  • This paper proposes a unified structural account of some instances of the English Modals and Semi-auxiliaries. The classification and the syntactic/structural description of the English Modal auxiliary verbs and verb-related elements have long been the center for many proposals in the history of generative syntax. According to van Gelderen (1993) and Lightfoot (2002), it was sometime around 1380 that the Tense-node (T) appeared in the phrasal structures of the English language, and the T-node is under which the English Modal auxiliaries occupy. Closely related is the existing evidence that English Modals were used as main verbs up to the early sixteenth century (Lightfoot 1991, Han 2000). This paper argues for a bi-clausal approach to English Modal auxiliaries with the infinitival particle 'to' such as 'ought to' 'used to' and 'dare (to)' 'need (to)', etc. and Semi-auxiliaries including 'be to' and 'have to'. More specifically, 'ought' in 'ought to' constructions, for instance, undergoes V-to-T movement within the matrix clause, just like 'HAVEAux' and all instances of 'BE', whereas 'to' occupies the T position of the embedded complement clause. By proposing the bi-clausal account, Radford's (2004, 2009) problems can be solved. Further, the historical motivation for the account takes a stance along with Norde (2009) and Brinton & Traugott (2005) in that Radford's (2004, 2009) syncretization of the two positions of the infinitival particle 'to' is no different from the 'boundary loss' in the process of Grammariticalization. This line of argument supports Krug's (2011), and in turn Bolinger's(1980) generalization on Auxiliaryhood, while providing a novel insight into Head movement of V-to-T in Present Day English.

  • In this paper, a numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) is presented which models the eddy current testing (ECT) of tubes with 3-dimensional defects. For the description of 3-dimensional eddy current problems, the governing equation is derived from the Maxwell's equations. The 3-dimensional FEM formulation with hexahedral elements is carried out using the Galerkin weighted residual method. The INCONEL 600 steam generator tube with inner and outer diameter defects is adopted for the numerical analysis, and the ECT signal, which is the trajectory of the probe impedance, is calculated. For the verification of the numerical analysis method, results of numerical calculations and experiments are compared and they show good agreements. Based on this verification, several defect signals are predicted and their characteristics are investigated with the variation in the defect depth and the circumferential angle of the defect.

  • Analysis of mechanical behavior for a pultruded-wound hollow rod is presented. For this purpose, the pultruded-wound hollow rod is manufactured by the new winder attached to the conventional pultrusion system. And the conventional pultrusion process is newly altered to manufacture pultruded-wound specimens. A computer program, POST II, is modified to perform this study, In the nonlinear finite element formulation, the updated Lagrangian description method based on the second Piolar-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green strain tensor are used. For the finite element modeling of the composite hollow rod, the eight-node degenerated shell element is utilized. In order to estimate the failure, the maximum stress criterion is adopted to the averaged stress in the each layer of the finite elements. As numerical examples, the behavior of glass/up composite hollow rod is investigated from the initial loading to the final collapse. Present finite element results considering stiffness degradation and stress unload due to failure shows excellent agreement with experiments in the ultimate load, failure and deformations.

  • This study is to suggest the direction for KCR4's revision based on analysis of trends in cataloguing rules at home and abroad, characteristics of KCR4, and professional cataloguer's survey about revision of KCR4. Results of the study is summarized as follows. First, after Paris principles, the international attention to cataloguing rules is recently centered on ICP and RDA based on FRBR. Second, most cataloguing librarians feel confused over because KCR4 after 2003 is an unfinished rules without provisions on the authority control and heading's selection and form. So they want to revise KCR4. Third, the results of the professional cataloguer's survey showed mostly that KCR4 should be revised adopting international cataloguing rules like RDA and including contents of access points, detailed rules of the authority control, and the description in elements instead of resource's type.

