  • By means of statistical analysis and module concept, this paper investigated the current situation of high school girl's uniform and put forward its improved design and database establishment. Combined with the survey data, the future design direction and trend of the high school girls' uniform were proposed. By using modular design concept, the uniform is divided into five modules, and a style database has been built. Meanwhile, the parametric pattern database has been completed by using garment CAD system, based on the style database above, which has 42,336 possibilities to assemble a pair of school uniform. Combining with digital sewing techniques and by using computerized embroidery machine, the personalized design of high school girl's summer uniform has been realized. And two simulated case have been given for examples to prove its feasibility. The idea of modular design and parametric design method proposed in this study offer references for establishing the modular design database and parametric pattern database for other types of school uniform and are of relatively high practical and theoretical value.

  • The purpose of the paper is empirically to explore 'design manner', focusing on the designer's knowledge boundary on the designer-user interactions in the design process. This study conducts a field study and observed designer's interactions with actual users in a leading user-centered design firm over three months. The observations revealed how designers bring ideas about users into design without physically interacting with users during the design process. Based on Bourdieu's theory of practice and the concept of boundary objects, this study introduces the concept of 'design manner', by which designers incorporate user's ideas into the design process without actual involvement of users in the process. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by introducing the design manner in-between designer's and user's knowledge boundaries and argue bridge between theoretical and actual designer-user interactions in the IS design process.

  • Stage costumes perform not only the instrumental but also the expressive functions. The major goal of this study is to develop the functional and aesthetic costume designs for musical players considering the characteristics of instruments. players’ postures. The scope of this study is restricted to the musical costumes for female adult soloists playing the wind and string instruments. This study is composed of theory research, empiricalresearch and manufacturing a real costume. First, theory research contains theory of musical costumes and that of pure musical areas. Concept, characteristics and wearing effects are analysed in theory of musical costumes. Second, designs of instruments and playing postures are analysed in the theory of pure musical areas. Proper and improper designs are compared based on the survey asking the favorite designs of 56 wind and string players. Third, I manufacture a stage costume for a harpist. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, wind and string players think the functionality of costumes more importantly than the esthetic sense. And there are differences in design preferences for different playing postures. Second, string Players basically use arms, fingers and the upper body. Wind players use fingers more than string players and do abdominal breathing. Third, string players think the design of arms and sleeves because of frequent usage of bow and prefer the design without sleeves. On the contrary, wind players think the silhouette importantly because of standing playing posture. Fourth, players don't think that the accessory is not important and want it so long as it doesn't hinder playing. Fifth, shoes plays more important role than costume in case of playing posture with using pedals and moving legs frequently. Lastly, both wind and string players prefer the design with simplicity and comfort most.

  • In the new product development process, concept testing which screens ideas with the highest probability of market success is very effective in predicting the success of a new product. However, designers do not have accurate guidelines in new product development because the structure of cause and effect of consumers' preference - the most important part of concept testing - has not been provided as quantitative data. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present guidelines for new product concept development through applying means-end chain theory and product form theory which explains what kinds of benefits cause consumers to purchase a product and what kinds of design attributes meet the benefits. In this study, after reviewing means-end chain theory and product form theory, and developing a research model, guidelines for a concept product development (TV are provided through an empirical study.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the clue of planning guideline for the elderly welfare center supporting the healthy life of the elderly through deriving the planning element of the elderly welfare center based on the Salutogenic Model(SM). The research method was proceeded with literature review. The meaning of Sense of Coherence(SOC) and Generalised Resistance Resources(GRR) which constitute Salutogenic Model is established. The correlation between SOC and GRR is analyzed. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, EBD, BD, HD, UD, and BFD were studied as planning theories that could enhance the SOC of space. Second, based on the five planning theories, 43 planning elements needed for the elderly welfare center plan were derived. Third, as a result of classifying the plan elements based on the SOC, 'Manageability' is divided into 22 elements, 'Meaningfulness' is 11 and 'Comprehensibility' is 10 elements. Fourth, the details of the SOC items for each theory are as follows: BFD focuses on 'Manageability' with 'Manageability'(74%) and 'Comprehensibility'(26%), but 'Meaningfulness' does not exist. And UD regards 'Comprehensibility'(66%) as important, and 'Manageability' and 'Meaningfulness' as 17%. BD, on the other hand, has a high percentage of 'Meaningfulness'(70%), 'Comprehensibility'(21%) and 'Manageability'(9%). Next, the 'Manageability' of HD and EBD is 46%. And HD was 'Meaningfulness'(34%), 'Comprehensibility'(20%), and EBD was 'Meaningfulness'(30%) and 'Comprehensibility'(24%). The three items of SOC showed different distribution according to the spatial planning theory. As a result of the analysis, the spatial planning theory with the 'Comprehensibility' was related to Universal Design(UD), and the spatial planning theory with the 'Manageability' was related to Barrier-Free Design(BFD). In addition, the spatial planning theory of 'Meaningfulness' was related to Bio-philic Design(BD). Therefore, the plan of the elderly welfare center needs to approach the multidimensional design methodology to enhance the SOC(Sense of Coherence).

