  • Graphite has excellent mechanical and physical properties. It is known to advanced materials and is used to materials for molds, thermal treatment of furnace, sinter of diamond and cemented carbide tool etc. SiC materials are coated on the surface and holes of graphite to protect particles emitted from porous graphite with 5%~20% porosity and make graphite hard surface. SiC materials have high durability and thermal stability. Thermal CVD method is widely used to manufacture SiC thin films but high cost of machine investment and production are required. SiC thin films manufactured by Si reaction liquid and vapore with carbon are effective because of low cost of machine and production. SiC thin films made by vapor silicon infiltration into porous graphite can be obtained for shorter time than liquid silicon. Si materials are evaporated to the graphite surface in about $10^{-2}$ torr and high temperature. Si materials are melted in $1410^{\circ}C$. Si vapor is infiltrated into the surface hole of porous graphite and $Si_xC_y$ compound is made. $Si_x$ component is proportional to the Si vapor concentration. Si diffusion coefficient is estimated from quadratic equation obtained by Fick's second law. The steady stae is assumed. Si concentration variation for the depth from graphite surface is fitted to quadratic equation. Diffusion coefficient of Si vapor is estimated at about $10^{-8}cm^2s^{-1}$.

  • The corrosion of reinforcement induced by chloride ingress is the main deterioration cause of coastal reinforced concrete structures. In this paper, an experimental study was executed to investigate the effect of the kinds and replacement ratios of mineral admixtures (fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag silica fume and meta-kaolin), W/B and curing time on chloride diffusion of concrete by long-time immersion test in chloride solution. According to the result, the use of mineral admixtures was effective in improving the resistant to chloride ingress. The chloride penetration depth and diffusion coefficient were decreased as replacement ratios of mineral admixture were increased. The kind and replacement ratio of the mineral admixture are more important than the W/B in reducing the chloride diffusion of concrete. Chloride binding capacity of mineral admixture, which was sequenced in the order of MK

  • This study were evaluated the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC). Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evalate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC are effected on the mix proportion factor including latex content, and water-cement ratio.

  • We investigate the diffusion process of Thomson-scattered line photons in both real space and frequency space through a Monte Carlo approach. The emission source is assumed to be monochromatic and point-like embedded at the center of a free electron region in the form of a sphere and a slab. In the case of a spherical region, the line profiles emergent at a location of Thomson optical depth τTh from the source exhibit the full width of the half maximum σλ ≃ τ1.5Th. In the slab case, we focus on the polarization behavior where the polarization direction flips from the normal direction of the slab to the parallel as the slab optical depth τTh increases from τTh ≪ 1 to τTh ≫ 1. We propose that the polarization flip to the parallel direction to the slab surface in optically thick slabs is attributed to the robustness of the Stokes parameter Q along the vertical axis with respect to the observer's line of sight whereas randomization dominates the remaining region as τTh increases. A brief discussion on the importance of our study is presented.

  • The most suitable condition for plasma source ion implantation(PSII) was found based on the study of the characteristics of PSIIed tool and machined surfaces. The depth analysis according to the chemical bonding state of elements and surface component elements through the XPS and SIMS, was conducted to find the improved property of the PSIIed surface. Due to the diffusion of PSII, the nitrogen was found up to a depth of about 150nm according to the supplied voltage and ion implanted time. The deep diffusion by nitrogen caused the surface modification, but the formation of oxide component was found due to the residual gas contamination on the surface. Statistical method of ANOVA was conducted to find the effects of spindle speed and feed rate in interaction for machined surface roughness with PSIIed tools. The surface modification was found largely occurred by the nitrogen implanted surface with 2 hours for 27kV, 35kV and 43kV.

  • Chloride penetration is considered as a most crucial factor for the determination of the service life of concrete. A lot of experimental tools for the chloride penetration into concrete have been developed, however, the mechanism was based on only diffusion, although permeability is also main driving forces for the chloride penetration. Permeation reacts on submerged concrete impacting for short to long term durability while capillary suction occurs on only dried concrete for very early time. Furthermore, hydrostatic pressure increases in proportional to measured depth from the surface of water because of the increasing weight of water exerting downward force from above. It is thought, therefore, that the water pressure has a great influence on the chloride penetration and thereby on the service life of marine concrete. In this study, new experiment is designed to examine the effect of water pressure on chloride penetration in concrete quantitatively. As an experiment result, pressure leaded a quick chlorides penetration by a certain depth, while diffusion induced chlorides to penetrate inward slowly. Therefore, it was concluded that chloride should penetrates significantly by water pressure and the phenomena should be accelerated for concrete exposed to deep sea. The research is expected as a framework to define the service life of submerged concrete with water pressure and compute water permeability coefficient of cementitious materials.

  • Multimode planar waveguides have been fabricated by an electric-field assisted ion exchange in soda-lime glass substrates. Measurements of the mode indices have been made and the index profiles modeled on modified Fermi function are explained by a comparative analysis with the concentration profiles obtained using an electron probe X-ray micro analyzer. The analytical measurements showed that no more than 95% of sodium ions were replaced by the cesium ions. We established formulas for guide depth, mobility, and refractive index change, given the applied electric field, the diffusion temperature, and the time. We have verified the linear relations in the formulas not only between guide and root of diffusion time but also between guide depth and the applied electric filed experimentally.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the vertical stress properties in sandy soil according to changes of loading type in soil bin compacted three layers. The following conclusions and comparisons have been made based on careful analysis from theoretical and experimental methods. : When sandy soil subjected to cycle-loading, compression of foundation and diffusion of vertical stress increment(${\Delta}{\sigma}_2$) were influenced by magnitude of loading plate. When sandy soil subjected to reloading after removing of pre-loading, the distribution of ${\Delta}{\sigma}_2$ depth at one time of loading plate width was different from its distribution at more deep point cause of load hysteresis, so in case of design of structure, the effect of ${\Delta}{\sigma}_2$ as depth must be considered. The increment of vertical stress will be different as loading condition and foundation depth, the loading condition must be considered in case of structure design.

  • An optically controlled silicon MESFET (OPFET) was fabricated by diffusion process to enhance the quantum efficiency, which is the most important optoelectronic device performance usually affected by ion implantation process due to large number of process induced defects. The desired impurity distribution profile and the junction depth were obtained solely with diffusion, and etching processes monitored by atomic force microscope, spreading resistance profiling and C-V measurements. With this approach fabrication induced defects are reduced, leading to significantly improved performance. The fabricated OPFET devices showed proper I-V characteristics with desired pinch-off voltage and threshold voltage for normally-on devices. The peak photoresponsivity was obtained at 620 nm wavelength and the extracted external quantum efficiency from the photoresponse plot was found to be approximately 87.9%. This result is evidence of enhancement of device quantum efficiency fabricated by the diffusion process. It also supports the fact that the diffusion process is an extremely suitable process for fabrication of high performance optoelectronic devices. The maximum gain of OPFET at optical modulated signal was obtained at the frequency of 1 MHz with rise time and fall time approximately of 480 nS. The extracted transconductance shows the possible potential of device speed performance improvements for shorter gate length. The results support the use of a diffusion process for fabrication of high performance optoelectronic devices.
