  • Recently, according to the development of electromagnetic wave technique, more frequent and powerfull wave radiation becomes inevitable and so electromagnetic environments has become worse accordingly. Electromagnetic wave absorber is known the most effective preventive remedy to cope with the EMI/EMC problem. To realize broad-band electromagnetic wave absorber, triple layered structure where an air layer is interposed between a sintered ferrite layer and a ruber ferrite layer was adopted. Computer simulation for optimum design and evaluation of absorption characteristics has been made. The results shows that designed broad-band electromagnetic wave absorber can be useful for EMI/EMC problem, especially reducing TV ghosts in both VHF and UHF bands by additionally an air layer and a thin rubber ferrite layer on the surface of conventional ferrite, without replacing it.

  • This paper reports the result of an investigation into wave propagation in orthotropic laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shells in hydrothermal environment. A dynamic model of laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shell is derived based on Cooper-Naghdi shell theory considering the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The wave characteristics curves are obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of layer numbers, thickness of piezoelectric layers, thermal loads and humid loads on the wave characteristics curves are discussed through numerical results. The solving method presented in the paper is validated by the solution of a classical elastic shell non-containing the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The new features of the wave propagation in laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shells with various laminated material, layer numbers and thickness in hydrothermal environment and some meaningful and interesting results in this paper are helpful for the application and the design of the ultrasonic inspection techniques and structural health monitoring.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated the Electromagnetic(EM) wave absorber for an Electronic Toll Collection(ETC or Hi-pass) system by using Amorphous metal powder and CPE. The material properties and the absorption properties of the samples containing 50 wt.%, 60 wt.%, 70 wt.%, and 80 wt.% of Amorphous. Moreover, the EM wave absorption abilities were simulated for the different thicknesses of the EM absorbers by adopting the measured permittivity and permeability, and then the EM wave absorber was fabricated based on the simulated design values. As a result, the EM wave absorber with the composition of Amorphous metal powder : CPE = 50 : 50 wt.% with the thickness of 2.6 mm has excellent absorption ability more than 40 dB at 5.8 GHz.

  • The research, design, and development of wireless access technologies using the new 6 to 100GHz band mmWave are actively underway in order to address the frequency shortage problem in the sub-6GHz band and accommodate the 5G technical requirements, such as the increased transmission capacity. Technical elements to efficiently overcome the problems caused by mmWave signal characteristics, support an effective interworking with a conventional communication service, and ensure smooth mobility between mmWave base stations and existing base stations are also being investigated. This paper discusses the technical solutions for an mmWave-based 5G RAN configuration and their considerations under various operational scenarios.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated an electromagnetic(EM) wave absorber for automotive radar in cars using $TiO_2$ as a dielectric material and chlorinated polyethylene(CPE) as a binder. First of all, we confirmed that the optimum composition ratio of $TiO_2$ was about 70 wt.%. The complex relative permittivity of a sample containing $TiO_2$: CPE=70:30 wt.% was calculated from S-parameter. The EM wave absorption abilities were simulated for the EM wave absorbers of different thickness using the calculated relative permittivity, and the EM wave absorber was manufactured based on the simulated design. A comparison of simulated and measured results is in good agreement. Measurement shows that a 1.85 mm thick absorber has absorption ability higher than 20 dB in the frequency range of $76{\sim}77$ GHz for automotive radars.

  • This paper deals with an implementation method for the one chip microprocessor(8097)-based capacitance type wave recorder for a measuring real-time wave height. The system was developed to make it possible to real-time remote sensing the wave height by deploying the RS-232/422/485 communication methods. The system test results for the developed system such as linearity, system stability and robustness of the disturbance was also verified through the performance tests of the system. Furthermore, the system was developed after due consideration with connecting the public network such as satellite mobile communication system and LAN, through the deploying VLSI(Very Large Scale Integration) design techniques.

  • A traveling-wave CPW(coplanar waveguide) electrode with abruptly broken input/output-taper for LiNbO$_3$optical modulator was designed and fabricated. The electrical characteristics of traveling-wave electrode on z-cut LiNbO$_3$crystal with SiO$_2$buffer layers were measured by network analyzer. To confirm the possibility of the electro-optic modulator electrode, detailed calculations of the impedance, microwave effective index and attenuation constants are presented as a function of the microwave electrode thickness, but the buffer layer thickness is fixed as 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These characteristics are discussed from the viewpoint of the device optimization and are expected to be design guides for the LiNbO$_3$modulator’s electrodes.

  • Turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation exerted on the surface of a structure can give rise to a elastic stress wave on the surface of the structure. The stress wave so called surface wave, will not only propagate along the surface of structure but also penerate into the structure. To reduce the transmission of stress wave into the structure the elastomer layer is usually attactched on the surface of structure. The transfer function, which is defined herein as the ratio of stress waves at the surface and bottom of the elastomer layer, is derved by use of the cylindrical coordinates system. The elastodynamics of the elastomer layer subjected to the turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation is represented by the simplified one degree-of-freedom model for easy prediction of the stress wave transmission as well as efficient design of the elastomer layer.

  • The purpose of the present research is to develop an efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. The paper deals with the numerical calculation of potential flow around the series 60 with forward velocity by the new slender ship theory. This new slender ship theory is based on the asymptotic expression of the Kelvin-source, distributed over the small matrix at each transverse section so as to satisfy the approximate hull boundary condition due to the assumption of slender body. Some numerical results for series 60, C sub(b) =0.6, hull are presented in this paper. The wave pattern and wave resistance are computed at two Froude numbers, 0.267 and 0.304. These results are better than those of Michell's thin ship theory in comparison with measured results. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.

  • Calm water wave resistance plays a very important role in ship hull design. Numerical methods are meaningful for this reason. In this study, two prevailing methods, the Neumann-Kelvin and the Rankine source method, were implemented and compared. The Neumann-Kelvin method assumes linearized free surface boundary condition and only needs to mesh the hull surface. The Rankine source method considers nonlinear free surface boundary condition and meshes both the ship hull surface and free surface. Both methods were implemented and the wave resistance of a Wigley III and three Series 60(Cb=0.6, 0.7, 0.8) hulls were analyzed. The results were compared with experimental results and the merits of both numerical techniques were quantified. Based on the results, it is concluded that the Rankine source method is more accurate in the calculation of the wave-making resistance. Using the Neumann-Kelvin method, it is found to be easier to model the hull and can be used for slender ships to solve problems like wave current coupling calculation.