  • This study tries to review 'Sakuteiki(作庭記)', the Book of Garden Making, compiled at the end of the 11th Century during the Heian Period of Japan, from the East-Asian perspective. 'Sakuteiki' is a Garden Theory Book, the oldest in the world as well as in Asia, and it contains the traditional knowledge of Japanese ancient garden culture, which originated from the continent(Korea and China). Traditional knowledge related to East-Asian garden culture reviewed in this paper is "Fungsu Theory"(風水, Asian traditional ecology: Fengshui in Chinese; Fusui in Japanese), stemmed from the culture to seek sound and blessed places to live in. Viewed from modern landscape architecture, the Fungsu Theory corresponds to ecology(science). The Fungsu Theory was established around the Han Dynasty of China together with the Yinyangwuxing(陰陽五行) Theory and widely used for making human residences including gardens. It was transmitted to Japan via Korea as well as through direct transaction between Japan and China. This study reinterprets garden design principles represented in Sakuteiki, which were selected in 5 key words according to the Fungsu Theory. The 5 key words for the Fungsu Theory are "the place in harmony of four guardian gods(四神相應地)", "planting trees in the four cardinal directions", "flow of Chi(氣)", "curved line and asymmetry", and "mountain is the king, water is the people". Garden design principles of "the place in harmony of four guardian gods(四神相應地)" and "planting trees in the four cardinal directions" are corresponding to "Myeongdang-ron(明堂論, Theory of propitious site)". The place in harmony of four guardian gods mentioned in Sakuteiki is a landform surrounded by the flow of water to the east, the great path to the west, the pond to the south, and the hill to the north. And the Theory originated from Zhaijing(宅經, Classic of dwelling Sites) of China. According to this principle, the city was planned and as a miniature model, the residence of the aristocrat during the Heian period was made. At the residence the location of the garden surrounded by the four gods(the flow of water, the great path, the pond, and the hill) is the Myeongdang(明堂, the propitious site: Mingtang in Chinese; Meido in Japanese). Sakuteiki explains how to substitute for the four gods by planting trees in the four cardinal directions when they were not given by nature. This way of planting originated from Zhaijing(宅經) and also goes back to Qiminyaoshu (齊民要術), compiled in the 6th Century of China. In this way of planting, the number of trees suggested in Sakuteiki is related to Hetu(河圖) and Luoshu(洛書), which are iconography of Yi(易), the philosophy of change, in ancient China. Such way of planting corresponds to that of Yongdoseo(龍圖墅, the villa based on the principle of Hetu) presented in Sanrimgyeongje (山林經濟), an encyclopedia on agriculture and living in the 17th Century of Korea. And garden design principles of "the flow of Chi(氣)", "curved line and asymmetry" is connected to "Saenggi Theory(生氣論, Theory of vitality)". Sakuteiki explains the right flow of Chi(氣) through the proper flow and the reverse flow of the garden stream and also suggests the curved line of the garden stream, asymmetric arrangement of bridges and stones in the garden, and indented shape of pond edges, which are ways of accumulating Chi(氣) and therefore lead to "Saenggi Theory" of the Fungsu Theory. The last design principle, "mountain is the king, water is the people", is related to "Hyeongguk Theory(形局論, Theory of form)" of the Fungsu Theory. Sakuteiki explains the meaning of garden through a metaphor, which views mountain as king, water as the people, and stones as king's retainers. It compares the situation in which the king governs the people with the help of his retainers to the ecological phenomena in which mountain(earth) controls water with the help of stones. This principle befits "Hyeongguk Theory(形局論, Theory of form)" of the Fungsu Theory which explains landform on the analogy of social systems, people, animals and things. As above, major garden design principles represented in Sakuteiki can be interpreted in the context of the Fungsu Theory, the traditional knowledge system in East Asia. Therefore, we can find the significance of Sakuteiki in that the wisdom of ancient garden culture in East-Asia was integrated in it, although it described the knowhow of a specific garden style in a specific period of Japan.