  • The Canton Tower (formerly named Guangzhou New TV Tower) of 610 m high has been instrumented with a long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) system consisting of over 700 sensors of sixteen types. Under the auspices of the Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structures Technology (ANCRiSST), an SHM benchmark problem for high-rise structures has been developed by taking the instrumented Canton Tower as a host structure. This benchmark problem aims to provide an international platform for direct comparison of various SHM-related methodologies and algorithms with the use of real-world monitoring data from a large-scale structure, and to narrow the gap that currently exists between the research and the practice of SHM. This paper first briefs the SHM system deployed on the Canton Tower, and the development of an elaborate three-dimensional (3D) full-scale finite element model (FEM) and the validation of the model using the measured modal data of the structure. In succession comes the formulation of an equivalent reduced-order FEM which is developed specifically for the benchmark study. The reduced-order FEM, which comprises 37 beam elements and a total of 185 degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), has been elaborately tuned to coincide well with the full-scale FEM in terms of both modal frequencies and mode shapes. The field measurement data (including those obtained from 20 accelerometers, one anemometer and one temperature sensor) from the Canton Tower, which are available for the benchmark study, are subsequently presented together with a description of the sensor deployment locations and the sensor specifications.

  • For decades, general services and accounting officers have been dominant forces in collection development activities in college and university libraries in Korea. The role of certified librarians has been rather peripheral. This has been allowed by the fact that library acquisitions departments had to be headed by non-librarian general administrative officers by the government regulation. The philosophy behind this regulation was that acquiring library materials was not any different from simple purchasing act of other useful goods in the marketplace. In affiliation with the element of general administrative officers, domestic book-sellers also had a great influence in collection building activities in college and university libraries in Korea. This has been made possible by the fact that no other people could su n.0, pply library materials, especially foreign library materials. It has been pointed out for years that the mechanism in which general administrative officers and domestic book-sellers had a greater say in library acquisitions activities was especially inefficient in acquiring wanted materials in wanted speed and in wanted price. In this mechanism, books and periodicals were mere goods. They were not perceived as intellectual property holding information and knowledge in them. Since the student movement to revolutionize the library system of the Pusan National University, September 1987 to December 1988, the creative and progressive elements in this university library have been making great efforts to change the acquisitions system in this library into a more efficient one by putting certified librarians at the center of the whole acquisitions process. These efforts have been successful to a certain degree. In this discursive study of the case of the Pusan National University Library, I have tried to achieve a social description of the library process in which progressively motivated librarians succeeded in alienating administrative officers and book-sellers and in grasping in their hands the hegemony in the collection building aspect of library activities. It has been discovered that this was possible only when the librarians were mature enough to have their kind of professionalism, i.e., professional ethics and craftsmanship.

  • Several theoretical and analytical formulations for the prediction of shear strength in reinforced concrete (RC) beam-to-column joints have been recently developed. Some of these predictive models are included in the most recent seismic codes and currently used in practical design. On the other hand, the influence of the stiffness and strength degradations in RC joints on the seismic performance of RC framed buildings has been only marginally studied, and it is generally neglected in practice-oriented seismic analysis. To investigate such influence, this paper proposes a numerical description for representing the cyclic response of RC exterior joints. This is then used in nonlinear numerical simulations of RC frames subjected to earthquake loading. According to the proposed strategy, RC joints are modelled using nonlinear rotational spring elements with strength and stiffness degradations and limited ductility under cyclic loading. The proposed joint model has been firstly calibrated against the results from experimental tests on 12 RC exterior joints. Subsequently, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses have been carried out on two-, three- and four-storey RC frames, which represent realistic existing structures designed according to old standards. The numerical results confirm that the global seismic response of the analysed RC frames is strongly affected by the hysteretic damage in the beam-to-column joints, which determines the failure mode of the frames. This highlights that neglecting the effects of joints damage may potentially lead to non-conservative seismic assessment of existing RC framed structures.

  • In strong dramas, pot, character, and theme, three basic elements in dramatic structure, are effectively integrated forwards the same dramatic idea. Plot might be considered as the most important element to combine events and character. However, at some point of the script, the writer becomes less interested in the mechanics of the plot, and the characters take over, because audiences remember the characters or the situations more clearly than the plot. Therefore, the workshop of dramatic structure would be successful when it starts from excogitating the character and the situation, by improvising 'voices' of characters, building 'back story', and reconstructing 'outline from the antagonist's view'. With these exercises, the writer and the director understand the mechanics of dramatic plotting by characterization, which include the choice of the protagonist, and the description of plausible actions and the theme, and they consequentially find the way to obtain solidity and plausibility in the scenes.
