Prediction models of rock quality designation during TBM tunnel construction using machine learning algorithms

  • An accurate estimation of the geotechnical parameters in front of tunnel faces is crucial for the safe construction of underground infrastructure using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This study was aimed at developing a data-driven model for predicting the rock quality designation (RQD) of the ground formation ahead of tunnel faces. The dataset used for the machine learning (ML) model comprises seven geological and mechanical features and 564 RQD values, obtained from an earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM tunneling project beneath the Han River in the Republic of Korea. Four ML algorithms were employed in developing the RQD prediction model: k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGB). The grid search and five-fold cross-validation techniques were applied to optimize the prediction performance of the developed model by identifying the optimal hyperparameter combinations. The prediction results revealed that the RF algorithm-based model exhibited superior performance, achieving a root mean square error of 7.38% and coefficient of determination of 0.81. In addition, the Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) approach was adopted to determine the most relevant features, thereby enhancing the interpretability and reliability of the developed model with the RF algorithm. It was concluded that the developed model can successfully predict the RQD of the ground formation ahead of tunnel faces, contributing to safe and efficient tunnel excavation.

An Analysis of the Gap in Recognition between Managers and Experts regarding the Poisonous Substances Designation System (유독물지정제도에 대한 유해화학물질관리자 및 전문가의 인식도 분석 연구)

  • Objectives: Poisonous substances experts engage in policymaking regarding poisonous substances, whereas poisonous substances managers perform legal duties related to poisonous substances management systems at worksites. To understand and improve poisonous substances designation systems, it is necessary to distinguish the roles of these experts and managers. We further aimed to identify problems with poisonous substances appointment systems and provide basic data for their improvement by investigating the knowledge and recognition of the need for system improvement among managers and experts. Methods: To determine the $subjects^{\circ}{\emptyset}$ awareness of poisonous substances designation systems, a selfadministered questionnaire comprised of items on general characteristics and knowledge and recognition of the need for system improvement was issued. Data were analyzed via t-tests and ANOVA using SPSS v 16.0 Results: Regarding system comprehension, managers (n=213; mean 3.28, SD 0.63) significantly differed from experts (n=35; mean 4.08, SD 0.59) (P<0.001). No differences were found in recognition of need for improvement between managers (mean 3.11, SD 0.34) and experts (mean 3.24, SD 0.31). Significant differences in comprehension were found among managers by education level (P<0.05) and company size (P<0.05). Regarding industry type, comprehension was greater in the electrical/electronic and chemical/environmental industries compared to in other industries (P = 0.066). Comprehension was higher among those with five years or more of experience compared to those with less than five years. Regarding recognition of need for improvement, managers showed significant differences by company size (P<0.05). $Experts^{\circ}{\emptyset}$ comprehension showed no differences by general characteristics, while need for improvement differed according to work experience (P<0.001). Conclusion: The study found that the bigger the company size, the higher the level of comprehension by managers and the experts. In the case of both groups, where a higher comprehension of the poisonous substances designation system was evident, they recognized the necessity of its improvement.

  • It was ten yeas ago that Bolero Bill of Lading was been introduced on the base of efforts of UN and CMI to solve the crisis of Bill of Lading, but Electronic Bill of Lading is not utilized in practice owing to the problems to be settled. Bolero Bill of Lading is not in widespread use owing to absence of collaboration model between Bolero and e-Trade service providers in each nation in the early stage. In the situation that Bolero Bill of Lading is not utilized in practice, Korean Commercial Law regulates the designation of the registration authority of Electronic Bill of Lading. Therefore, the Minister of Justice designated KTNET as Registration Authority of Electronic Bill of Lading and KTNET opened the e-B/L Korea (www.eblkorea.or.kr) to provide the Electronic Bill of Lading service to domestic trade community. But there is many problems in supplying the Electronic Bill of Lading service by the e-B/L Korea in compared with Bolero Bill of Lading. These problems are related with the characteristics of designation of Registration authority of Electronic Bill of Lading. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to contribute to the activation of Electronic Bill of Lading domestically by studying the designation of Registration authority of Electronic Bill of Lading in Korea and finding the characteristics of the designation and the issues and problems regarding the characteristics.

