caused by governmental restriction, and to form architectural culture and secure public architecture.

  • The fashion industry in Korea has grown into a core sector that contributes to the development of national industries, but it has shown negative growth due to the advent of a low-growth era. This study aims to explore core texts related to variable factors affecting the apparel industry in Korea (and the environmental change factors of apparel companies) by using network analysis from a diachronic point of view. In addition, we discuss the implications of enhancing the value of fashion industries in Korea based on articles in fashion newspapers over five years. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, as a suggestion for political and economic aspects, the government should minimize the damage caused by political influence by presenting new policies, or by communicating about the practical aspects of geopolitical issues and changes linked to the fashion industry. Second, as a suggestion of socio-cultural aspects, it is necessary to reduce uncertainty about the future by establishing a strategic system through cooperation with institutions that can predict future directions. Third, as a suggestion for management changes in the apparel industry, apparel companies in Korea should recognize the importance of consciousness of promoting development for a better society from coexistence, rather than corporate profit.