  • Dean (1965) proposed the use of the root mean square error (RMSE) in the dynamic free surface boundary condition (DFSBC) and kinematic free-surface boundary condition (KFSBC) as an error evaluation criterion for wave theories. There are well known wave theories with RMSE more than 1%, such as Airy theory, Stokes theory, Dean's stream function theory, Fenton's theory, and trochodial theory for deep-water waves. However, none of them can be applied for deep-water breaking waves. The purpose of this study is to provide a closed-form solution for deep-water waves with RMSE less than 1% even for breaking waves. This study is based on a previous study (Shin, 2016), and all flow fields were simplified for deep-water waves. For a closed-form solution, all Fourier series coefficients and all related parameters are presented with Newton's polynomials, which were determined by curve fitting data (Shin, 2016). For verification, a wave in Miche's limit was calculated, and, the profiles, velocities, and the accelerations were compared with those of 5th-order Stokes theory. The results give greater velocities and acceleration than 5th-order Stokes theory, and the wavelength depends on the wave height. The results satisfy the Laplace equation, bottom boundary condition (BBC), and KFSBC, while Stokes theory satisfies only the Laplace equation and BBC. RMSE in DFSBC less than 7.25×10-2% was obtained. The series order of the proposed method is three, but the series order of 5th-order Stokes theory is five. Nevertheless, this study provides less RMSE than 5th-order Stokes theory. As a result, the method is suitable for offshore structural design.

  • The design theory of roller gate has been systematized laying more emphasis on practical formulas than theoretical ones and the design procedure of the existing gate facilites is reviewed and analyaed on economical viewpoint and safety factor. The design theory of timoshenko, the thechnical standards for hydraulic gate and penstock of Japan, and the design standards for waterworks structures of Germany are applied to the study of optimal design of a gate leaf. In this study, gate leaf which is now being operated for water control at the seadike, estuary dam and reservoir dam are adopted as a mode, and a new design method by the computer is proposed through the variation of design elements within practical ranges. As a result, safety factor and economical design can be made by using T-beams to the horizontal and vertical beam of the gate leaf instead of H-beams used in the existing seadike roller gate at Asan, and total weight of gate leaf is reduced by the present optimization.

  • In the recent years, with a purpose to provide visual and psychological stability to patients and hospital users, Affordance design theory based on perceptual psychological thought has been applied as hospital design. In the past, hospital service design was focused on but Affordance design theory focuses on the patients' experience and methodological research on . The characteristics of the application of Affordance design in the case of patients' experience and service point is as follows:- Firstly, Affordance design is applied when the objective of the patient's experience and the functionality of the object are combined. In other words, affordance design is a condition that arises when encounter between service contact point and patients' experience takes place. Secondly, In the field of Hospital service design, Affordance concepts in and its application can be divided on the functions of experience, cognition and sense following the application of Affordance concepts in Hospital service design. Thirdly, Affordance design method sets meaning of the action received through information provided by morphological features. The condition and surrounding has to be designed in a way that it can induce active behavior of the patient. This study has significance as it has been studied from the perspectives of Affordance theory of design psychology in addition to the physical environment of the hospital, the point of interaction between the hospital and patient, along with the elements of experience design. This study proposes the necessity of analytical study in the field of service design implementation considering various stakeholders in the service contact points of small and medium hospitals in Korea. Furthermore, study of the application of Affordance design can be complemented by reflecting the size of hospitals, the characteristics of specialties, and the specific service environment of each hospital can also be conducted.
