  • The development projects distort the natural water circulation system and increase the non-point source pollution by changing the natural cover type. The low impact development (LID) techniques are considering as new development approach to decrease the ecological- and hydrological impacts from high imperviousness rate. The high imperviousness rate is because of the construction of building, parking lot and road for human activities. Knowing the basic characteristics of rood runoff can give the direction for setting up the water management strategy. The monitoring results show the pollutant EMCs of roof runoff are 3~13 times lower than EMCs of the road and parking lot. The pollutant sources from roof runoff are mainly from leafs, cigarette butts, atmospheric deposition and materials of the roof. The EMC is occurred around 15minutes later after starting runoff and more than 8 storm events are needed to have the average EMCs.

  • Using low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), we have developed selectively area epitaxy (SAE). Using the developed SAE technology, we have grown AlGaAs/GaAs multi layers and InGaAs/GaAs quantum wire structures on the selectively $SiO_2$ masked GaAs substrates. We have obtained triangular shaped AlGaAs/GaAs and InGaAs/GaAs structures with sharp tips and smooth sidewalls. To rod the optimum conditions, several growth parameters such as growth rate, V/III ratio, growth temperature, and direction of the opening stripes were investigated. The emission peak from quantum wires was observed at 975 nm. With increasing of temperature the emission intensity from side wall quantum wells decreased abruptly. But the intensity from Quantum wires decreased slowly compared to that of side wall quantum wells and it became even stronger from above 50 K.

  • A dimensionally stable anode based on the $RuO_2$ electrocatalyst is an important electrode for generating chlorine. The $RuO_2$ is well-known as an electrode material with high electrocatalytic performance and stability. In this study, sonoelectrodeposition is proposed to synthesize the $RuO_2$ electrodes. The electrode obtained by this novel process shows better electrocatalytic properties and stability for generating chlorine compared to the conventional one. The high roughness and outer surface area of the $RuO_2$ electrode from a new fabrication process leads to increase in the chlorine generation rate. This enhanced performance is attributed to the accelerated mass transport rate of the chloride ions from electrolyte to electrode surface. In addition, the electrode with sonodeposition method showed higher stability than the conventional one, which might be explained by the mass coverage enhancement. The effect of sonodeposition time was also investigated, and the electrode with longer deposition time showed higher electrocatalytic performance and stability.

  • Optical dating, using infrared stimulation of K-feldspar grains, was undertaken to determine the sedimentation rate of a recently deposited tidal flat on the western coast of Korea. Very low luminescence of the natural surface sample confirms that the materials we investigated were well bleached at deposition. The five IRSL ages obtained show a reasonable stratigraphic correlation with the expected sedimentation rate of approximately 50cm/100yr. In addition the recuperation effect due to thermal transfer was discussed. We conclude that the optical dating used here shows a great promise to determine the sedimentation rates of tidal flats.

  • As an environment-friendly alternative energy resource, ethanol may be used to obtain hydrogen, a clean energy source. Thus, studies on catalytic reactions involving ethanol have been studied to understand the underlying principles in the reaction mechanism using various oxide-supported catalysts. Among them, Au-based catalysts have shown a superior activity in producing hydrogen gas. In the present study, Au/$TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation method to understand their catalytic activities toward ethanol and acetaldehyde with increasing gold loading, especially at the very low Au loading regime. A commercially available $TiO_2$ (Degussa P-25) was employed and the Au loading was varied to 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 wt% respectively. The catalysts showed characteristic x-ray diffraction (XRD) features at $2{\theta}=78.5^{\circ}$ that could be assigned to the presence of gold nanoparticles. Its reactivity measurements were performed under a constant flow of ethanol and acetaldehyde at a flow rate of ${\sim}0.6{\mu}mol/sec$ and the substrate temperature was slowly raised at a rate of 0.2 K/sec. We observed that the overall reactivity of the catalysts increased with increasing Au loading along with selectivity favoring dehydrogenation to product hydrogen gas. In addition, we disclosed various reaction channels involving competitive reaction paths such as dehydrogenation, dehydration, and condensation. In addition, subsequent reactions of acetaldehyde obtained from dehydrogenation of ethanol, were found to occur and produce butene, crotonaldehyde, furan, and benzene. Based on the results, we proposed overall reaction pathways of such reaction channels.

  • Low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LPMOCVD) of $Li_2O$ solid thin films from Li(DPM) in nitrogen-oxygen or argon-oxygen atmosphere was experimentally investigated by using a small hot wall tubular type reactor. XRD and ESCA analysis revealed that $Li_2CO_3$ film grew in nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere and $Li_2O$ grew in argon-oxygen atmosphere. The grown lithium oxide or carbonate reacted with silicon or silica base materials to produce silicates. The CVD model analysis by means of the well-known micro trench method and Monte Carlo simulation was not fully successful, but a set of data on gas phase reaction rate constant and surface reaction constant was obtained.

