Over 100 experiments have been conducted at the University of Maryland to evaluate the performance of a water mist fire suppression system for protection of an interstitial space below a raised subfloor. Experiments are conducted as part of an ongoing research effort to compare the fire suppression capabilities of various water mist system designs in a raised subfloor space. Water mist system design parameters considered in the investigation include means of actuation, concentration of water mist required for extinguishment of fires, and delivery mechanisms of water mist within close proximity to the fire. Delivery of the required concentration of water mist within close proximity to the fire is a principal factor governing the adequacy of water mist systems. Two sets of experiments have been conducted to document the performance of water mist system designs. One set is involved in documenting the concentration of water mist as a function of position within the space. The second set of experiments is concerned with the ability of water mist system designs to control fires in the space. One result of the research is the assessment of the ability of a water mist system to control fires at particular locations as a function of water mist density at that location.
Structural design against the progressive collapse has been a vital necessity for decades due to occasional tragic events. The question of whether designed structures against the progressive collapse are still robust if subjected to multi-hazard scenarios containing column removal and successive localized fires is ad-dressed in the current study. Two seven-story steel structures with an identical area but different structural configurations of 4- and 5-bays are designed against the progressive collapse; the structural components are also fireproofed for a 60 min fire resistance. The structures are then subjected to different column re-moval scenarios over different stories followed immediately by localized fires. Results indicate that the structures are not able to keep their stability under all of the considered scenarios; the 4-bay structure is more vulnerable than the 5-bay structure. It is also indicated that upper stories are more sensitive toward the considered scenarios than lower stories. To advance structural safety, two strategies are adopted: in-creasing the thickness of the insulation materials to reduce the thermal effects, or, increasing the safety fac-tor (ΩN) of the structures when designing against the progressive collapse. As for the first strategy, provid-ing a 35% and a 25% increase in the insulation thicknesses of the structural components of the 4-bay and 5-bay structures, respectively, can prevent a progressive collapse to trigger. As for the second strategy, in-creasing ΩN by 10% can enhance the structural integrity to where no collapse occurs under all of the sce-narios.

The effect of soil damage on the physicochemical characteristics and activity of the soil microbial community is not well known. This study investigates this relationship by analyzing 11 soil samples collected from various points of soil damage across Gyeonggi-do. Soil damage resulted from forest fires, landslides, and development areas, with their impacts most severe on the topsoil layer (0-30 cm). Dehydrogenase and β-glucosidase activities were notably higher at locations damaged by forest fires compared to other sites. While enzyme activities in soils influenced by landslides and development areas were relatively low, sites with a pollution history exhibited elevated dehydrogenase activity, likely due to past microbial response to the pollution. Additionally, an assessment of carbon substrate usability by soil microorganisms indicated higher substrate availability in areas impacted by forest fires, contrasting with lower availability in landslide and development sites. Statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between organic content of sand and clay and microbial activity. These findings provide valuable insights into soil damage and associated restoration research, as well as management strategies.
Although the number of medium-length road tunnels, less than 1 km in length, has increased recently more than 30 percent each year, their ventilation and fire safety system design guidelines have not been established yet. The guidelines for long tunnel design are adopted even for the medium-length road tunnels. Therefore the necessity is brought up to optimize the ventilation and fire safety systems based on their own design guidelines. This study aims at determining the optimal start time of jet fan in case of 20 MW fires by analyzing smoke backlayering range, temperature distribution, range of poor visibility, evacuation time and critical velocity. The CFD study results are expected to contribute to propose the optimal fan operation mode.
In offshore structures, fire is one of the most important hazardous events. The concern of fires has recently been reflected in the rules and quantified risk assessment based design practice. Within the framework of quantified risk assessment and the management of offshore installations, therefore, more refined computations of the consequences or hazardous action effects due to fire are required. To mitigate fire risk, passive fire protection(PFP) is widely used on offshore structures. This study presents methods for a nonlinear structural response analysis considering the PFP effects under fires. It is found that a structural response analysis is most likely to use valuable technology for the optimization and design of offshore structures with PFP. Thermal and structural response analyses have been performed using LS-DYNA and FAHTS/USFOS. The results of these structural response analyses are compared with each other.

By investigating a series of catastrophic tunnel fires, this research aims to evaluate the fire resistance design method as applied to tunnel structures in Korea. It is shown that the current strategy is oriented towards smoke control and ventilation to reduce the loss of life. As structural collapse is not regarded, a general guide is proposed to obtain the fire safety.

The application of all regulations during building phase, plus constant vigilance in operation is essential to reducing the risk of fire aboard. A Safety by design approach is increasingly important. Fire safety regulation can solve problems which are hard to be solved by HSC code(International Code of Safety for High Speed Craft). Recently HSC code is applied for ship design development or guidance to the designer and demonstrates many advantages. In this pages, ship fire Safety are realistically modeled as ship design and the shipboard fires & muster stations are analyzed using HSC Code.

The risk of a fire in a building is closely related to the usage of the building. In particular, all fires that occur in a building are not risky to safety of human life, and it is associated with the combustion area and the increase of total floor area of the building. Therefore, this study focused on safety of human life in terms of the statistics of fire with considering the aspect of growing fires and analyzed the statistical data of fire for 10 years. As for the analysis on fire, the time of occurrence by usages of buildings, frequency of occurrence and the ratio of casualties etc. were analyzed. It is expected that results of this study could be used for evaluations on a variety of parts in terms of design, construction and maintenance of buildings.

Recently, due to fires in high-rise residential and commercial buildings and apartments in Ulsan and Busan, the issue of evacuation safety in the event of a building fire is being closely watched. In the evacuation safety design for these building fires, it is important to secure evacuation routes considering the spatial characteristics of the building or the characteristics of the occupants and to take measures to protect the evacuation routes in order to ensure the safety of the occupants in the event of a fire. Although simulation is mainly used in Korea to assess the safety of evacuation, there is a big difference in that the Building Standards Act provides tools that can be calculated more than simulation in neighboring Japan. In addition to the evaluation method, which is called the "Building Law Assessment Methods" in Japan, the research team considered that it is important to know the process of evaluation in future domestic research, and investigated the contents of the evaluation process and wanted to apply it first to domestic buildings in the future.
