Exploring the Characteristics of STEAM Program Developed by Docents and its educational impact in the Natural History Museum

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of STEAM program developed and implemented by two docents and its educational impact for the use of natural history museum. Two docents developed this program with the help of science educators who ran five times of workshop during five months. The STEAM program implemented in the natural history museum demonstrated the following characteristics. The exhibitions in museum were reached by visitors only for learning science concepts (S) out of five components in STEAM. The other components, T (technology) and E (engineering), were delivered through lectures in the room, not exhibition hall. M (Mathematics)was achieved by guessing the animal's size, or calculating the walking or running speed with the clue of foot prints. The three phases of STEAM program (presentation of context, creatively design the investigation, and emotional touch) were explicitly implemented but partially successful. Two docents participating in this study responded that they formed new or extended the understandings about STEAM education, but they had the difficulties in implementing STEAM program for various type of visitors. All visitors who participated in this study displayed the favorable responses in educational impact by STEAM program in natural history museum. The heavier emphasis on E and T of STEAM program is recommended through community-based learning. In addition, educator professional program through which docents can bridge theory into practice is suggested for revitalization of STEAM education.

초등학생 비만관리프로그램 개발을 위한 예비연구 - Keller의 동기이론을 중심으로 - (Development of an Obesity Management Program for Elementary School Children - Based on Keller's Motivation Theory -)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an effective obesity management program for elementary school children, based on the motivation theory. Method: This study was a methodological study. A child obesity management program, based on the motivation theory was developed, a web site was made and children with obesity participated in the internet program. After the children finished the program, they evaluated the clinical validity of the program. The clinical validity was tested from Jun 12 to 16, 2006. The participants were 6 students. The evaluation tool was Keller's IMMS(Instructional Material Motivation Survey). Data were evaluated using $means{\pm}SD$ for four major components A,R,C,S (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction), based on ARCS in the motivation theory. Results: The program developed in this study was named 'ARCS children obesity escape', and the URL is 'http://www.119kid.co.kr'. Regarding the four components of ARCS, the overall reaction of participants showed that they were very highly motivated by this program. Conclusion: Utilizing the ARCS motivation strategies for solving obesity problems for children is an effective method to motivate the management of obesity, and can increase achievement motivation, attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction with the management of obesity. Thus, the program developed in this study is expected to reduce obesity in children, and become an important guide for obesity management and health improvement for children.

과학수사 프로그램이 초등 영재의 과학 창의적 문제해결력에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Forensic Science Program on Scientific Creative Problem-Solving Abilities of Gifted Students in Elementary School)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop forensic science program for the improvement of scientific creative problem-solving abilities in gifted elementary-school students. A program that consists of six sessions (18 hours) is developed in accordance with the CPS model, which has been already proven effective for the improvement of creative problem-solving abilities. This program was applied to sixth-grade 18 gifted students in an elementary school in Gyeonggi province. Examinations of scientific creative problem-solving abilities were performed before and after applying the program in order to determine its effect on gifted elementary students. A qualitative analysis of students' activity sheets, peer assessment and teacher's class journal was made in order to examine the process of improvement of students' scientific creative problem-solving abilities. The results of this study are as follows: First, forensic science program to enhance the scientific creative problem-solving abilities of gifted students was developed. Second, forensic science program is significantly effective in the improvement of scientific creative problem-solving abilities of gifted children of elementary school (p<.05). Third, in early stage of the class, a student, who showed the highest range of change in pre and post tests, revealed the trend of responding in a short answer type. In the late stage of the class, he revealed the capability of producing various creative ideas promptly. On the other hand, students belonging to the upper group of both pre and post test revealed the improvement of divergent thinking skills such as fluency, flexibility, and originality. Fourth, after class, the students responded that the forensic science program developed in this study intrigued the interests and curiosities, and helped them break away from fixed ideas.

  • The shoes process management monitoring system for supporting SCM is developed in this study. This system consists of a monitoring program, a conveyer system, a pneumatic unit, a controller, an USB camera, and a server and a client computer. To operate the developed system easily, the monitoring program using LabVIEW in the Windows environment is developed. This program consists of 5 modules: production management, inventory control, media management, defective management, and communication management. The developed system has several advantages: reduced time for managing process work, decreased labor costs, effective operation, and continuous work without an operator. Nowadays advanced manufacturing companies are trying to find a way to check the performance of their production equipments and plants from remote sites. Thus, to manage the developed system from remote sites, communication network is constructed. In order to evaluate the performance of the monitoring system, experiments were performed. The experimental results showed that the developed system provided a reliable performance and a stable communication.

