In this study, a CPT-based p-y analysis method was proposed for the displacement analysis of laterally loaded piles. Key consideration was the continuous soil profiling capability of CPT and cone resistance profiles that do not require artificial assumption or simplification for input parameter selection. The focus is on the application into offshore mono-piles embedded in clays. The correlations of p-y function components to the effective cone resistance were proposed, which can fully utilize CPT measurements. A case example was selected from the literature and used to validate the proposed method. Various parametric studies were performed to examine the effectiveness of the proposed method and investigate the effect of property profile and its depth resolution on the p-y analysis. It was found that the calculation could be largely misleading if wrongly interpreted sub-layer condition or inappropriate resolution of input soil profile was involved in the analyses. It was also found that there is a significant influence depth that dominates overall load response of pile. The soil profile and properties within this depth range affect most significantly calculated load responses, confirming that the soil profile within this depth range should be identified in more detail.

Siliceous and calcareous deep-sea core sediments were collected by a multiple corer from the KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area, northeast equatorial Pacific, to compare vane shear strengths measured by two different apparatuses and in different places of on-board and on-land laboratories. The apparatuses were 1) a hand-held vane with four blades of $2.0{\times}2.0$ cm, and 2) a motorized shear vane system with four blades of $1.0{\times}0.88$ attached on a rotational viscometer. Depth profiles of shear strengths of core samples determined by the apparatuses do not show any consistent difference. Also, there is no consistent difference between shear strength values measured on-board and on-land laboratories after storing the core samples for three months in a cold room by a motorized shear vane system. However, there are considerable differences between depth profiles of shear strengths measured at four different points (holes) of a core sample. Moreover, significant differences among the profiles of different tube samples from a multiple corer within a sampling station were observed. Heterogeneity in physical properties of each depth and sediment column, possibly due to bioturbation and bottom current flows, is likely responsible for the differences in the geotechnical properties.

To characterize quantitatively the transport of $^{99}Tc$ and the global fallout ($^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$, and $^{239+240}Pu$) for soils in Korea, the transport parameters of a convective-dispersion model, apparent migration velocity, and apparent dispersion coefficient were estimated from the vertical depth profiles of the radionuclides in soils. The vertical profiles of $^{99}Tc$ were measured from a pot experiment for paddy soil that had been sampled from a rice-field around the Gyeongju radioactive waste repository in Korea, and the vertical depth distributions of the global fallout $^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$, and $^{239+240}Pu$ were measured from the soil samples that were taken from local areas in Korea. The front edge of the $^{99}Tc$ profiles reached a depth of about 12 cm in 138 days, indicating a faster movement than the fallout radionuclides. A weak adsorption of $^{99}Tc$ on the soil particles by the formation of Tc(VII) and a high water infiltration velocity seemed to have controlled the migration of $^{99}Tc$. The apparent migration velocity and dispersion coefficient of $^{99}Tc$ for the disturbed paddy soil were 2.88 cm/y and 6.3 $cm^2/y$, respectively. The majority of the global fallout $^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$, and $^{239+240}Pu$ were found in the top 20 cm of the soils even after a transport of about 30 years. The transport parameters for the global fallout radionuclides were 0.01-0.1cm/y ($^{137}Cs$), 0.09-0.13cm/y ($^{90}Sr$), and 0.09-0.18cm/y ($^{239+240}Pu$) for the apparent migration velocity: 0.21-1.09 $cm^2/y$ ($^{137}Cs$), 0.12-0.7$cm^2/y$ ($^{90}Sr$), and 0.09-0.36$cm^2/y$ ($^{239+240}Pu$) for the apparent dispersion coefficient.
In order to support the load of the train with enough stiffness, a study on an effective method for the characterization of the stiffness of the compacted subgrade is required. In this study, the crosshole-type dynamic cone penetrometer (CDCP) is used for the stiffness characterization of the subgrade along the depth. For the application of the CDCP test, three points of compacted subgrades are selected as the study sites. For the study sites, CDCP test, in-situ density test, and light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) test are conducted. As the results of CDCP tests, shear wave velocity profiles are obtained by using the travel times and the travel distances of the shear waves along the depth. In addition, maximum shear modulus ($G_{max}$) profiles are estimated by using the density of the subgrades and the shear wave velocity profiles. The averaged maximum shear moduli at each testing point are highly correlated with the dynamic deflection moduli ($E_{vd}$) determined by LFWD tests. Therefore, a reliable stiffness characterization of the subgrade can be conducted by using CDCP tests. In addition, because CDCP characterizes the stiffness of the subgrade along the depth rather than a representative value, CDCP test may be effectively used for the stiffness characterization of the subgrade.

Depth calculation of objects in a scene from images is one of the most studied processes in the fields of image processing, computer vision, and photogrammetry. Conventionally, depth is calculated using a pair of overlapped images captured at different view points. However, there have been studies to calculate depths from a single image. Theoretically, it is known to be possible to calculate depth using the diameter of CoC (Circle of Confusion) caused by defocus under the assumption of a thin lens model. Thus, this study aims to verify the validity of the thin lens model to calculate depth from edge blur amount which corresponds to the radius of CoC. For this study, a commercially available DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera was used to capture a set of target sheets which had different edge contrasts. In order to find out the pattern of the variations of edge blur against varying combination of FD (Focusing Distance) and OD (Object Distance), the camera was set to varying FD and target sheet images were captured at varying OD under each FD. Then, the edge blur and edge displacement were estimated from edge slope profiles using a brute-force method. The experimental results show that the pattern of the variations of edge blur observed in the target images was apart from their corresponding theoretical amounts derived under the thin lens assumption but can still be utilized to calculate depth from a single image for the cases similar to the limited conditions experimented under which the tendency between FD and OD is manifest.

