  • Gas hydrate (GH)-based desalination process have a potential as a novel unit desalination process. GHs are nonstoichiometric crystalline inclusion compounds formed at low temperature and a high pressure condition by water and a number of guest gas molecules. After formation, pure GHs are separated from the remaining concentrated seawater and they are dissociated into guest gas and pure water in a low temperature and a high pressure condition. The condition of GH formation is different depending on the type of guest gas. This is the reason why the guest gas is a key to success of GH desalination process. The salt rejection of GH based desalination process appeared 60.5-93%, post treatment process is needed to finally meet the product water quality. This study adopted reverse osmosis (RO) as a post treatment. However, the test about gas rejection by RO process have to be performed because the guest gas will be dissolved in a GH product (RO feed). In this research, removal potential of dissolved gas by RO process is performed using lab-scale RO system and GC/MS analysis. The relation between RO membrane characteristics and gas removal rate were analyzed based on the GC/MS measurement.

  • This study focused on safety aspects surrounding energy consumption in the seawater desalination process in the Daesan Industrial Complex located on the West Sea coast. The safety index for energy consumption was evaluated under different salinities and temperatures of the incoming seawater. Temperature and salinity input data for the 1997-2018 period were obtained from the Marine Environment Information System, and the power required for reverse osmosis (RO) was applied to the program as per the data provided by the RO membrane manufacturer (Q-Plus v3.0). Notably, reasonable energy consumption guidelines were proposed during the design of the desalination facilities; in this regard, the desalination process required approximately 2.10-2.90 kWh/m3 electrical power. Moreover, the energy safety based on 95 % was estimated to be 2.80 kWh/m3 when the desalination facility was operated.

  • Seawater desalination is a technology through which salt and other constituents are removed from seawater to produce fresh water. While a significant amount of fresh water is produced, the desalination process is limited by the generation of concentrated brine with a higher salinity than seawater; this imposes environmental and economic problems. In this study, characteristics of seawater from three different locations in South Korea were analyzed to evaluate the feasibility of crystallization to seawater desalination. Organic and inorganic substances participating in crystal formation during concentration were identified. Then, prediction and economic feasibility analysis were conducted on the actual water flux and obtainable salt resources (i.e. Na2SO4) using membrane distillation and energy-saving crystallizer based on multi-stage flash (MSF-Cr). The seawater showed a rather low salinity (29.9~34.4 g/L) and different composition ratios depending on the location. At high concentrations, it was possible to observe the participation of dissolved organic matter and various ionic substances in crystalization. When crystallized, materials capable of forming various crystals are expected. However, it seems that different salt concentrations should be considered for each location. When the model developed using the Aspen Plus modular was applied in Korean seawater conditions, relatively high economic feasibility was confirmed in the MSF-Cr. The results of this study will help solve the environmental and economic problems of concentrated brine from seawater desalination.

  • Importance of pretreatment for seawater desalination is growing rapidly. Proper selection of pretreatment is critical for the successful, long-term operation in the seawater desalination plant such as seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO). The purposes of seawater pretreatment are to remove particulate, colloidal materials, organic, inorganic materials, microorganisms and their by-products present in the seawater, and thus to improve the performance of seawater desalination systems. However, pretreatment is most challenging for designing and operating seawater desalination plants because of fluctuations of water qualities, site specifications and wide ranges of target materials present in the seawater to be treated. In addition, it is also becoming evident increasingly that microscopic algae are a major cause of operational problems, for example, membrane fouling which is long-standing problem in SWRO process. Pretreatment strategies prior to the operation of seawater desalination technologies should be even more complicated by algae blooms and release of their harmful by-products in marine environment. This paper reviews the roles of various pretreatment methods in seawater desalination process. Benefits and drawbacks are described, which should be taken into account in future studies on selecting pretreatment for seawater desalination process.

  • The optimum conditions for selective .elimination of salt from tuna boiled extract (TBE) by electrodialysis were determined. The desalination conditions of TBE were determined at various pH's, concentrations and volumes of TBE. The ion-exchange membrane with a molecular weight cut off 100Da was used for desalting of TBE. The desalination times on $1\%$ and $10\%$ of TBE concentrations were 40 min and 240 min, respectively. The electrodialysis process could removed above $95\%$ of the initial salt content in $1\%$ and $10\%$ of TBE concentrations. The desalination of TBE at pH 4.0 was $14\%$ higher than that at pH 9.0 The amount of water transferred by the electrodialysis was determined. The electrodialysis process could remove above $90\%$ of the initial salt content in $5\%$ TBE for 80 min. The initial volume and the permeate did not have significant effects on desalination time and ratio. The key parameters for the desalination of TBE were pH and concentration of TBA.

  • For selective elimination of salt in the boiled extract of baby neck clam (Tapes variegata, BEBNC), electrodialyzer was used and the desalination conditions of BEBNC were determined at various concentrations, pH's and volumes of BEBNC. The ion-exchange membrane with a molecular weight cut off 100 Da was used for desalting of BEBNC. The desalination times on BEBNC concentrations of 0.5% and 4% were 100 min and 170 min and the final desalting ratio was above 90%. 1'he desalination of BEBNC at pH 4.0 was 12% higher than that at pH 9.0 for 60 min. The electrodialysis process could remove above 90% of the initial salt content in 2% BEBNC of 1 L for 80 min. The results obtained prove that electrodialysis is a practical solution to the problem of selective elimination of salt from BEBNC.

  • The most important factor for the desalination system is the fresh water production cost dependent upon the possible energy source which should be obtained easily and with low price. Recently in Korea the demand of LNG, as a cheap and clean energy which does not cause an environmental problem, has sharply been increased. In general, LNG is storaged in a tank as a liquid state below -162 'C. When it is serviced, however, the LNG absorbs energy from a heating source and transforms to the gaseous state with high pressure. During this process a huge amount of cold energy accumulated in LNG is wasted. This waste cold energy can be utilized for producing fresh water from sea water using a sea water freezing desalination system. In order to develop a sea water freezing desalination system and to establish its design technique, a qualitative and quantitative data regarding the freezing behavior of sea water is needed in advance. The goal of this study, therefore, are to reveal the freezing mechanism of sea water, to measure the freezing rate, and to investigate the freezing heat-transfer characteristics. The experimental results help to provide a general understanding of the sea water freezing behavior in a Rectangular vessel cooled from below.

  • A steam jet vacuum system that will be implemented in a multi-effect desalination plant is numerically investigated. The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the performance characteristic of the steam jet vacuum system for the sea water distillation process. The effects of design parameter such as nozzle size and converging duct angle are discussed in order to get a better understanding of flow characteristics inside the steam ejector and subsequently pave the way for more optimum designs. The simulation results have been in good agreement with experimental data and have well reproduced the shock train phenomena of the throat region.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the clear day operating performances for the decentralized desalination system with the solar thermal system and the photovoltaic power system. In a clear day, we used a solar thermal system as heat source of the single-stage fresh water generator with plate-type heat exchangers and a photovoltaic power system as electric source for hydraulic pumps. The demonstration system generation was designed and installed at Jeju-island in 2006. The system was comprised of the desalination unit with daily fresh water capacity designed as $2m^3$, a $120m^3$ evacuated tubular solar collector to supply the heat, a $6m^3$ heat storage tank, and a 5.2kW photovoltaic power generation to supply the electricity of hydraulic pumps for the heat medium fluids. In a clear day, solar irradiance daily averaged was measured $518W/m^3$, the daily fresh water yield showed that about 565 liter.