Effects of Special Protection Area Designation on Soil Properties and Vegetation Coverage of Degraded Trails (국립공원 특별보호구 지정이 훼손 탐방로 주변 토양과 식생피도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate how the special protection area designations of degraded trails effect on the soil and vegetation recovery of degraded trails. The study areas were established on an opened trail and a 16-year closed trail, which was prohibited to enter after the designation as a special protection area for recovery, at Bukhansan National Park. Soil core sampling and measurements of vegetation cover were performed to compare soil and vegetation properties of the trails. Soil bulk density increased and soil water total nitrogen decreased on the opened trail, while no significant differences were found on bulk density, soil water, total nitrogen, acidity, and organic matter on the closed trail. On the opened trail, vegetation cover was seemed to be degraded, because vegetation litter cover ratio was low and barren rock cover ratio was high. On the closed trail, litter rock barren cover ratio of the closed trail was recovered, but only limited recovery was found on vegetation cover by applying environmental damage condition rating class. In conclusion, the closed trail was recovered by designation of special protection area, while difference in recovery progress of soil and vegetation was found. Therefore, designation of special protection area of degraded area should be based on scientific basis of recovery characteristics of the area. In order to improve the effectiveness of special protection area system, further specific standards for special protection area designation and management would be needed, considering ecological and social importance of target areas.

Research on performers of Songpa Sandae-nori before and after the designation as cutural heritage (<송파산대놀이> 문화재 지정 전후 연희자 연구)

  • This study examines the lives and the performances of the people who participated in Songpa Sandae-nori(a korean traditional mask dance drama) before and after the designation as cultural heritage, and reviews the changes and the inheritance patterns of the mask dance which appeared in the lives of the performers. Chapter 2 reviewed previous debates about the derivational theory and the players of Songpa Sandae-nori before the flood in 1925, and discussed on awareness and the characteristics of the performers found through the review. Then the study went on to the inheritance patterns of the drama before the designation, focusing on the figures of Dolmari(a name of village in Songpa, Seoul) players who led the stage after 1925. As a result, the missing part of the activities and the lives of Dolmari performers have been more clearly identified, especially about Lee Beomman, Yeo taesan and Eum Joongeun(the main performers of Songpa Sandae-nori). Chapter 3 is about the inheritance patterns of the cultural heritage after the designation, and Heo Hoyoung was the main focus of the discussion. The researches so far have admitted his great contributions to the designation of cultural asset, although they have not proved how. After investigating various records and combining the testimonies of his students and locals, Heo Ho-young was found that he did not only gave plays of Songpa Sandae-nori but also actively engaged in the field of various traditional arts. Furthermore, jokes, dances, and masks left by him are considered to be evidences to reassess his performances.

The impact of the legal designation and collection system on the abandonment and surrender of non-native common snapping turtle(Chelydra serpentina) in South Korea (법정관리종 지정 및 수거 제도가 외래종 늑대거북 유기에 미치는 영향)

  • The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina), which is native to North America, started to be imported into South Korea as pets in the 1990s. The turtle was sold in supermarkets and pet shops nationwide at low prices such as 20 USD. These non-native turtles, with their large size and strong predatory nature, have been consistently discovered in the wild in South Korea beginning in 2014, and they were designated as an ecosystem-disturbing species (EDS) in October 2022. Until June 30, 2023, a collection system was implemented to reduce the abandonment problem of C. serpentina due to their designation as an EDS. In this study, we analyzed the impacts of the legal designation as an ecologically disturbing species and the collection system of C. serpentina on their abandonment and surrender. Our findings showed that designation as EDS did not affect the abandonment of C. serpentina. Meanwhile, the collection system led to cases of immediate surrender. Within 3 years of post-purchase, 41.8% of the turtles were surrendered, and 67.5% were surrendered when they reached 3kg. Determining the impact of the legal designation as an EDS may be currently limited due to the difficulty of detecting C. serpentina in the wild. On the other hand, cases of surrender through the collection system are considered to be effective as they have been shown to reduce the abandonment of this newly designated ecosystem-disturbing species.

