  • The design of observers for the systems with unknown and unmeasurable disturbances is treated. A generalized observer design method is proposed and existence conditions are established by combining the existing two different approaches` disturbance modelling approach by O'Reilly and algebraic approach by Kudva et. al.. The proposed approach, therefore, takes the advantages and removes the shortcomings of the existing two approaches in view points of dimensionality and existence conditions of the observer. To show the usefulness of the approach, a numerical example is given.

  • This paper investigates the problem of linear parameter-dependent output feedback controllers design for interconnected linear parameter-varying(LPV) plant. By using a parameter-independent common Lyapunov function, sucient conditions for solving the problems are established, which allow us to design linear parameter dependent decentralized controllers in terms of scaled H-infinite control problems for related linear systems without interconnections. The solvability conditions are expressed in terms of finite-dimensional linear matrix inequalities(LMI´s) evaluated at the extreme points of the admissible parameter set.

  • Logic design using multiplexer has been used as a useful method for design convenience and flexibility in structural digital system design. In this paper, we analyze the effect of don't care conditions on logic optimization in a multiplexer-based logic design, which was not discussed enough in the previous studies in multiplexer based logic design, and describe the use of don't care conditions for designing of a single multiplexer and multiple multiplexer-based logic design. Especially, the design method when the number of data input is not 2m (as the number of selection lines is m) is considered. We also describe how to apply the proposed technique to the digital logic design education in conjunction with microprocessor design using Arduino which is widely used in creative engineering education recently.

  • Modern production requires production staff who have design competence, experience and skills to work in various types of work integrated into professional activities. Possession of digital design methods significantly expands the opportunities for professional activities of qualified workers. The purpose of our study was to study the impact of pedagogical conditions on the formation of design competence of future qualified workers in a group work. We have identified a set of pedagogical conditions that promote the development of professionally oriented artistic and technical creativity of workers in the conditions of curricular and extracurricular activities, which include motivational-target, procedural-semantic, organizational-technological, and subject-oriented. It is shown that the formation of design competence is determined by motivational, informational-active and reflection criteria, which are aimed at motivational-value, cognitive, operational-active, creative, social and emotional components of this competence. The methodology of the research is highlighted, which includes the use of the following methods: determination of the personality's motivational sphere in order to identify strong and weak motives of students activity; multiple intelligence to identify students talents in the direction of practical intelligence, which is important for design competence; determining the level of creative activity to identify manifestations of students creative abilities; identifying the type of students innovative thinking in order to develop motivation for success; factor-criterion model, developed on the basis of a qualimetric approach, which is used to identify the level of design competence formation in accordance with its components. The results of the study showed that the creation of separate pedagogical conditions in the institution of vocational education and training (VET) had a positive impact on the development of design competence, which shows the potential of artistic and technical design in the development of professional creativity of future qualified workers taking into account the environmental approach.

  • Although an interest in higher design speeds continues to increase to promote more efficient travel on expressways, the current Korean design guidelines do not provide criteria for design values. An arising issue associated with higher design speeds is how to effectively ensure traffic safety under such high speed traffic conditions. In particular the safety issue would become more significant in determining the interchange spacing. This study proposes a methodology for determining freeway interchange spacing under higher speed traffic conditions. A microscopic traffic simulator, VISSIM, was used to evaluate the effects of various interchange spacings on traffic conditions in terms of safety. In this study, the acceleration noise was used as an index to represent the stability of traffic conditions, which is a potential indicator to quantify the level of safety. It was found based on simulation evaluations that 5-km interchange spacing would be a feasible alternative under higher speed traffic conditions (around 160 km/h).

  • watches, air bearings and printed circuit hoards (PCB). However, it is not easy to determine optimum cutting conditions since the micro drilling process is very sensitive to various disturbances. Also, undesirable characteristics to optimize the micro drilling are small signal-to-noise ratios, drill wandering motions and high aspect ratios. Thus, in this study, experimental design methods are applied to determine optimum cutting conditions. Suing the methods, three cutting parameters, fred, step and curving speed are optimized to minimize thrust forces. Obtained conditions are verified through required experimental works. As the results, it is shown that the experimental methods can be applied to micro drilling processes to determine Optimum Cutting Conditions.

  • A multi-dimensional design is most easily constructed via the amalgamation of one-dimensional component block designs. However, not all sets of component designs are compatible to be amalgamated. The conditions for compatibility are related to the concept of a complete matching in a graph. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for unequal-replicate designs. Two types of conditions are proposed; one is based on the number of verices adjacent to at least one vertex and the other is ona a degree of vertex, in a bipartite graph. The former is an extension of the sufficient conditions of equal-replicate designs given by Dean an Lewis (1988).

  • High temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) using phosphoric acid (PA) doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes have been concentrated as one of solutions to the limits with traditional low temperature PEMFCs. However, the amount of reported experimental data is not enough to catch the operational characteristics correlated with cell performance and durability. In this study, design of experiments (DOE) based operational optimization method for high temperature PEMFCs has been proposed. Response surface method (RSM) is very useful to effectively analyze target system's characteristics and to optimize operating conditions for a short time. Thus RSM using central composite design (CCD) as one of methodologies for design of experiments (DOE) was adopted. For this work, the statistic models which predict the performance and degradation rate with respect to the operating conditions have been developed. The developed performance and degradation models exhibit a good agreement with experimental data. Compared to the existing arbitrary operation, the expected cell lifetime and average cell performance during whole operation could be improved by optimizing operating conditions. Furthermore, the proposed optimization method could find different new optimal solutions for operating conditions if the target lifetime of the fuel cell system is changed. It is expected that the proposed method is very useful to find optimal operating conditions and enhance performance and durability for many other types of fuel cell systems.

  • This paper describes experimental and theoretical investigations on the behaviour of thin walled composite (TWC) filled columns under eccentric loading conditions. Details of the experimental investigation including description of the test columns, testing arrangements, failure modes, strain characteristics, load-deformation responses and effects of various geometric and material parameters are presented. The current paper also introduces the use and effect of lightweight Volcanic Pumice Concrete (VPC) in TWC columns. Analytical models for the design of columns under eccentric loading conditions have been developed taking into consideration the effect of confined concrete. The performance of design equations is validated through experimental results. The proposed design models are found to produce better results compared with available design procedures and Code based formulations. A computer program is developed to generate the interaction diagrams based on the proposed design equations that can be used for design purposes.
