Methods : Subjects were the students of J and M elementary schools in Seoul from October 28 to November 16, 2011. Oral health education was provided by a dental hygienist, and then they took the PHP test again to verify the effect of the oral health education. Results : Concerning changes in PHP scores after the oral health education, the scores of the students dropped from 2.34 in the pretest to 1.85 in the posttest(p<.001). As to changes in PHP scores by grade after the oral health education, the third graders and sixth graders got 2.40 and 1.36, respectively. Regarding satisfaction level with the oral health education, they got 4.07 out of five points. Among the items of satisfaction with the oral health education by grade, there were significant gaps in a change of toothbrushing method(p<.001) and a change of dietary control(p<.001) by grade. Conclusions : The finding of the study showed that both the third and sixth graders had less score in the PHP test and credibility to the effectiveness of the oral health education by the dental hygienist.

When surveyed by workplace, personal protection was high in general hospitals (3.75) while hand-washing frequency was high in dental clinics (3.74). 3. Among those who received infection control education more than three times, personal protection (4.07) and hand-washing frequency (3.80) were high (p<0.05). 4. Personal protection-related factors were general hospital workers, necessity of infection control education and awareness on infectious disease (p<0.05), while factors associated with hand-washing frequency were number of patients per day, whether or not infection control-related class is given at school, necessity of infection control education and awareness on infectious disease (p<0.05). • Objective: The purpose of the study is to investigate the curriculum development and operation based on national competency standard (NCS). Methods: The duty of the dental hygienist was analyzed based on DACUM by ten experts in January, 2011. The duty model of the dental hygienist was inspected after duty analysis. The subjects of choice were preventive dentistry and practice. The satisfaction with the subjects were carried out from March to June, 2015. Results: The duty analysis of dental hygienist by DACUM produced preventive dental treatment(11 tasks), oral health education(3 tasks), comprehensive dental hygiene treatment(6 tasks) and 12 categories(156 tasks). Preventive dental treatment was divided into preventive dentistry and practice, oral health education was changed into oral health education and practice, and comprehensive dental hygiene treatment was replace by comprehensive dental hygiene and practice. The contents of preventive dentistry and practice included outline, learning objective, related knowledge and self evaluation. Professional evaluation required mutual experience and evaluation of the students. The mutual evaluation of the students was $4.61{\pm}0.506$(dental plaque control) and $1.80{\pm}0.316$(tooth brushing). The professional evaluation was $1.73{\pm}0.274$(dental plaque control) and $1.60{\pm}0.322$(tooth brushing)(p<0.01). The satisfaction with preventive dentistry and practice was $4.61{\pm}0.506$(improvement in practical work ability), $4.58{\pm}0.511$(knowledge improvement) and $4.55{\pm}0.572$(NCS educational environment) in order. Conclusions: The operation of NCS curriculum is considered to improve practical work ability and to solve skill mismatch between dental industries and educational training institutions.

  • In the treatment of temporomandibular disorders, patient education and self-management method are necessary in addition to other specialized treatments to prevent recurrence of symptoms or development of chronic pain. The causes of temporomandibular disorders are very diverse, but in many cases the patients continue to suffer or experience recurrence because of the repeated exposure to micro traumas such as oral parafunctions, bad habits, and harmful eating habits. Much better prognosis is expected if a dental hygienist who is teamed up with a specialist in the dental clinic can perform patient education and management based on the understanding of temporomandibular disorder.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness-perception factors and oral health promotion behavior of dental hygiene and nonhealth-related students in an effort to find out factors affecting their oral health promotion behavior. Methods : The subjects in this study were students in the three-year-course dental hygiene and students in the two-year-course nonhealth-related department in G college located in the city of Gwangju. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed and compared. Results : 1. The dental hygiene students were statistically significantly ahead of the nonhealth-related students in perceived oral health knowledge(p<0.001), awareness of the importance of oral health(p<0.001), perceived oral health status(p<0.001) and oral health interest(p<0.001). 2. Concerning the characteristics of oral health promotion behavior, the dental hygiene students were statistically significantly better at toothbrushing(p<0.001) and the use of dental floss(p<0.001) than the nonhealth-related students. 3. Regarding factors affecting oral health promotion behavior, oral health knowledge and oral health interest were identified as the factors that impacted on oral health promotion behavior. Out of the two, oral health interest exercised a greater influence on that. Conclusions : It seems that oral health education could motivate students to be concerned about their oral health, to acquire knowledge on that and eventually to change their oral health behavior and attitude. As for college students, oral health education provides a final chance for them to check their oral health knowledge, attitude and oral health promotion behavior before they start to work as full-fledged adults, and institutional measures should be taken to offer more intensive official oral health education.

  • A total of nine oral health educators for 17 persons with developmental disabilities conducted oral health education once a week for four weeks. The oral health educators provided oral health knowledge education and individual toothbrushing teachings. The developmentally disabled people in their 20s and 30s conducted oral health education without a guardian. Ten people who completed all the four pieces of training had no significant improvement in the toothbrushing method and the recommended number of toothbrushing sessions a day, as well as a lack of growth in oral health knowledge. However, 58.8% of the individuals expressed satisfaction with the oral health education program, whereas, 52.9% expressed the desire for a re-education. Although the ratio of teachers to students was 1:2, and the oral health education conducted four times, it was insufficient to promote a successful oral health behavior or knowledge for people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, as a suggestion, oral health education for people with developmental disabilities ought to proceed with their guardians to promote the success of the training.