  • The silicon-containing Diamond-like Carbon (Si-DLC) film as an low friction coefficient coating has especially treated a different silicon content by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process at $500^{\circ}C$ on nitrided-STD 11 mold steel with (TMS) gas flow rate. The effects of variable silicon content on the Si-DLC films were tested with relative humidity of 5, 30 and 85% using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The wear-tested and original surface of Si-DLC films were analysed for an understanding of physical and chemical characterization, including a changing structure, via Raman spectra and nano hardness test. The results of Raman spectra have inferred a changing intra-structure from dangling bonds. And high silicon containing DLC films have shown increasing carbon peak ratio ($I_D/I_G$) values and G-peak values. In particular, the tribological tested surface of Si-DLC was shown the increasing hardness value in proportional to TMS gas flow rate. Therefore, at same time, the structure of the Si-DLC film was changed to a different intra-structure and increased hardness film with mechanical shear force and chemical reaction.

  • This paper describes the radiation doses to human and non-human biota in the Republic of Korea, as a result of the Fukushima nuclear accident. By using the measured airborne activity and ground deposition, the effective and thyroid doses of five human age groups (infant, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and adult) were estimated by the ECOSYS code, and the whole body absorbed dose rate of the eight Korean reference animals and plants (RAPs) was estimated by the K-BIOTA (the Korean computer code to assess the risk of radioactivity to wildlife). The first-year effective and thyroid human doses ranged from 5.7E-5 mSv in the infant group to 2.0E-4 mSv in the 5 years group, and from 5.0E-4 mSv in the infant group to 3.4E-3 mSv in the 5 years group, respectively. The life-time (70 years) effective and thyroid human doses ranged from 1.5E-4 mSv in the infant group to 3.0E-4 mSv in the 5 years group, and from 6.0E-4 mSv in the infant group to 3.5E-3 mSv in the 5 years group, respectively. The estimated maximum whole body absorbed dose rate to the Korean RAPs was 6.7E-7 mGy/d for a snake living in soil (terrestrial biota), and 2.0E-5 mGy/d for freshwater fish (aquatic biota), both of which were far less than the generic dose criteria to protect biota from ionizing radiation. Also, the screening level assessment for ERICA's (Environmental Risks from Ionizing Contaminants: Assessments and management) limiting organisms showed that the risk quotient (RQ) for the estimated maximum soil and water activity was significantly less than unity for both the terrestrial and freshwater organisms. Conclusively, the radiological risk of the radioactivity released into the environment by the Fukushima nuclear accident to the public and the non-human biota in the republic of Korea is considered negligible.

  • Recently, advances in ZnO based oxide semiconductor materials have accelerated the development of thin-film transistors (TFTs), which are the building blocks for active matrix flat-panel displays including liquid crystal displays (LCD) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). However, the electrical performances of oxide semiconductors are significantly affected by interactions with the ambient atmosphere. Jeong et al. reported that the channel of the IGZO-TFT is very sensitive to water vapor adsorption. Thus, water vapor passivation layers are necessary for long-term current stability in the operation of the oxide-based TFTs. In the present work, $Al_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on poly ether sulfon (PES) and $SnO_x$-based TFTs by electron cyclotron resonance atomic layer deposition (ECR-ALD). And enhancing the WVTR (water vapor transmission rate) characteristics, barrier layer structure was modified to $Al_2O_3/TiO_2$ layered structure. For example, $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ single layer, $Al_2O_3/TiO_2$ double layer and $Al_2O_3/TiO_2/Al_2O_3/TiO_2$ multilayer were studied for enhancement of water vapor barrier properties. After thin film water vapor barrier deposited on PES substrate and $SnO_x$-based TFT, thin film permeation characteristics were three orders of magnitude smaller than that without water vapor barrier layer of PES substrate, stability of $SnO_x$-based TFT devices were significantly improved. Therefore, the results indicate that $Al_2O_3/TiO_2$ water vapor barrier layers are highly proper for use as a passivation layer in $SnO_x$-based TFT devices.

  • The transport and deposition of corrosion products in pressurized water nuclear reactor (PWR) steam generators have led to corrosion (SCC, denting etc.) problems. Lancing, mechanical cleaning and chemical cleaning have been used to reduce these problems. The methods of lancing and mechanical cleaning have limitations in removing corrosion products due to the structure of steam generator tubes. But high temperature chemical cleaning (HTCC) with EDTA is the most effective method to remove corrosion products regardless of the structure. However, EDTA in chemical cleaning aqueous solution and chemical cleaning environments affects the integrity of materials used in steam generators. The nuclear power plants have to perform the pre-test (also called as qualification test (QT)) that confirms the effect on the integrity of materials after HTCC. This is one of the series studies that assess the effect, and this study determines the effects of 20 % EDTA aqueous solution on defective tubes in high temperature chemical cleaning environments. The depth and magnitude of defects in steam generator (SG) tubes were measured by eddy current test (ECT) signals. Surface analysis and magnitude of defects were performed by using SEM/EDS. Corrosion rate was assessed by weight loss of specimens. The ECT signals (potential and depth %) of defective tubes increased marginally. But the lengths of defects, oxides on the surface and weights of specimens did not change. The average corrosion rate of standard corrosion specimens was negligible. But the surfaces on specimens showed traces of etching. The depth of etching showed a range on the nanometer. After comprehensive evaluation of all the results, it is concluded that 20 % EDTA aqueous solution in high temperature chemical cleaning environments does not have a negative effect on defective tubes.
