Sensor network applications need synchronized time extremely such as object tracking, consistent state updates, duplicate detection, and temporal order delivery. This paper describes reliable time synchronization protocol (RTSP) for wireless sensor networks. In the proposed method, synchronization error is decreased by creating hierarchical tree with lower depth and reliability is improved by maintaining and updating information of candidate parent nodes. The RTSP reduces recovery time and communication overheads comparing to TPSN when there are topology changes owing to moving of nodes, running out of energy and physical crashes. Simulation results show that RTSP has about 20% better performance than TPSN in synchronization accuracy. And the number of message in the RTSP is $20%{\sim}60%$ lower than that in the TPSN when nodes are failed in the network. In case of different transmission range of nodes, the communication overhead in the RTSP is reduced up to 40% than that in the TPSN at the maximum.

The mechanical strength of silicon carbide dose nor permit the use of diffusion as a means to achieve selective doping as required by most electronic devices. While epitaxial layers may be doped during growth, ion implantation is needed to define such regions as drain and source wells, junction isolation regions, and so on. Ion activation without an annealing cap results in serious crystal damage as these activation processes must be carried out at temperatures on the order of 1600$^{\circ}C$. Ion implanted silicon carbide that is annealed in either a vacuum or argon environment usually results in a surface morphology that is highly irregular due to the out diffusion of Si atoms. We have developed and report a successful process of using silicon overpressure, provided by silane in a CAD reactor during the anneal, to prevent the destruction of the silicon carbide surface, This process has proved to be robust and has resulted in ion activation at a annealing temperature of 1600$^{\circ}C$ without degradation of the crystal surface as determined by AFM and RBS. In addition XPS was used to look at the surface and near surface chemical states for annealing temperatures of up to 1700$^{\circ}C$. The surface and near surface regions to approximately 6 nm in depth was observed to contain no free silicon or other impurities thus indicating that the process developed results in an atomically clean SiC surface and near surface region within the detection limits of the instrument(${\pm}$1 at %).

BACKGROUND: Contamination of source water by odorous compounds are one of the problems related to the water quality management, especially in Korea where surface water is used as drinking water. Geosmin (1, 10-trans-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol) and 2-MIB (2-methyl isoborneol : 1,2,7,7-tetramethyl-exo-bicycloheptan-2-ol) are commonly recognized earthy-musty odor compounds produced by algae causing serious problems to the drinking water purification facilities. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, spatial and temporal distribution of the odor compounds, geosmin and 2-MIB were investigated along with the development of phytoplankton in the Daechung reservoir from July 2012 to October 2013. CONCLUSION: Concentrations and frequencys of detection of both compounds increased from April to October which were related to cyanobacterial bloom periods. However, concentrations of odor compounds were not related to the number of cyanobacteria. Concentrations of both cyanobacteria and geosmin showed similar trends with depth. Pearson correlation analyses showed that geosmin concentration exhibited significant correlation with the count of Anabaena macrospora and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae. On the other hand, 2-MIB concentration showed a significant correlation with the count of Anabaena smithii.
The purpose of this research was development of quantitative ultrasonic test methodology for detecting internal defects in members of ancient wooden building. Connection part between wooden members and/or contacted or hidden part by wall of ceiling or other construction materials make it hard to apply direct way of ultrasonic test. So indirect way of ultrasonic test needed to be applied. Test methodology with newly developed prototype of ultrasonic system was proposed. Homogeneous material with polypropylene was also tested for establishing the criterion. Results showed that TOF(time of flight)-energy and pulse length were found out to be proper ultrasonic parameters for predicting depth of defect in wood different from polypropylene. It was not possible to directly apply prediction equation derived from polypropylene. Newly established prediction equation shows coefficient of determination of 0.73 for wood. Finally, defect of replaced rafter members was predicted with the coefficient of determination of 0.32. Various aspects of ultrasound propagation in wood including anisotropy need to be carefully considered to raise up the prediction accuracy.

The defects on the metal surface. such as the ended circular pressed hole. the penetrated circular drilled hole, and the linear hollow lanes have been investigated by means of the microwave. In this experiment, frequency was set at 9.2GHz with 3kHz modulation, and the methods of reflection, transmission, fixed carrier frequency, and mod-demodulated technique have been used for investigating defects. The magnitudes of the microwave signals have been changed at the ended circular pressed hole and the penetrated circular drilled hole. The defect sizes that were estimated from the reflected microwave signals had the dimensions enlarged by twice the original size of the penetrated circular drilled hole and 2.5 times the original size of the ended circular pressed hole. The magnitudes of the reflected microwave signals from the linear hollow lane have increased with expansion of the width of the notch. In the linear hollow lane with the depth of 2.4mm, the reflected microwave signals versus the defect widths had a maximum value at the defect width of 50mm, and in the linear hollow lanes with the depths of 1.2mm and 0.45mm, the reflected microwave signals versus the defects widths had the maximum values each at the defect depths of 55mm.