  • Microprocessor-based software DDA interpolator is developed and applied to two axis contouring control of X-Y table. Developed assembly program is composed of feedrate, linear and circular DDA interpolation routines. Reference-pulse type of open-loop stepping motor control system in which the micro-computer produces a sequence of reference pulses for each axis of motion is adopted. To test performance of the developed program, X-Y table drive system based on stepping motor and shaft encoder is designed. Contouring error of the system in linear and circular path is within .+-.0.2 mm.

  • In this study , Computer programs for the optimum and automation desgin of reinforced concrete box culvert were developed. It was shown that even though the strarting points and optimization method are different the objective function and optimum design variables converge to a value within a close range respectively, and consequently the optimum design program developed in the study is reliable and stron. 3D-design drawing can be drawn using automation desgin computer program developed in this study.

  • When a vibration is generated due to the misalignment, the reduction of the vibration level is not attainable unless a correct shaft alignment is conducted. In a turbine system, an alignment procedure requires quite a lot amount of expense and time. To reduce this effort, an algorithm of the turbine alignment is developed to be used in the computer program. The program consists of five parts : input, calculation, display of the results, file management, and printer output. In the input part, users must provide the data on the turbine number, the reference value of the alignment, and the number of the feet of the generator. In calculation, the moving distance of the bearing and the necessary amount of the shims are calculated. In the display and the output parts, the calculated results are displayed and calculated. Then, by using the file management, results and procedures conducted are saved in the floppy diskette or in the hard disk. The developed program can be run in IBM PC compatible with more than 640 KB of main memory with the operating system of MS-DOS v 3.3 or higher. It is developed for novice users with no experience or specialty in this field. The program is not only useful in the power plant application, but also helpful for recording of the alignment procedures.

  • 지식 위주의 암기교육에서 지식 활용을 위한 창의성 교육으로 교육이 변화하면서 컴퓨터 교육 또한 창의성 교육에 중점을 두게 되었다. 그러나 지금까지 개발된 초등학교 컴퓨터 교재들은 창의성을 향상시키는데 부족함이 있다. 그리고 컴퓨터 프로그램 교육에 대한 연구들은 영재 교육에 대한 연구에 불과하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 일상생활 속에서 발견될 수 있는 컴퓨터 프로그램 요소를 소재로 초등학교 학생들을 위한 컴퓨터 교재를 개발하였다. 프로그램 요소를 바탕으로 20가지 교육주제를 만들어 교재를 개발하였으며, 창의성을 향상시키는데 목표를 두었다. 그리고 실제 초등학생을 대상으로 개발된 교재 내용을 교육한 후 학생들의 창의성을 향상시킬 수 있는지 검증하였다.

산물형 포장상자의 최적설계 요인분석에 의한 설계 프로그램 개발 (Development of a Computer Program for Bulk-type Container Design using Optimum Design Parameter Analysis)

  • If an optimum design technique is applied in the design of packaging container for bulk-type products, merits on the side of not only economic and compression performance but distribution efficiency are expected. Accordingly, minimum board area (mRBA), compression strength (CS) and compression strength per unit area (mCSPA) are important design parameters in optimum design of packaging container for bulk-type products. In this study, mathematical models for mRBA, CS and mCSPA of container as algorithm for optimum design program were developed. In order to develop these models, compression test by various dimensions of container and response surface analysis for mRBA, CS, and mCSPA of container were carried out. In the developed models, volume, W/L ratio and depth of container were principal independent variables. On the found of these models, optimum design program having faculties of outward and inward optimum design and information design was developed. Though the packaging specifications are same, required board area, board combination and cost of the corrugated board required container manufacture were greatly different by boundary conditions in outward design. Moreover, about 6.3∼10.1% in weight of container was lighter, and about 13.2∼25.6% in cost of container was reduced when the program was applied for 2 kinds of bulk-type products.

중학교 교사용 사이버 환경교육 연구 프로그램 개발 (Environmental Cyber Inservice Education Program Development for Middle School Teacher)

  • The purpose of the study was to develop an environmental cyber inservice education program for middle school teacher. The blended environmental cyber inservice education program was developed, through reviewing literatures, analyzing domestic and foreign's environmental inservice education programs and e-Learning contents, and experts conference. And, Pragram validity was evaluated by environmental education experts. Program development stage was confirmed five stage: (1) foundational analysis, (2) planning, (3) design, (4) production, and (5) evaluation. The developed contents for middle school teachers were consisted of 3 domains: (1) Foundation of Environmental Education, (2) Understanding about Environment, (3) Strategy for School Environmental Education. The contents of each sessions were selected considering synthetically objectives, themes and components of environmental education and structured of 62 hours Course totally. Developed program evaluated by 8 environmental education experts according to 10 evaluation item of total contents and contents development structure. In result, it evaluated comparatively high score. Based on the results, some recommendations were suggested.
