This study is aimed to find the scouring mechanism at the toe of rubble mound structures. To investigate the characteristics of scouring in front of the structure, experiments were performed with regular waves in a 2-D flume. The results of this study are as follows. 1) It can be said the characteristics of incident wave causes rolling and sliding of armour block. The difference of wave pressure on the slope, internal flow as well as settlement of armour block due to the weight cause scouring. 2) It is observed that scouring depth at the toe increased when wave height or period increased. The location of ultimate scouring and deposition depth moved seaward when wave period increased. 3) The failure of rubble mound structure was caused by waves or scouring. Failure by erosion increased with high waves and long waves. 4) Using surf-similarity parameter including characteristics of incident waves and structure, scouring and deposition pattern were found and their limit was formulated.
In-stream vegetation is an essential element of a stream channel. Vegetation plays an important role in flood control and the natural environment in stream channels. This research investigates the relationship between in-stream vegetation and stream changes. This study investigates the distribution characteristic of vegetation in some rivers of Korea. Although there are many physical factors that cause changes to streams, this research verified that in-stream vegetation caused sediment deposition. A hydraulic model experiment was conducted. Tests were conducted in a simulated gravel bed stream (bed slope 1/200) with Phragmites japonica. The average diameter of the bed load used was 0.3 mm and 27 kg were uniformly supplied for 1 hour under same hydraulic conditions. The deposition and scouring as well as the change of flow differed according to the density and arrangement of the Phragmites japonica. In-stream vegetation and stream channel change are closely related because deposition and scouring affects the distribution of vegetation.
In this study, the movable bed model testing was carried out so as to analyze bed profile changes including predicting scouring and deposition of bed profile and to solve hydraulic problems affecting with bed and both-bank between upstream and downstream of intake weir in the Nakdong river channel. The movable bed model testing consists of fundamental test, movable model test and numerical analysis method respectively. The fundamental test was enforced to analyze relationship of discharge and sediment load in the tilting flume. When the movable model test was worked, it was shown that sediment budget between input sediment load and output sediment load was balanced exactly. As a result of movable model test, it was presented that scouring and deposition changes in quantities between the upstream and downstream of modification weir were less than those of nature and planning weir. Finally, numerical analysis method was operated by 1-dimensional bed profile changes model ; HEC-6 model so as to complement unsolving hard problems during movable model test. So, modification weir will sustained the stable bed profile changes than any other weirs in the study channel.

The time consuming and expensive nature of experimental research on scouring processes caused by flowing water makes it attractive to develop numerical tools for the predication of the interaction of the fluid flow and the movable bed. In this paper the numerical simulation of scour by a wall jet is presented. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional, and the alluvium is cohesionless. The solution process, repeated at each time step, involves simulation of a turbulent wall jet flow, solution of the convection-diffusion of sand concentration, and prediction of the bed deformation. For simulation of the jet flow, the governing equations for momentum, mass balance and turbulent parameters are solved by the finite volume method. The SIMPLE scheme with momentum interpolation is used for pressure correction. The convection-diffusion equation is solved for sediment concentration. A boundary condition for concentration at the bed, which takes into account the effect of bed-load, is implemented. The time rate of deposition and scour at the bed is obtained by solving the continuity equation for sediment. The shape and position of the scour hole and deposition of the bed material downstream of the hole appear realistic.

