  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the needlestick injuries in the dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 253 dental hygienists by convenience sampling from December 1, 2014 to March 20, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of 11 questions of sociodemographic characteristics, 5 questions of needlestick injuries experience, 3 questions of needlestick injuries during treatment and 2 questions of needlestick handling method. Data were analyzed by chi-square test, t-test and one way ANOVA analysis using SPSS 18.0 statistical program. Results: Those who had needlestick injuries within a year were 150 persons (59.3%) and the mean was 1.28 times per year. The needlestick injuries were frequent in the local anesthetic injection to gum. The completion and removal of the needle injection by hand accidently stung the digits and hand (p<0.01). Conclusions: Needlestick injuries can happen at any time to the dental hygienists in the dental clinics, so it is necessary to handle the needlestick carefully in case of anesthetic injection.

  • Backgrounds: In order to prevent dental injuries that often occur in child and adolescent, it is intended to investigate and assess actual state of the injury development, present epidemiological background, and consider and discuss for preparing preventive means against the injury development. Purpose: It was attempted to understand major features of dental injuries developing in child and adolescent and indentify high risk factors of dental injuries in child and adolescent. Methods: In this study, 523 cases of computerized data collected as disease entities of dental injuries among 1-18 years old patient visiting S university hospital located in Seoul in 2009 were analyzed and following results were obtained. Results: It was found that the ratio of dental injuries by genders in child and adolescent was 66.14% of male and 33.86% of female. It was shown also that causes of dental injuries by ages were more in order of falling, bumping, chewing, traffic accident, sports, violence, and crash. In addition places where dental injuries occur by ages were home in less than 5 year old group, park, playground, and play yard in 6-11 year old group, park, playground, and play yard also in 12-14 year old group, and stairs, road, and outdoor places such as mountain climbing, beach, and camping in 15-18 year old group. It was found that time rages when dental injuries in child and adolescent often develop were 15-19 o'clock for falling, 15-19 o'clock for crash, 15-19 o'clock for bumping, 19-03 o'clock for violence, 15-19 o'clock for traffic accident, 15-19 o'clock for sports activity, and 15-19 o'clock for chewing. Conclusion: Background of dental injury inducing factors are very complicated and diversified, so deep study and analysis are required for its prediction. Therefore, it seems necessary to identify risk factors by phases such as before, at, and after accident, establish strategies to reduce injury development, and develop and utilize necessary programs.

Materials and Methods: Data for pediatric maxillofacial trauma patients aged 12 years and younger who were registered at the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital, Kolkata, India, were reviewed and examined. Patients who were treated between October 2016 and September 2018 were analyzed according to age, sex, cause of injury, frequency and site of facial fractures, and soft tissue injuries. The chi-square tests were carried out for statistical analyses with a significance level of 5%. Results: Of 232 patients with a mean age of 6.77±3.25 years, there were 134 males (57.8%) and 98 females (42.2%). The overall male to female ratio was 1.39:1. The most common causes of injuries were falls (56.5%) and motor vehicle accidents (16.8%). Incidence of falls decreased significantly with age (P<0.001). Dentoalveolar injuries (61.6%) and soft tissue injuries (57.3%) were more common than facial fractures (42.7%). Mandibular fractures (82.8%) were the most common facial fractures, and perioral or lip injuries were the most prevalent injuries in our patient population. There was a positive association between facial fractures and soft tissue injury (P<0.01) (odds ratio 0.26; confidence interval 0.15-0.46). Conclusion: Falls were the leading cause of maxillofacial trauma in our sample of children, and the most common site of fractures was the mandible.

  • It is well known that the majority of dental injuries occur in children and adolescent. An injury to the teeth can have serious and long-term consequences, leading to their discoloration, malformation, or possible loss. The emotional impact of such an injury can be far reaching. The majority of dental injuries in the primary and permanent dentitions involve the anterior teeth, especially the maxillary central incisors. Concussion, subluxation, and luxation are the commonest injuries in the primary dentition, while uncomplicated crown fractures are commonest in the permanent dentition. If it is decided to preserve a traumatized primary tooth, it should be carefully observed for clinical and radiographic signs of pulpal or periodontal complications. Radiographs are also examined closely to disclose any damage to the permanent successor. The intervals between reexaminations should be individualized depending on the severity of trauma, the expected type of complications and the age of the patient. Most complications are observed within the first year of the trauma. However, the follow-up evaluation of permanent teeth should continue until treatment of all complications is completed, or until a lost or extracted permanent tooth has been adequately replaced. It is important that the dentist and the other members of the dental team are well prepared to meet the many complex and challenging problems in the care of dental emergencies.