A circumferential guided wave method was developed to detect the axial crack on the bent feeder pipe. Dispersion curves of circumferential guided waves were calculated as a function of curvature of the pipe. In the case of thin plate, i.e. infinite curvature, as the frequency increases, the $S_0$ and $A_0$ mode coincide and eventually become Rayleigh wave mode. In the case of pipe, however, as the curvature increases, the lowest modes do not coincide even in the high frequencies. Based on the analysis, a rocking technique using angle beam transducer was applied to detect an axial defect in the bent region of PHWR feeder pipe. Based on the analysis of experimenal data for artificial notches, the vibration modes of each signal were identified. It was found that the notches with the depth of )0% of wall thickness can be detected with the method.

In real system application, the 3-D obstacle avoidance system for the autonomous control of the underwater flight vehicle (UFV) operates with the following problems: the sonar offers the range/bearing information of obstacles in a local detection area, it requires the system that has reduced acoustic noise and power consumption in terms of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), it has the UFV operation constraints such as maximum pitch and depth, and it requires an easy design procedure in terms of its structures and parameters. To solve these problems, an intelligent 3-D obstacle avoidance algorithm using the evolution strategy (ES) and the fuzzy logic controller (FLC), is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the 3-D obstacle avoidance of UFV is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively solves the problems in the real system application.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), which belongs to the attaching and effacing diarrheagenic E. coli strains, is a major causative agent of life-threatening diarrhea in infants in developing countries. Most EPEC isolates correspond to certain O serotypes; however, many strains are non-typeable. Two EPEC strains, EPEC001 and EPEC080, which could not be serotyped during routine detection, were isolated. In this study, we conducted an in-depth characterization of their putative O-antigen gene clusters (O-AGCs) and also performed constructed mutagenesis of the O-AGCs for functional analysis of O-antigen (OAg) synthesis. Sequence analysis revealed that the occurrence of O-AGCs in EPEC001 and E. coli O132 may be mediated by recombination between them, and EPEC080 and E. coli O2/O50 might acquire each O-AGC from uncommon ancestors. We also indicated that OAg-knockout bacteria were highly adhesive in vitro, except for the EPEC001 wzy derivative, whose adherent capability was less than that of its wild-type strain, providing direct evidence that OAg plays a key role in EPEC pathogenesis. Together, we identified two EPEC O serotypes in silico and experimentally, and we also studied the adherent capabilities of their OAgs, which highlighted the fundamental and pathogenic role of OAg in EPEC.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and validity of subgingival bacterial sampling using a retraction cord, and to evaluate how well this sampling method reflected changes in periodontal conditions after periodontal therapy. Methods: Based on clinical examinations, 87 subjects were divided into a healthy group (n=40) and a periodontitis group (n=47). Clinical measurements were obtained from all subjects including periodontal probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and the plaque index. Saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) as a subgingival bacterial sample were sampled before and 3 months after periodontal therapy. The salivary and subgingival bacterial samples were analyzed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction to quantify the following 11 periodontal pathogens: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Tannerella forsythus (Tf), Treponema denticola (Td), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), Pavimonas micra (Pm), Campylobacter rectus (Cr), Prevotella nigrescens (Pn), Eikenella corrodens (Ec), and Eubacterium nodatum (En). Results: Non-surgical periodontal therapy resulted in significant decreases in PD (P<0.01), CAL (P<0.01), and BOP (P<0.05) after 3 months. Four species (Pg, Tf, Pi, and Pm) were significantly more abundant in both types of samples in the periodontitis group than in the healthy group. After periodontal therapy, Cr was the only bacterium that showed a statistically significant decrease in saliva, whereas statistically significant decreases in Cr, Pg, and Pn were found in GCF. Conclusions: Salivary and subgingival bacterial sampling with a gingival retraction cord were found to be equivalent in terms of their accuracy for differentiating periodontitis, but GCF reflected changes in bacterial abundance after periodontal therapy more sensitively than saliva.
A vanishing point is a point on an image to which parallel lines projected from a real space gather. A vanishing point in a road space provides important spatial information. It is possible to improve the position of an extracted lane or generate a depth map image using a vanishing point in the road space. In this paper, we propose a method of detecting vanishing points on images taken from a vehicle's point of view using Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HoG). The proposed algorithm is divided into a HoG feature extraction step, in which the edge direction is extracted by dividing an image into blocks, a DNN learning step, and a test step. In the learning stage, learning is performed using 2,300 road images taken from a vehicle's point of views. In the test phase, the efficiency of the proposed algorithm using the Normalized Euclidean Distance (NormDist) method is measured.