In this study, the coupled-numerical model has been newly developed to investigate numerically scouring and deposition around a coastal structure like a submerged breakwater using a numerical wave model and a lagrangian particle model for sand transport. As a numerical wave model, LES-WASS-2D (Hur and Choi, 2008) is adopted. The model is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance term and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model. Distinct element method (Cundall and Strack, 1979), which is able to apply to many dynamical analysis of particulate media, as a lagrangian particle model for sand transport is newly coupled to the numerical wave model. The numerical simulation has been carried out to examine the scour problem in front of an impermeable submerged breakwater using the newly coupled-numerical model. The numerical results has been compared qualitatively with an existing experimental data and then its applicability has been discussed.
Recent development of industry and urbanization in the interior of mountainous area increases the possibility of occurence of natural disaster, such as flood, landslide and deblis-flow. Erosion control facilities, which were the most significant activity to riverbed fixiation, were constructed at the downstream of the experimental basin. In the mountain torrents, the complex bed load transport has occurred by the drift of running water, and resulting in a formation of terrace deposits. Especially, channel migration caused by scouring and deposition frequently occurs at the wide areas of the river bed. Consequently, the unsymmetrical river bed charactristics indicate the degree of the channel migration.
Sediment transport around artificial habitat which is induced by the change ol flow due to installation of the structure plays a role not only as a defect function of subsidence and burial but also bottom-environment control function. This study examined the characteristics of local scouring and deposition with sediment sizes, current velocities and installation direction of artificial habitat in flow field. Resultant subsidence and burial processes are investigated and discussed with Reynolds number. Together with sediment number and dimensionless time elapse, prediction formulas are established by combining these relationships. Bottom control function as cultivating effects is discussed with installation direction, and applicability of countermeasures is compared and stone pavement method is recommended.

The main reason for its instability is sediment scouring downstream of hydraulic structures. Both physical and numerical models have been used to investigate the influence of soil properties on scour hole geometry. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted on resistance parameters that affect sedimentation and erosion. In addition, auxiliary structures like wing walls, which are prevalent in many real-world applications, have rarely been studied for their impact on morphology. The hydraulic characteristics of steady flow through a boxed culvert are calibrated using a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics model compared with experimental data in this study, which shows a good agreement between water depth, velocity, and pressure profiles. Test cases showed that 0.015 m grid cells had the lowest NRMSE and MAE values. It is also possible to quantify sediment scour numerically by testing roughness/d50 ratios (cs) and diversion walls at a meander flume outlet. According to the findings, cs = 2.5 indicates a close agreement between numerical and analytical results of maximum scour depth after the culvert; four types of wing walls influence geometrical deformation of the meander flume outlet, resulting in erosion at the concave bank and deposition at the convex bank; two short headwalls are the most appropriate solution for accounting for small changes in morphology. A numerical model can be used to estimate sediment scour at the meander exit channel of hydraulic structures based on the roughness parameter of soil material and headwall type.
Urban river needs continuous observation for the river conservation because river surrounding environment sensitivly is changed by human activity. In order to grasp the effect of human activity against Taebaek river in Chunchon city, this research analysed the channel shape change, fluctuation volume and bias degree over five times, for June, 1993 to June, 1996. The results were as follows : 1. The change of channel shape on each surveying time mainly occurred in June, 1996 and maximum deposition. $1,247m^3$ occurred on 19~20 section, maximum scouring, $340m^3$ occurred on 6~7 section, 2. When comparing with June, 1993, increased deposition volume of channelbed was about $4,600m^3$ in June, 1996, 3. The bias degree of channel mainly occurred in June, 1996 of surveying times and at 6, 7, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 line of surveying lines.

Seadike is a coastal structure constructed in the rear region of the foreshore to maximize its usability by preventing direct effect of wave. The expected construction field is determined under the design wave and tidal condition where minor wave overtopping is anticipated. Thus, the location of seadike is generally fixed at the highest site of the surrounding area with seadike crest height controlling the permissible range of wave overtopping volume. But a lot of times, frontal sand beach of the seadike continuously deforms due to incident waves, resulting failure in maintaining its initial slope. The erosion and deposition of the seadike front cause changes in the crest height and volume of wave overtopping and decrease in the setting depth of the seadike, which endangers seadike region as a result. In this study, the relation of local scouring and setting depth of the seadike front in the run-up region is examined by using 2D hydraulic model tests and numerical simulations by modified SBEACH model. As a result, the study learned that if appropriate boundary condition is applied to the modified SBEACH model, it is possible to create practical estimations on the local scouring at the seadike foot when erosive waves flow into the region.
