Ji-San, the founder of HyungSang medicine, emphasized food intake and detoxification by stating, "Korean medicine begins with detoxification." Toxin accumulates in one's body unless the internal and external conditions stay in their harmony. The accumulation of toxin is also caused by western medication or one-sided diet, and detoxification should be considered in those cases. HwangRyunHaeDok-Tang reduces fire and heat, and the lesion is likely to locate in the upper body. BangPoongTongSung-San can be used for systemic disease. IkWoon-San also reduces fire and heat but mainly focuses on promoting urination. InSamPaeDok-San has an effect of curing the external symptoms of SangHan(傷寒), in addition to detoxification. SeoGakJiHwang-Tang, SoDok-Eum, and SeoGakSoDok-Eum can resolve the heat-toxin when it is located on the surface. SibJeonDaeBo-Tang enhances the detoxifying function of human body. GhamDu-Tang and JaGeum-Jung have a general effect on detoxification.
This study was done as a general survey on oriental medical approaches for the detoxification and treatment of narcotics addiction. The treatment of narcotics addiction comprises the detoxification and the restoration of normal health. Medical detoxification in common use nowadays is largely divided into substitution therapy using opiate detoxicants and symptomatic therapy using non-opiate detoxicants. Experimentation was done on the supposition that non-opiate detoxicants provide a more viable therapy than opiate detoxicants in the treatment of narcotics addiction, because opiate detoxicants also produce a great dependency on a narcotic. At present, although the medication of oriental medicine that includes non-opiate detoxicants is not more effective in the detoxification than the opiate detoxicants, withdrawal symptoms are slight and few and there is a very low ratio of relapse, so treatment and restoration are relatively brief. Results of this survey suggest that detoxicants derived from oriental medical approaches are safe and effective, though further development of therapy with such detoxicants will be needed to provide reliable methods of treating narcotics addiction. Based on this survey, it is hoped that many more studies will be done on the issue of medication in the field of narcotics addiction treatment.
In order to examine that what kind of system correlated with cadmium detoxification mechanism in Klebsiella aerogenes ATCC 10031, we tried to investigate the effect of phosphate upon the detoxification and also elucidate whether the cadmium phosphate and/or polymeric Cd-Pi complex is formed actually in cell or not. As the results, it was shown that growing pattern had long lag adaptive phase of 12 hr to 24 hr, at the concentrations of 0.02 mM and 0.08 mM cadmium, respectively. Cadmium was accumulated more highly in the fraction of cell wall and membrane than in those of cytoplasm. In case of phosphate starving cells added cadmium, inorganic polyphosphate system was primarily correlated with Cd-detoxification during the lag phase for the accommodation to cadmium, on the other hand, Cd:Sulfide complex system secondarily correlated it during the stationary phase. These results implied that polyphosphate system and Cd:sulfide complex system, these two systems were operated compensatively each other. Considering the results obsdrved with EM and examined tha changes of sulfide and polyphosphate amount, it was reflected that Cd:S complex was located at the cell surface. In the results of $in-vivo^{31}$P NMR spectra in the cells with cadmium pressure, several phosphate signals arose newly from the polyphosphate region with moving chemical shift of it. This phinomenon strongly implied the actual existence of Dd:Pi comples and /or Cd:poly-P complex in the cell and also the cellular compartmentalization of cadmium detoxifying mechanism.
Recently, interest in detoxification therapies is increasing. Coffee enema has been most frequently used as one of detoxification therapies. However, there is lack of scientific basis for coffee enema, regarding its clinical efficacy and safety respectively. This study aimed to produce the general features of coffee enema such as definition, protocols, clinical applications and efficacies, and side effects. Total 37 articles coffee enema were collected from 7 databases including PubMed, and reviewed thoroughly. The majority of papers were review studies or case reports for effects/side-effects of coffee enema. The quality of papers was generally poor, and no randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) was exist. This study shows the current status of coffee enema-related study, and suggests the demand for RCT study to develop the evidence-based detoxification therapy using coffee enema.
Pesticide waste and chemical stockpiles are posing a potential threat to both Vie environment and human health. There is currently a great effort toward developing effective and economical methods for the detoxification of these toxic organophosphates. In terms of safety and economy, enzymatic biodegradation has been recommended as the most promising tool to detoxify these toxic materials. To develop an enzymatic degradation method to detoxify such toxic organophosphorus compounds, a gene encoding organophosphorus acid anhydrolase (OPAA) from genomic DNA of Alteromonas haloplanktis C was subcloned and expressed. The enzyme consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 48 kDa. It demonstrates strong hydrolyzing activity on sarin, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Moreover, its high activity is sustained for a considerable length of time. It is projected that the recombinant OPAA can be applied as an enzymatic tool that can be used not only for the detoxification of pesticide wastes, but also for the demilitarization of chemical stockpiles.
ZBTB3 belongs to the Zinc finger and BTB/POZ domain containing transcription factor family; however, its biological role has rarely been studied. We demonstrate for the first time, to our knowledge, that ZBTB3 is an essential factor for cancer cell growth via the regulation of the ROS detoxification pathway. Suppression of ZBTB3 using two different short hairpin RNAs in human melanoma, lung carcinoma, and breast carcinoma results in diminished cell growth. In addition, we found that suppression of ZBTB3 activates a caspase cascade, including caspase-9, -3, and PARP leading to cellular apoptosis, resulting from failed ROS detoxification. We identified that ZBTB3 plays an important role in the gene expression of ROS detoxification enzymes. Our results reveal that ZBTB3 may play a critical role in cancer cell growth via the ROS detoxification system. Therefore, therapeutic strategies that target ZBTB3 could be used in selective cancer treatments.

The mechanism for the elimination of xenobiotics undergoes three different phases of reactions in organisms. Among these, glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are classified as phase II detoxification enzymes, catalyzing the conjugation of electrophilic substrates to glutathione or reduced hydroperoxides. This study aimed to investigate the molecular characteristics, detoxification functions, and immune responses of GST omega (LhGSTO1) and kappa (LhGSTK1) in redlip mullet. The open reading frames of LhGSTO1 (720 bp) and LhGSTK1 (687 bp) encoded proteins of 239 and 228 amino acids, respectively. Sequence analysis revealed that LhGSTO1 and LhGSTK1 possessed GSH-binding sites in their N-terminal domains. Substrate-binding sites in the C-terminal domain were exclusively identified in LhGSTO1. In the tissue-specific transcription profile analysis, both LhGSTO1 and LhGSTK1 were ubiquitously expressed in all tissues of healthy mullets. Temporal expression analysis of LhGSTO1 and LhGSTK1 in the blood showed that their expression was significantly modulated by polyinosinic:polycytidylic (poly I:C), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and Lactococcus garvieae. Different chemical and cellular assays were performed to assess the detoxification and cellular protective abilities of the two proteins. A substrate specificity test using the recombinant proteins revealed that both proteins possessed specific activity toward 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB). In the disk diffusion assay, the smallest clearance zones were observed for LhGSTO1 and LGSTK1 against CdCl2. In the cell protection assay, both LhGSTO1 and LhGSTK1 showed significant Cd detoxification ability compared to the control. Collectively, these results demonstrate that GST omega and kappa are involved in host defense against immune stimulants and xenobiotics in redlip mullet.
