Estimating Evapotranspiration of Rice Crop Using Neural Networks -Application of Back-propagation and Counter-propagation Algorithm- (신경회로망을 이용한 수도 증발산량 예측 -백프로파게이션과 카운터프로파게이션 알고리즘의 적용-)

  • This paper is to evaluate the applicability of neural networks to the estimation of evapotranspiration. Two neural networks were developed to forecast daily evapotranspiration of the rice crop with back-propagation and counter-propagation algorithm. The neural network trained by back-propagation algorithm with delta learning rule is a three-layer network with input, hidden, and output layers. The other network with counter-propagation algorithm is a four-layer network with input, normalizing, competitive, and output layers. Training neural networks was conducted using daily actual evapotranspiration of rice crop and daily climatic data such as mean temperature, sunshine hours, solar radiation, relative humidity, and pan evaporation. During the training, neural network parameters were calibrated. The trained networks were applied to a set of field data not used in the training. The created response of the back-propagation network was in good agreement with desired values and showed better performances than the counter-propagation network did. Evaluating the neural network performance indicates that the back-propagation neural network may be applied to the estimation of evapotranspiration of the rice crop. This study does not provide with a conclusive statement as to the ability of a neural network to evapotranspiration estimating. More detailed study is required for better understanding and evaluating the behavior of neural networks.

  • The goal of this paper is to develope the control program based on model which can be applied to 1000MW class coal fired thermal power plant. 1000MW class power plant has the higher efficiency and lower cost because the steam conditions of the ultra super-critical process are higher than them of the previous power plants in temperature and pressure. The program includes the state variable controls which have the desired characteristics for the higher temperature and pressure. The program had been developed successfully using advanced process control. The simulation results using the new control program showed the better performance and safer control than them of the previous control program and we could verify the application possibility of the new program for the actual power plant through the load test, comparison, analysis and tuning.

  • In hands-free full-duplex communication systems, acoustic signals picked up by the microphones can be mixed with echo signals as well as noises, which may result in poor performance of the corresponding communication system. Also, the system performance may decrease further if the reverberation occurs since it is harder to estimate the impulse response of the demixing system. For blind source separation (BSS) in such cases, a time-frequency masking approach can be employed to separate undesired echo signals and noises, but, permutation ambiguities also should be solved for the echo cancellation. In this paper, we propose a new acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) approach utilizing the time-frequency masking and higher-order statistics, whereby a desired signal selection, based on coherence and third-order statistics (i.e., kurtosis), is introduced along with output signal normalization. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields better echo and noise cancellation performances than the conventional AEC approaches.

Complex Infinite Impulse Response Filter Equalization for Digital Vestigial Side Band Signals

  • In this paper, we propose a complex-valued IIR filter for digital VSB signals based on CMA in order to efficiently mitigate multipath distortions, especially the leakage from the quadrature component. The proposed equalizer overcomes the drawback of the conventional real-valued IIR equalizers that it attempts to equalize Hilbert transform of quadrature component. We demonstrate via simulation that the proposed complex IIR filter successfully mitigates the leakages from the quadrature component, while the conventional real IIR filter requires a longer IIR filter to achieve the same performance. We present cost function analysis for a simple two-tap case showing that the proposed IIR equalizer with CMA for VSB signals has a global minimum at the desired location.

  • The phase-locked loop technique developed in the 1930's has many advantages when applied to speed control. The speed control and analysis of a three phase induction motor using the PLL are described in this paper. In this system, the phase frequency detector (PFD) compares the actual motor speed from the pulses received from a shaft encoder and desired speed, and the difference adjusts the frequency of the inverter that feeds the motor, and excellent speed regulation in the order of 0.035(%) has been-obtained. A linear continuous model of the drive is developed and system response is analysed using conventional root locus techniques. Various compensating filters and feedback signals are considered and the need for addition of derivative feedback is shown. A sampled data model is used to study the effects of discrete PFD output. Stability limitson speed are predicted. A drive was implimented and experimental results are presented to verify theoretical predictions.

  • This paper proposes a Mamdani fuzzy PID controller for controlling a process with small dead time. The controller composes of a parallel structure of fuzzy PI controller and fuzzy PD controller. Each controller has two inputs, error and change of error. Hence, the control signal of the proposed controller is the average value of the output of the fuzzy PI and PD controllers. The Mamdani fuzzy PID controller is easily to be adjusted to meet the desired control system performances both in transient state and steady state. The simulation results of the proposed Mamdani fuzzy PID controller by using the same parameters (proportional gain, integral time and derivative time) as the conventional PID controller are shown.   • This paper presents a robust control of a smart flexible structure featured by a piezofilm actuator characterizing its light weght and quick response time. A mathematical governing equation for the proposed structure is derived by employing Hamilton's principle and a state space control model is subsequentrly obtained through modal analysis. Uncertain system parameters such as frequency variation are included in the control model. A sliding mode control theroy thich has inherent robustness to systme uncertainties is adopted to design a tracking controller for the peizofilm actuator. Using the output informaiton from the tip deflection sensor, a full-order observer is constructed ot estimate state variables for the system. Tracking performances for desired trajectories of sinusoidal amd step functions are evaluated by undertaking both simulation and experimental works.

  • This paper presents a new approach to design a robust tracking controller for linear time-invariant systems with uncertain time-delay. By introducing the model following control (MFC) structure which consists of two loops in nature, we show that the controller is capable of having a predictive control action and effectively tracking the reference output with a desired transient response as well. Three design techniques to achieve good tracking performance are suggested. It is also analytically shown that the tracking performance of the proposed scheme is more robust than that of typical single-loop feedback structure. An illustrative example is given to compare the tracking performances of the proposed methods with a single loop method.

  • This paper proposes a control algorithm for the power supply to maintain the desired output voltage waveform when the instantaneous power failure occurs. The proposed system switches the control mode between the voltage-controlled and the current-controlled modes in the instantaneous power failure. The proposed control method has little steady-state error and good transient response. The validity of the proposed scheme is investigated through simulation and experimental results.
