In this paper, a conceptual approach of the stress path method was newly proposed for a rational estimation of settlements of saturated clay deposits. In the proposed approach, settlement-related characteristic deformation behaviors of a specific clay deposit, which can cover all probable stress changes expected in the field, are experimentally evaluated in advance. Then settlements of various structures constructed on the deposit are easily estimated with only the characteristic deformation behaviors and without any additional experimental effort. In Part I of this paper, in order to provide practicality to the new conceptual approach, we developed a detailed procedure which is capable of evaluating characteristic deformation behaviors of a saturated clay deposit with only a limited number of tests and easily predicting deformations under a given stress change using the characteristic deformation behaviors. The applicability of the developed procedure was clearly shown by presenting an actual application example.
Ni-W alloy deposits have lately attracted the interest as an alternative surface treatment method for hard chromium electrodeposits because of higher wear resistance, hardness at high temperature, and corrosion resistance. This study deals with influences of process variables, such as electodeposition current density, plating temperature and pH, on the internal stress of Ni-W nanocrystalline deposits. The internal stress was increased with increasing the applied current density. With increasing applied current density, the grain size of the deposit decreases and concentration of hydrogen in the deposit increases. The subsequent release of the hydrogen results in shrinkage of the deposit and the introduction of tensile stress in the deposit. Consequently, for layers deposited at high current density, cracking occurs readily owing to high tensile stress value. By increasing the temperature of the electrodeposition from $60^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$, the internal stress was decreased. It seems that an increase in the number of active ions overcoming the activation energy at elevated temperature caused a decline in the concentration polarization and surface diffusion. It decreased the level of hydrogen absorption due to the lessened hydrogen evolution reaction. Therefore, the lower level of hydrogen absorption degenerated the hydride on the surface of the electrode, resulting in the reduction of the internal stress of the deposits. By increasing the pH of the electrodeposition from 5.6 to 6.8, the internal stress in the deposits were slightly decreased. It is considered that the decrease in internal stess of deposits was due to supply of W complex compound in cathode surface, and hydrogen ion resulted from decrease of activity.

The efficiencies of thermal power system using fossil fuel depend on heat exchangers which extract energy from the exhaust gas before it is expelled to the atmosphere. To increase heat transfer efficiency it is very important to maintain the surface of heat exchanger as clean condition. The accepted skill of cleaning of fouled surface of heat exchanger is soot blowing. A high pressure jet of air is forced through the flat surface of plate to remove the deposit of fouling. There is, however, little knowledge of the fundamental principles of how the jet behave on the surface and how the jet actually removes the deposit. Therefore, the study focuses on the measuring of cleaning area and cleaning dwell time after accumulating the simulated deposit on the flat surface. The deposit test rig was built for the study and simulated deposit material is used after measuring the physical property of the each material by shearing stress test. Much data was obtained for the analysis by the parameters change such as the different jet speed, different inner pressure and variable distance of the jet from the test rig surface. The experimental data was compared with the theoretical equation and most of the data matches well except some extreme cases.

The effects of additive(grain refiner, GR) on process efficiency of the Ni-Fe-P alloy electrodeposition and the material properties of the deposit were investigated. Electrochemical properties of the deposits were investigated using polarization and electrochemical impedance techniques, and the material properties of the deposits were characterized through inductively coupled plasma(ICP), spiral contractometer, XRD, SEM and TEM. When the additive was added into the electrodeposition bath, current efficiency, Ni content and corrosion resistance of the deposit increased, whereas residual stress, surface roughness and grain size of the deposit decreased.

Palladium is widely used for several applications and recovery of palladium from secondary sources becomes increasingly important since palladium is one of maldistributed platinum group metals. Electrochemical recovery of dense palladium metal sheet from Pd leaching solution is a simple and easily controlled method. The surface morphology of the recovered Pd metal was significantly affected by current density and temperature. Dense deposit morphology was in higher stress state regardless of preparation condition under $55^{\circ}C$. Rising temperature up to $70^{\circ}C$ had a stress releasing effect besides densification of Pd deposit.
This study investigated the electrochemical recovery of palladium in a HCl solution that is used for palladium leaching. The high acidity of HCl solution and the low concentration of Pd ions increased the cathodic overpotential and reduced the limiting current density. Lowering the current density produced dense deposits; however, they were under high tensile stress. Raising the temperature affected both the densification and the stress, which enabled the attainment of dense Pd deposits under low stress. Lowering the current density and raising the temperature up to 70$^{\circ}C$ was recommended for the recovery of palladium as sound bulk Pd deposits. Current efficiency was over 85% at the initial stage of recovery may decrease the current efficiency, since a low Pd ion concentration results in a low limiting current density.

Overconsolidated clays have a different stress history according to the deposit environment. The stress history is classified into (i) rotation angle of stress path, (ii) overconsolidation ratio, and (iii) magnitude of length of recent stress path. Stress-strain behaviour of overconsolidated clays strongly depends on these stress history. In this study a series of drained stress path tests were carried out. Test results indicated that stress-strain behaviour of overconsolidated clay(focused on strain rate) depends on OCR and length of recent stress path, especially rotation angle.
Model pile teats, using large calibration chamber in which the stress state and the relative density can be controlled, were performed in order to study on the effect of soil condition on the behavior of open-ended steel pipe pile. The model pipe pile was made up of two pipes to separately measure each component of bearing capacity of open -ended steel pipe pile. According to the tests results, pile plugging and driving resistance of the pile installed in sand were primarily dependent on the horizontal stress and the relative density. Plug bearing capacity, outside skin fricition and total bearing capacity were also mainly dependent on the horizontal stress and relative density. Moreover, the ratio of the horizontal stress acting on the outside wall of open -ended pipe pile after installation to the original horizontal stress was not nearly affected by original value of horizontal stress. It is bigger than one in the case of dense deposit, equal to one for medium deposit, and smaller than one for very loose deposit. It seems to be mainly dependent on the relative density for a given soil.
Stellite 12 alloy-powders were overlaid on 410 stainless steel valve seat using plasma transferred arc(PTA) process. Variation of the microstructure, hardness, wear and corrosion of overlaid deposit with current change was investigated. The deposit showed hypoeutectic microstructure, which was consisted of primary cobalt dendrite and networked $M_7C_3$ type eutectic carbides. As current increased, the amount of eutectic carbide decreased and its dendritic secondary arm spacing increased. Hardness of the deposit was decreased with increase of current. Stress relief heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ for two hours resulted in slight increase of hardness in the deposit and showed uniform hardness distribution in base metal without any hardened layer in HAZ. Specific wear decreased with increase of sliding distance. The deposit of high hardness with a lot of eutectic carbide showed relatively low specific wear. Initial corrosion current density of the deposit in 0.1N sulfuric acid was lower than those of 410 stainless steel, and showed a little variation with PTA current.

To study the effect of welding methods on the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) behavior of welded AISI type 316L and 304 austenitic stainless steel, the Slow Strain Rate Technique(SSRT) has been adopted in the boiling 45 wt% $MgCl_2$ solution. The results are as follows. 1) Welded sections are more susceptible than base metal in SCC, and the rank of SCC, and the rasistance in welding method is TIG, MIG, $CO_2$ and ARC. 2) The Ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and the strain of both base metal and welded joint are reduced as decreasing extension rate. 3) The SCC resistance of 316L base metal and welded sections are superior than that of 304. 4) The tendency of pitting and the SCC suseptibility are agreed well, and the SCC site is welded deposit section in 316L whereas HAZ in 304.