A Study on the Problem Analysis of Designation and Management of the Zone of Urban Nature Park (도시자연공원구역 지정 및 관리상의 문제점 분석)

  • This study was performed with the purpose of providing basic data for the improvement of zoning regulations of urban nature park by analyzing the present problem which occurred during last 6 years from the year of 2005 when the program was introduced for the first time. The study was processed first by the analysis of the cases of problems evoked by citizens, second the other problems was delineated by interviews of officials, at last the validity of all of the problems was verified by a group of professionals through delphi method. The results can be summarized as follows. 1. In relation to the designation and management of urban national park areas, designation criteria, designation process, maintenance, laws and regulations and 20 other items were found to be problematic. After Delphi method, 5 items were removed and 2 added. The results showed that there were 17 problematic items in total. 2. Regarding the problem of criteria for designation, which are, lack of priority(weights), lack of objectivity due to the difficulty to use quantitative evaluation method, incompatibility for contaminated land environmental impact assessment, incompatibility of land suitability assessment, lack of detailed field survey standards, lack of national park area standards, and 6 other items. 3. Regarding the problem of designation process, which are, the occurrence of civil appeals for designating a new national park, the needs of feasibility study on the urban national park areas constructed before urban national park guidelines came out, lack of a comprehensive review of the boundaries set when determining national park area management plan, poor temporal and financial conditions for an accurate field survey, and 4 other items. 4. Regarding the problem of maintenance management, which are, lack of management system in each space, lack of effectiveness of Urban Nature Park Area Management Plan among master plans for park and green areas, the occurrence of dual managers due to dual natures such as purpose area and city park, lack of professional manpower to manage park areas, and 4 other items. 5. Regarding the problems of regulation guidelines, which are, lack of separate urban park area management plan, incompatibility of the permitted facilities in the park to the park area standards, lack of feasibility study on urban park areas, and 3 other items.

Review on the Implementation Process and Achievement of ICH Safeguarding System (무형문화재 보호제도의 이행과정과 그 성과에 관한 검토)

  • The Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Korea has begun since1962 when the Cultural Properties Protection Act was established. Korean ICH Safeguarding system is initially derived from Cultural Properties Protection Act in Japan. Japan has started Important ICH Designation System in 1954 to concede the skills and artistic talents holders, thus it could implement the multilateral system management for adopting different ICH protection systems such as Important Intangible Folklore Properties, Selection and Preservation Techniques, and Documenting Records. However, Korea has solely adopted Important ICH Designation System since Cultural Properties Protection Act was introduced. Korean ICH Safeguarding System represented by the Certification System of ICH Skill Holders is to ensure skills and artistic holders who perform the elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and manage the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in order to let the skills and artistic holders instruct inheritors. As a result, it could build up the internal foundation for the diffusion of inheritors and established the related organizations. However, the inheritor-centered protection system has caused many problems as it is being lasted for more than fifty years. Fragmented designation measures, the cultural power of skill holders, and the research and evaluation methods have pointed out the difficulties of safeguarding and preservation measures of ICH. Moreover,the legitimacy of safeguarding system related in the authenticity of transmission in ICH has emerged to review the safeguarding system of ICH with diverse viewpoints. Therefore, this paper will review the implementation process and achievement of ICH safeguarding system to examine the problem and causes of the safeguarding system. The conference records of Cultural Property Association and articles of cultural properties policies directors, Cultural Property Association members, and professional experts are being used for the initial materials of this paper, and it is examined for the contents of designation system of Important Cultural Heritage, rather than overall cases. Thus such problems the limitation of expansion in ICH lists as inheritor-centered designation system, hierarchical and exclusive transmission system, inappropriate concept of archetype as the principle of ICH transmission are derived from the root of Important ICH designation system. Thus this paper demonstrates that this system must be revised for the expansion of ICH safeguarding system in Korea and points out multilateral protection system should be established as well as Certification System of Important ICH skill holders.