Analytic solutions for the gradient of surface elevation and vertical profiles of velocity driven by the wind stress in the one-dimensional rectangular basin were obtained under the assumption of steady-state. The approach treats the bottom frictional stress $\tau$$_{b}$ as known and includes vertically varying eddy viscosity $textsc{k}$$_{M}$, which is constant, linear and quadratic of water depth. When the $\tau$$_{b}$ is param-terized with surface stress, depth averaged velocity and bottom velocity, the result shows the relation of the no-slip bottom velocity condition and the bottom frictional stress $\tau$$_{b}$. The results of a mode splitted, (x-$\sigma$) coordinate, numerical model were compared with the derived analytic solutions. The comparison was made for the case such that $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ is the constant, linear and quadratic function of water depth. In the case of constant $textsc{k}$$_{M}$, the gradient of surface elevation and vertical profiles of velocity are discussed for a uniform depth, a mild slope and a relatively steep slope. When $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ is a linear and quadratic function of water depth, the vertical structures of velocities are discussed for various $\tau$$_{b}$. The result of the comparison shows that the vertical structure of velocities depends not only on the value of $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ but also on the profile of $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ and bottom stress $\tau$$_{b}$. Model results were in a good agreement with the analytic solutions considered in this study.his study.y.his study.

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a traditional and representative geophysical method for determining the resistivity distributions of surrounding soil and rock volumes. Depth resolution profiles and sensitivity distribution sections of the resistivities with respect to various electrode configurations are calculated and investigated using numerical model data. Shallow vertical resolution decreases in the order of Wenner, Schlumberger, and dipole-dipole arrays. A high investigable depth in homogeneous medium is calculated to be 0.11-0.19 times the active electrode spacing, but is counterbalanced by a low vertical resolution. For the application of ERT depth resolution profiles and sensitivity distributions, we provide subsurface structure models for two types of land-creping failure (planar and curved), subvertical fracture, and weathered layer over felsic and mafic igneous rocks. The dipole-dipole configuration appears to be most effective for mapping land-creeping failure planes (especially for curved planes), whereas the Wenner array gives the best resolution of soil horizons and shallow structures in the weathered zone.

To visualize the characteristics of vertical seawater temperature data, in the ocean having 3D spatial characteristics, 2D thematic maps like horizontal seawater temperature distribution map at each depth layer and 3D volume model using 3D spatial interpolation are used. Although these methods are useful to understand oceanographic phenomena visually, there is a limit to analyze the spatial pattern of vertical temperature distribution or the relationship between vertical temperature characteristics and other oceanic factors (seawater chemistry, marine organism, climate change, etc). Therefore, this study aims to determine the spatial distribution characteristics of vertical temperature profiles in the South Sea of Jeju by quantifying the characteristics of vertical temperature profiles by using an algorithm that can extract the thermocline parameters, such as mixed layer depth, maximum temperature gradient and thermocline thickness. For this purpose spatial autocorrelation index (Moran's I) was calculated including mapping of spatial distribution for three parameters representing the vertical temperature profiles. Also, after grouping study area as four regions by using cluster analysis with three parameters, the characteristics of vertical temperature profiles were defined for each region.

An embedded length of monopile caused by a scouring should be evaluated to monitor the stability of offshore foundations, because offshore foundations are affected by horizontal load. The objective of this study is to evaluate the scouring around offshore foundation by using electrical resistivity and to estimate ground stiffness by using shear wave tomography. The electrical resistivity profiles and shear wave tomography were measured according to the scour depth of model ground prepared with sand and cement. Several electrodes and bender elements were used to measure the electrical resistivity and shear waves, respectively. The electrode sets are attached on the monopile surface and bender elements are arranged in $7{\times}7$ arrays by using nylone frames. The electrical resistivity profiles and shear wave tomography are acquired by laboratory experiment. Maximum scour depth was estimated by electrical resistivity profiles and the ground stiffness of model ground was estimated by shear wave tomography. This study suggests that the electrical resistivity profiles and shear wave tomography may be useful for monitoring the stability of the offshore foundations.
Shear wave velocity is commonly invoked in explaining geophysical phenomena and in solving geotechnical engineering problems. In particular, the importance of shear wave velocity in geotechnical earthquake engineering has been widely recognized for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation. In the present study, various insitu seismic tests were performed to evaluate geotechnical dynamic characteristics at 183 sites in Korea, and shear wave velocity profiles with depth were determined to be representative of the dynamic properties at the investigated sites. Subsurface soil and rock layers at the target sites were reclassified into five geotechnical layers: fill, alluvial soil, weathered soil, weathered rock, and bedrock, taking into account their general uses in geotechnical earthquake engineering practice. Average shear wave velocity profiles for the five geotechnical layers were obtained by synthesizing the shear wave velocity profiles from seismic tests in the field. Based on the profiles, a representative shear wave velocity value was determined for each layer, for use in engineering seismology and geotechnical earthquake engineering.
